Angus (Forfarshire) / COMPLETED - Help finding Dundee Street name Census 1911
« on: Sunday 28 March 21 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Ive been looking at the 1911 census for my 2 x Grand Father George Taylor and his wife Margaret. The record shows that the family in what appears to be 10 Combination Street, Dundee in the parish of St Davids. The census notes that George and Margaret had been married 6 years had 3 children of whom only two survived, my Grand Father George aged three and a brother Robert aged six.

Ive heard of Constitution street in Dundee which is in St Davids parish but never combination street. Can someone check the writing and see whether the agree it looks like combination street?

Thanks

Renfrewshire / Margaret QUEEN 1841 census
« on: Saturday 06 March 21 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
Im looking for some help deciphering the Census from 1841 for my 2 x Great Grandmother Margaret Queen who was aged 11 at the time. Margaret QUEEN was born in 1829 in Renfrewshire to Catherine HEENEN, age 28, and Martin QUEEN, age 29. In 1841 I believe that the family were living at South Croft Street in Paisley. The record shows:

Name Wedow Queen Age 40
         Mary Queen    Age20
         Francis Milpatrick Age15
         Margaret Nealey  Age15
         Bridget Queen.    Age15
         Catherin Queen.  Age13
         Margaret Queen. Age11

I take it that wedow is short for widow?? Was that common practice then? Theres no mention of Martin Queen who presumably was deceased. Also does anyone know what sort of accommodation it was back then, presumably multi occupancy dwellings. I also see that it appears that a number of the household may have been born in Ireland. I was aware that her mother Catherine HEENEN (Wedow Queen) was from Ireland although I don't know where or when. Whats a good source to trace Irish family ancestry

Aberdeenshire / Charles Gordon and Elizabeth STEPHEN
« on: Sunday 28 February 21 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
My 3 x Great Grand father Charles GORDON was born on 9 July 1795 in Aberdeenshire, the son of Elizabeth STEPHEN and Charles GORDON.

I cannot find any record of the marriage between Elizabeth and Charles.

From ancestry I can see that Elizabeth Stephen was born on 17 December 1777 in Tyrie, Aberdeenshire, to Barbara Mitchell and William Stephen.

Elizabeth Stephen married Alexander Ogston in Tyrie, Aberdeenshire, on 2 April 1797 when she was 19 years old.

My 3 x Great Grand father Charles GORDON would have been 2 years old at the time. He later married Isabella CADGER on 28 May 1829 in Strichen, Aberdeenshire.

I cannot find any trace of my 4 x Great Grand father Charles GORDON other than the baptism record for his son that he had with Elizabeth STEPHEN. Any assistance with tracing either his birth or death would be appreciated. When driving around known family areas such as Tyrie and Strichen a few years ago I discovered that some church records were destroyed in a fire and so it may be that any trace of him has gone.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Hedley Ratcliffe and Blanche Amelia Griffin
« on: Friday 26 February 21 08:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I'm trying to trace details on the family of Hedley Ratcliffe who was born on Jul 1904 in Atcham, Shropshire, and Blanche Amelia Griffin whom he married during July 1932 in Atcham. I believe that Hedley may have worked as a nurse in the mental hospital. At some point the family moved to Hereford. Their son Gordon Ratcliffe who was born in 1934 is my father in law.

Ross & Cromarty / McCulloch Family From Dingwall
« on: Monday 07 January 13 19:43 GMT (UK)  »
William McCulloch and Rachel Dunn married in Dunblane on 4th Oct 1829 before moving to Dingwall sometime before the 1841 Census.

I have checked trough SP and downloaded the entry in the 1841 census, unfortunately the address isn't viewable only the house number.

At the time they have 4 children: Margaret aged 11, Elsie aged 9, John aged 7 and finally Edward from whom I am descended.who was 3 at the time.  Williams occupation is a saddler.

I know that Edward married Margaret McBeath in Bridge of Allan in on 7th February 1862 before moving to Dundee.

I have heard second hand that the 1851 Census had the family living at 13 High Street which was in fact a Saddler’s shop.  At the time there were: John (17), Edward (12), listed as a Scholar and born in Dingwall,  27th March 1838 and Christened on 22nd June 1838 – Dingwall, Ross and Cromerty, Scotland William (8), Joseph (6), Jeanette (2).

I understand that the 1851 census has William McCulloch (47), a Saddler, who was born in Dingwall, Ross & Cromerty and that his wife Rachel was born in Dunblane.  This may explain why they moved to Dingwall, but I have accessed the 1851 census myself can someone please confirm this.

In 1871 Edward and his wife Margaret McBeath were living at 15 Hunter Street, Dundee.

Again if anyone could look up the census for 1861 and 1871 for Dingwall to see whether any of the McCullochs were still there I'd be grateful.

I have no idea at the moment what happened to the remainder of the McCulloch's but if anyone has them in their family tree I'd naturally be very interested to hear.

Some of the McCulloch's went on to serve in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in both South Africa and India.  Some of the McCulloch's settled in South Africa and whom I'm trying to trace.

Regards

Jim

Can someone help me decipher the following record which I believe to be the birth record of my ancestor Charles Gordon who was baptised in Tyrie on 9th July 1795.  His father was also called Charles and his Mother Elizabeth Stephen.  It seems to read that "Charles Gordon Upper Boyslag ??of Elizabeth Stephen had a son baptised named Charles; James <can't really make out anything after that.

Any help with the place that Charles Gordon is from and what is after the mention of Charles would be gratefully received as always.  Charles is the oldest ancestor that I've been able to trace so far.

World War One / Is there a way
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 20:19 BST (UK)  »
I was attempting to trace a number of family members who would have been over 18 when the war broke out.  I cannot find any subsequent record of them and was wondering whether if you have a name and DOB you can discover whether they enlisted during WWI?

Thanks

Angus (Forfarshire) / Isabella McDonald Gordon
« on: Wednesday 11 April 12 15:04 BST (UK)  »
I am attempting to trace descendents of John Gordon (28/12/1861) and his wife Mary Murphy (01/12/1865).  The 1911 census shows the family living at Ann Street Dundee and consisting of John, his wife Mary and their children: Aggie (18), Bella (11), Alice (9), Sarah (9), Daniel (16), David (13), Alfred (5) and James (3).

I searched on SP for the marriage of Isabella McDonald Gordon who was born in 1900 in Dundee.  SP seemed to throw up a record part of which I've produced below.  The record is for the marriage of William Brown and Isabella McDonald Gordon on 22nd July 1921.  I discovered that the female name is signed B Gordon.  I take it that this is short for Isabella as per the census record.  Isabella's record shows that she was 20 years old which seems about right, Father John Gordon, which was correct.  Her witness is Alice Gordon who was one of Isabella's sister's.

I then note the mothers name as Mary Mackie whereas I would have expected Murphy which was her mother's maiden name. Mackie doesn't appear in the family at all.  Could this just be an error on the Mother's surname as it would appear fairly far fetched to think that all of the other names would be sheer coincidence and that there were two Isabella McDonald Gordon's of the same age with the same sister's, father's and Mother's forenames.  I thought that if William Brown or one of his family registered the marriage then they may have got Mary's maiden name wrong.  ???

Thoughts on this would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Jim
