Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Strange Item of jewellery - any ideas please
« on: Wednesday 10 December 14 14:53 GMT (UK)  »
The above piece is made of none uk silver,  about 3" in depth and hinged. My friend found it among her mothers possessions and is curious to know what it is and if it has a purpose.  Her Mother came from a Russian Jewish family who arrived in the UK in about 1900.  We have no idea if the piece is connected to her origins.

Would be grateful for any ideas.

Hi, this is a photo of my lovely Uncle Joe during the second world war.  I would really appreciate it if someone could get rid of all the blotches for me.

Thanks, Elin

Armed Forces / Napoleonic Wars
« on: Friday 13 September 13 13:43 BST (UK)  »
I was excited to discover recently that one of my ancestors, John Selby Howell of Stroud was pressganged in Bristol around 1800.

What I know from his obituary and from that of his son is that he was taken in early youth having been born in 1786 in Stroud.  He served for around 12 years.  His last ship was The York and he
received a medal for the taking of Martinique.
Also The York was alongside The Northumberland at the time Napoleon was taken on board.

He was made a steward by Admiral Parker and became Paymaster on the York.

I would love to find out more about all this and would be very grateful if anybody has any suggestions on where to look.

Thank you, Elin

World War Two / Service Number?
« on: Tuesday 23 July 13 14:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am applying for my father's service record number from the second world war.
I don't have his service number but I recently wrote to the MOD Service Records Office to enquire
about his medals.  This was their ref no:  ARMY/1506628.      Could it be my dad's service number?

Thanks for any help,

Elin

I know this is a dreadful copy but it is all that I have.  I think that it is my great grandma and
an idea of the date would help me to be sure.  If she could be tidied up a bit I would be very grateful!

Thanks, Elin

The Common Room / Birth registration late 1890s/early 1900s
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 18:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have several ancestors (mainly from Somerset) who although appearing on the 1901/1911 Census
appear to be registered in 1915.  Some of them have really distinctive names and although I haven't invested in certificates it does appear to be them.

Was there some sort of Amnesty in 1915 whereby unregistered people had to get registered?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Restoration would be lovely!!
« on: Sunday 10 February 13 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
This is the only existing childhood photograph of my friends sister.  My friend would love to send her a birthday ecard with a restored version.

If anyone fancies doing a colour version, she had very dark black hair and brown eyes.

Thank you

Elin  :)

Technical Help / To dongle or not to dongle
« on: Friday 02 November 12 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have arranged to change my phone and broadband supplier but have now been told it could take
a couple of months to get my broadband.  The supplier have made various offers to get me to continue including offering to pay for a dongle for me in the interim.  They would credit me with £30.

I know nothing about dongles and wonder if any of you could advise me on if it would be suitable and
what I should buy.  The phone company suggest that I could buy one for ten pounds.

It will save me money if I change supplier but I'm not sure that it is worth it if I have a load of hassle.

Help!!

The Common Room / Aeroplanist in 1911
« on: Thursday 05 July 12 15:20 BST (UK)  »
In the 1911 Census the occupation of one of my relatives was given as an aeroplanist.
She was a 23 year old woman!  Could that really mean that she flew an aeroplane?  :)
