Armed Forces / can anyone identify these uniforms please
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 22:12 GMT (UK)  »
I amresearching my family history and have recently come across some family photos that I was hoping you could help me with. I have no idea what regiment or year these photo’s are from, except for photo number 2.

I was hoping someone may take a look and see if you could identify them

Photo number 2 is my grand dad. He served with the Royal horse Artillery and served in both the first and second world wars, and I think this was the Hockey team maybe.
The other photos are possibly William Oakley and other family members.

Armed Forces / Where were the 19th hussars in 1911
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
HI please can someone with more military knowledge than me help me with the history of the hussars.
i am slightly confused with there where abouts.
My husbands great great grandfather was serving with the Hussars , and i am presuming that in 1897 they were stationed in india, as while there they had a son born 1897,  on his birth certificate it states father william oakley rank 19th hussars reg no 3182.
Then on the 1901 census, Williams wife Mary and thier son were living back in uk at the canterbury barracks kent.
William can then be found on another census at canterbury barracks but residing seperate from mary. (looks like all the 19th hussars were living together on this census all men)

So my questions are, would William of been in india in 1897, or possible in africa (as i thought thats where the hussars were in 1897) if so was it normal for wifes and families to stay in india and not return to uk.

Would it be possible that when the whole family returned to uk which i am presuming must of been 1900/1901 going by the census info, they would of gone to reside at different quarters on the same barracks.

Sorry but my history is not that good. I have googled and looked on many advised sites, but find i get lost with it all.
Where did the hussars go after 1901?

I cannot find any of them on the 1911 census, but there is a death for a willian oakley in 1903 canterbury. (not sure if this is my william i will have to get the certificate)
If it was his death it could explain why i can't find mary and albert on 1911 census  if she remarried.

He does not appear on any of the boer war medal records that i can see. Was not every soldier in the boer war issued a medal?

Armed Forces / 19th Hussars serving in india in 1897
« on: Monday 07 September 09 12:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi help needed please.
Great grandfather was William Oakley born ? served in secunderbad  india in the 19th Hussars married Mary Williams had 1 child that i know of Albert Edward Oakley.
Albert was born in india. On Alberts birth certificate, it states William was a lance corperal reg no 3182.
I am not sure when his service in india started, but he was there in 1987 when Albert was born.
In 1901 Mary and Albert had returned to the uk and was living in the canterbury barracks in york.
Would this indicate that William was still in india ( was it normal for wifes and children to come home while thier husbands were stilll serving.)
Also how do i trace records for this period, as ancestry does not seem to be coming up with anything for me.
Thank you all help apprieciated.

Hi i am researching my husbands grandad and his great grandad.
But i am drawing total blanks on the little info i have. Please would someone with more knowledge take a look at the info i have and tell me the best places to search for records.
Great grandfather was William Oakley born ? served in india in the 19th Hussars married Mary Williams had 1 child that i know of Albert Edward Oakley born 1897 secunderabad india. on Alberts birth certificate it states William was a lance corperal serving with the 19th hussars reg no 3182.
In the 1901 Mary and Albert had returned to uk and were residing at the canterbury Barracks in Kent. William is not shown on this census, and i cannot find him anywhere.
Albert Oakley married Gladys Newcombe in 1934? they had 3 children XXXX
I need to find out where William was in 1901.
If anyone can help me with this it would be great.
