The Common Room / Between the Censuses
« on: Wednesday 11 March 09 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
Just a quick question  ;D

I am trying to trace an ancestor's movements between the 1881 and 1891 censuses. I have looked at Electoral Registers, Rating Valuation Books and School Admission Books at the local Record Office, without much success.  ???

Can anyone suggest any other sources of information, which may be of use to me.

Many thanks

Oxfordshire / Thame Registration District

Hello

I am trying to trace a birth record from 1887. Although it doesn't exist on the GRO Index, I would like to try and see if it appears on the original birth registrations. I am hopeful that the record exists and that it never found it's way onto the index.

Does anyone know if it is possible to access the original entries? I appreciate Thame RD no longer exists, but the records must be somewhere.

The Common Room / Unregistered Birth or GRO Index Error
« on: Tuesday 03 March 09 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
Rootschatters  :)

I have posted messages on other boards regarding my Grandfather, but I have a specific question. William James Selwood was born, according to his pension records, on 29 April 1887. On the 1891 & 1901 census he is shown as James Selwood having been born in Thame, Oxon.

I have tried many, many routes to try and find his birth certificate without success. It may well be that his birth was never registered, but he would have had to prove his age when he claimed his pension in 1952.

I have read that sometimes births were registered many years later and that in some cases the GRO indexes are incorrect. Is there any way of tracing late registrations or trying to obtain the original details from the Registrar at Thame (which no longer exists) rather than relying on the GRO index.

I'm really struggling with this one I'm afraid.

Henry Hooper Peisley
Edward Gordon Sear

Unfortunately, I do not have any futher details but any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Suffolk / Agricultural Labourer - Suffolk
« on: Thursday 12 February 09 21:26 GMT (UK)  »
I apologise in advance if this is not the correct way of doing things but as his question spans two boards I am posting this on both the Suffolk and Occupation Interest boards.

My GG Grandfather, David Sharpe was born in Wickhambrook Suffolk in 1822. His parents were John and Elizabeth Sharpe. AS far as I am aware David had 3 siblings, all born in Wickhambrook, George (1824), Eliza (1827) and Ann (1830).

The only marriage for David's parents, which seems to fit is John Sharpe and Elizabeth Parish in Thorpe Morieux in 1813. This couple also had 3 children in Thorpe Morieux; John (1814), Robert (1816) and Edward (1818).

John Sharpe (snr) was an Agricultural Labourer. My question is did Ag Labs move out of their known districts in search of work, i.e. could John have moved his family from Thorpe Morieux to Wickhambrook in search of work? The two places are not next to each other and there is no direct route between the two. If it was commonplace for Ag Labs to move in search of work then I can be fairly confident the two sets of children are from the same marriage.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

The Common Room / Two "Parker" Mysteries
« on: Saturday 07 February 09 20:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters, I hope you can help me locate two Parkers:

1) Richard James Parker was born in Brill, Buckinghamshire in the 2nd Qtr of 1887. The birth was registered in the Thame registration district. His mother is shown as Mary Ann Parker. No father is shown. I have been unable to find Richard on any census or any record of his death, assuming he died before the 1891 census.

2) Harriet Orloff Parker is living with her parents, George and Harriet, together with her siblings in Upton Cum Chalvey, Slough in 1871 where she is 1 year old. She is also on the 1881 census, again living in Upton Cum Chalvey, where she is 12 years old. I am unable to find her on any the 1891 census. I have tried checking for possible details for both marriages and deaths.
(edit: On the 1881 census, Harriet is shown as "Harriet Packer".)

Any help with these two would be greatly appreciated.

« on: Thursday 29 January 09 14:08 GMT (UK)  »
... or at least have access themselves?   ;D

I'm trying to find details of a fatal accident which occurred in early November 1903 in Bristol. The victim was William Sharp(e), my grandmother's brother.

Any help would be very appreciated.
