Scotland / Where is this castle?
« on: Wednesday 11 May 16 12:30 BST (UK)  »
A cousin showed me this old photo.  He said he had been told that some of our Cameron ancestors lived here before they left to come to Australia.  We live in Australia and have not a clue where exactly it might be.  Just on the off chance that somebody might know, I am posting it here!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can anyone date this young man?

This is a photo of a charming miniature that a cousin has.  We don't know who he is, although we can make guesses.  Any thoughts on date/country?

Other Countries / Bermuda baptisms? Please help
« on: Saturday 23 October 10 11:49 BST (UK)  »
I've just learned that my ggggrandfather, Lieut. John Cameron, was serving with his battalion in Bermuda at the time my gggrandfather Donald Charles Cameron was born, around 1813-1814.  (This may explain why I haven't been able to find a birth/baptism in Britain!)

This was before civil registration, and I'd welcome any advice about how I could search for a record of the baptism.  Even advice about churches on Bermuda would be helpful.  I believe the family was C of E/Episcopalian.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Armed Forces / Lt. John Cameron, 79th reg/4th garrison battalion - help!
« on: Saturday 04 September 10 12:14 BST (UK)  »
I know very little about military matters, consequently am having great trouble understanding this man's career - help!

My information says that in 1806, John Cameron enrolled in Erracht's 79th regiment with the rank of Ensign.  In 1807 he was promoted Lieutenant.  From there, somehow he appeared in the 4th Garrison Battalion which went to Jersey in 1810.  A son, Ewen, was born there; our family records show that another son, Donald Charles, was born there in 1813, but I've been told that the battalion left Jersey in 1812 and we cannot find a baptism for Donald there.

He seems to have returned to Lochaber after the Battle of Waterloo, but I have no idea where he was in the meantime.

If anyone can give me any information, or tell me where to look, I'd be most grateful.  I live in Australia, so cannot just pop along to the National Archives, sadly!!

Thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / Looking for mystery man AK Cameron *COMPLETED*
« on: Friday 03 September 10 11:32 BST (UK)  »
I have a forebear who lived in Melbourne, Victoria, until at least 1870 - then he disappears.  Can't find him anywhere in Australia, and am wondering if he might have gone to New Zealand?

Angus Kennedy Cameron, pastoral overseer, wife Annie Quilter Cameron nee Nice.  He was born 1821 in Scotland.  On the NZ online indexes there is a death in 1876 which just could be him, but since I don't know that he went there, am a bit unwilling to order the certificate.

If anyone is able to check incoming passenger lists for Angus and Annie, I'd be most grateful.  If they are found, then I would order that certificate!  I suspect that if they did go to NZ, it would have been in the 1870s or at the latest the 1880s.

Thanks!

Australia / Angus Kennedy CAMERON - beamed up?
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 11:12 BST (UK)  »
Angus Kennedy Cameron was born in 1821 and came to Australia on the "Great Britain" in 1853.  He seems to have settled in Melbourne - married Annie Quilter Nice and a son was born and died there in 1870.  After that - nothing!  (There is a family belief that he was "married with children in Melbourne".

I've searched the online indexes for a death, the Prov index to see if he left on a ship for elsewhere, the Australian newspapers site for a death.  Nothing.

The compiler of the excellent Australian Camerons online genealogy does not know what happened to him, either.

Does anyone here have a flash of inspiration about what may have happened to him?  Otherwise, it seems that he was beamed up!  8) ::)

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Donald Charles Cameron - birth/baptism 1813-15?
« on: Friday 27 August 10 11:58 BST (UK)  »
My 3xggrandfather Lieut John Cameron was stationed in Jersey from about 1809 till about 1815 in the 4th Garrison Battalion (I think).  Family records say that two of his sons were born at Castle Orgueil.

The Jersey Archive has found the baptism of the elder one, Ewen, in St Martin's Church in 1810.  They cannot find anything for my direct forebear, Donald Charles Cameron, whose year of birth is given in family documents as 1813, 1814 or (less likely) 1815.

It's possible that the family may have returned to Scotland before Donald was baptised but they probably did not leave Jersey till 1815.

I'm trying to establish when my gggrandfather was actually born.  Help!  Any information on his birth or baptism, or on the 4th Garrison Battalion or Lt John Cameron, would be very gratefully received!

Australia / an****y.com.au on the ABC
« on: Thursday 03 June 10 09:59 BST (UK)  »
Every now and then, on Tony Delroy's Nightlife program (local radio, 10.15 pm) there is a Man from A. on for three quarters of an hour.  He was on last Wednesday evening.  Nothing earthshattering, but he talks generally about family history and what you can find on the web, and there is a  twenty minutes period when people can ring and ask questions.

Interesting listening if you are a sad case/obsessive compulsive like me!  ;D

I'm sure he'll be on again some time - worth keeping an ear open.

Armed Forces / Irish cavalry regiments 1850s?
« on: Monday 19 April 10 11:40 BST (UK)  »
My ggrandfather Edmund Huband-Smith was born in Dublin in 1837, studied divinity at Trinity College Dublin and was ordained to the Anglican ministry in Lichfield, Staffordshire in 1861.  Later that decade he emigrated to Australia, where he spent the rest of his life.

He was reputedly a very fine horseman, and there is a family story that he belonged to a cavalry regiment before entering the ministry.  It is just possible that he may have done this for a couple of years.  But I have absolutely no idea whether it is possible to research this.  I know that Irish records have many large gaps.

Can anyone help or advise me - please??  I'd be most grateful for any assistance!
