My Grandmother left this photo stating it was of her Grandfather - John Cross (1844 - 1911) from Dursley Gloucestershire. No idea whether the uniform is military!

Wexford / Furlongs from Wexford Town

Hi Gearoid

I refer to your postings re Charles & Johanna Furlong in the ‘Castle Hill St’ thread and the PM you sent me.

Below is the marriage entry for your Gt grandparents (17 May 1884). Unfortunately no address is stated but it’s in the Bride St church register so they must have resided within the church vicinity at that time.

The 1911 census states they had 8 children, 3 still living (there were also only 3 children residing at the family home in Talbot St at the time of the 1901 census as well). I’ll see if I can find any bapt records that would provide details re their 1880’s address.

Hi

My first request for a photo repair. It was taken in the early 1950's in Ireland and my Mother aged about 12 is 2nd from the left in the back row along with her childhood friends.

Any improvement would be very much appreciated and will be returned to Mum as a surprise.

Thanks

Steve

Wexford / Wexford Town - 1901/11 Census query
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 10:25 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone identify on the old 1900’s OSI map where exactly in Wexford Town the 13 dwellings noted in this 1901 census return are located:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wexford/Wexford_Urban_No__2/Whiterock_South/1805404/

The census forms states:
DED: Wexford No: 2 Urban
Townland: Whiterock South
Ward: St Mary’s
Parish: Maudlintown
Sub District: Main St South

Most of the above information implies the homes were within Wexford Town (as at 1901) but the Townland of  ‘Whiterock South’ tends to be more rural.

My guess is that they were a group of old cottages gradually being demolished as by 1911 the number of dwellings had reduced from 13 to 9.

There is a similar census return for ‘Whiterock South’ under the DED of Wexford Rural:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wexford/Wexford_Rural/Whiterock_South/1804588/

I know this is the rank of 20 odd dwellings opposite the Bishop Water Distillery in Distillery Road as my G.GF John Dalton b1860 and family lived here (All the children’s bapt records from 1888 – 1902 state ‘Distillery Road’.)

Wexford / Pitham's of Wexford Town
« on: Saturday 11 December 10 16:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there! Looking for Walsh and Pithman.

My Great Grandparents Bridget Walsh 1901-1958 and Paul Pithman 1901-1983.

They had several children, some stayed in Wexford, and some moved to England, My grandmother  settled in and around London. I met family in Wexford in the mid 90s when I visited with my grandmother( daughter of Bridget and Paul -- also named Bridget, -- known as Brenda Pithman, born 1937, the youngest child who left Ireland at the age of 14. -- married Name Cox. We stayed with my nan's sister in Wolfe Tone villas, a few doors away, in the same street my nan Brenda grew up in. We spent most of our time with my nan's other sister -- Nan,( her name is Nan! ) who lived just around the corner, near the pub (can't remember what the pub was called ) We went there a couple of times. Most of aunt Nan's children live in Ireland! I managed to Trace Paul Pithman, his parents and siblings on the 1901 and 1911 irish census. The problem I have is tracing back further, and tracing Bridget's side of the family -- the Walsh's! I'm unable to get information on Bridget's Walsh's parent's and siblings, as my mother doesn't know. I just want to trace my ancestors as far back as I can go, and to learn more about my great grandmother Bridget Walsh, who was much loved by my grandmother Brenda.

Paul Pithman's parents were Paul and Annie. It has been known for their name to be spelt Pitman. Also Paul Pitman Jnr had another child out of wedlock!

My great grandfather Paul Pithman's Siblings: Joseph, William, James, Thomas, Mary and Anastasia --Their parents: Paul and Annie. ( Don't know Annie's Maiden name)

Hi Carrieanne 1

I can't help you on the Walsh's but I do have some info re the Pitham's. In the 1911 census Paul & Annie & family are living next door to my Grandfather's family, the Dalton's. As my GF (Thomas) was born in Sept 1900 and your G.GF Paul Junior was born in Feb 1901 it's highly likely they would have been school pals!!  By 1915 the Dalton family had moved to Barrack St which by co-incidence is the street where the Pithams lived in 1901!

I assume Paul's younger brother Thomas is the same Thomas Pitham who later lived in Saltee Avenue which is also where my GF moved to in 1948 until he died in 1976. Thomas Pitham was married to a 'Lizzie Walsh' - both are buried in Crosstown Cemetery. Maybe Lizzie and Bridget Walsh were sisters!

My Mother was best friends with 3 of their daughters: Nancy, Rose & Betty Pitham. I understand that Nancy's 'Grannie Walsh' lived at the top end of Bride Street.

Below I have attached a part copy of James Pittam's 1904 Bapt entry in the Bride St Church parish register. (Birth 3rd Oct, Bapt 4th Oct) This seems to confirm Annie's maiden name of 'Duggan' for you. The sponsors are Thomas Pender & Annie White.

Wexford / Help to identify place name?
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help identify where exactly 'Rainsgrange' is as stated in a late 19th century Wexford Town baptism parish register? - see below.

It is a note that was added to my Great Uncle's 1897 baptism entry. I did search the name on the internet & only one reference came up - a place in Co Waterford.

However the Civil Registration index has Patrick Dalton marrying Elizabeth Hurley in 1938 in the district of New Ross.  I guess they married here as that's possibly where the bride came from. (They moved to England shortly after and had 3 children born in the Bristol District  between 1939 - 1943)

US Lookup Requests / John Dalton b1894 - NY look up help
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 18:08 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Uncle John 'Jack' Dalton is the only relative I'm aware of that has a USA connection hence I'm unfamiliar with the various websites/sources for looking up information - hence my request for some help in this area.

Below is a summary of the information I have on John to date:

1894 - Birth on 5th Dec, Distillery Rd, Wexford Town. Co Wexford, Ireland.

1901 - Irish Census: aged 6. Resident in Maudlintown Whiterock South (Distillery Rd) Wexford Town

1911 - Irish Census: aged 16. Resident in Bride Street, Wexford Town. Occpn - shop porter.

1914 - 1918. Fought in the 1st WW. Named on p32 of 'The Wexford War Dead' by Tom Burnell & Margaret Gilbert as being in the vicinity of a fatally wounded soldier. (Stated as living in Barrack St which was the family's address at that time)  My Mother has a picture of John in his military uniform.

1926 - John's Mother's Burial register names 'John Dalton' (he was at this time the eldest son still at home) as managing the internment.

1926 - 1948 Between these two dates John emigrated to the USA with his wife/partner (Elizabeth from Barntown). I'm not sure at this point whether they married in Ireland or the States and unfortunately I do not know her maiden name.

1968 - March 9th. Died in Brooklyn, N.Y. Interred in Brooklyn after mass in St. Ignatius R.C Church on Wed March 13th. Rootsweb Website gives last address as 11225 (Brooklyn, Kings, NY. SSN: 050-01-5233 ). Buried in St. Patricks cemetery. (My Mother has a memory card for him).

No Children.

What my Mother does not know is when her Uncle John emigrated to the states? It would be helpful to know whether he is on the 1930 USA Census? If so then he most likely emigrated between 1926 - 1930 and should be on a passenger list between those two years.

If he's not on the 1930 census then I guess he'll be on a passenger list post that year.

Any help/leads would be much appreciated

Steve

Wexford / The old Wexford Town Graveyards
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 09:14 BST (UK)  »
I recall reading a couple of years ago that the Wexford Town Council were holding some sort of open day to allow people to wander around the old locked up graveyards in the Town. I think it was around July time. Is this an annual event in the town or was it a one off?

The only old graveyard I have managed to gain access to on my last couple of visits was  St Mary's Magdelan's in Maudlintown, south of the town and that was only because there was no lock on the gate. Luckily the vegetation had just been cut back on my last visit and I was able to gain access to some stones I hadn't seen before some of which go back to the late 18th century.
