World War One / Albert Henry Jarvis - MGC
« on: Wednesday 10 August 11 22:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm a bit short of resources at the moment and wondered if some kind soul could do a look up for me please  ;)

Albert Henry Jarvis enlisted on 10/9/14 with 2nd Battalion City of London Regiment. He has two London Regiment service numbers by the looks of it; 2649 and 8860. He was disembodied 16/2/19 from 56 Battalion MGC, as Sergeant 25834.

I would like to know his medal entitlement and date of entry.

I would also like to know, if by any chance of fortune, his service record survives.

He was awarded the MM and Bar. I have the LG entries and as a bonus, the citation for the Bar.

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Armed Forces / Charles Gatton - District Court Martial
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 17:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

My Great-Grandfather, Charles Gatton, Pte 743, Royal Sussex Regiment, was hauled before a District Court Martial on or about 3rd July 1882. He was sentenced to 168 days imprisonment, but his service record does not say why.

To find out the charge, is it as simple as looking up the entry in the relevant volume, by date, of WO 86?

Are there likely to be further details in the regimental records, which I believe are held at West Sussex Record Office?

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Wallace TRUSCOTT, 1901 look up please
« on: Monday 25 May 09 19:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

Could some-one please help with a look-up in the 1901 census for Wallace Ambrose Truscott, born 1885 in Merther.

I am trying to find out about his earlier years, to add to the information I have for his final years:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,372460.0.html

The nearest match I can see on the index is Wallace Trusell, age 15, in St Clement Urban. Is it a bad transcription?

I am also trying to locate his parents in 1901: Richard, born about 1844 and Ellen, born about 1847. There is an Ellen of about the right age and born Probus, in St Clement Urban, but I can't see a Richard.
In 1911 Richard and Ellen appear to be in St Columb, with sons Jabez and George.

Thanks to the excellent Cornwall OPC's I have the earlier data.

Many thanks in advance,

Phil

World War One / Wallace A Truscott
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 20:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I need some help.  :D

I am trying to find some info on Wallace Ambrose Truscott. His MIC on the NA index gives Wallace A Truscott, Pte 4958 and 303020, London Regiment. I believe he may have been in 1/5 or 2/5 (City of London) Battalion (London Rifle Brigade).

From what I can glean from FreeBMD, he was born Truro in 1885, married Elsie Paine in Lewisham 1914 and they had a son Derrick, born 1916.

Wallace died June Qu. 1918, age 32 (Lewisham 1d 1112). He is commemorated on two war memorials in Lee (Borough of Lewisham); St Mildreds and Church of the Good Shepherd.

So far, I have been unable to find him on CWGC or SDGW.

I do not partake in A***y at this point in time, but can see three hits in the Pensions records for what may be him.  ;)

Specifically, I am looking for his occupation on enlistment; if, why and when he was discharged (SWB?) and any record of how he died.

Many thanks,

Phil

World War One / Lt S H Snelgrove.... translation required
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

Could someone help me with a translation please.

The attached is from an Enquiry made by the British War Office on behalf of the father of Lt Sidney Henry Snelgrove, attached to the 7th Bn KRRC, who was reported missing in action 30/31st July 1915 at Hooge.

I can guess the drift of it, but am hoping that someone can give me a proper translation.

Many thanks,
Phil

Technical Help / Amazon pop-overs
« on: Saturday 20 September 08 20:51 BST (UK)  »
As no-one else appears to have reported it, I assume this is a problem with my computer.

Since yesterday it has been taking about 30 seconds to load RC pages.
While I am waiting I get "Downloading data http ://cls.assoc-amazon.co.uk/images/popover.css...." at the bottom of the screen. (Space left after http to deliberately break the link), followed by "Downloading picture" etc etc for a further period.

If I hover over one of the pop-over links on a page, I can see the url at the bottom of the screen, but the link does not pop up (which is one advantage I suppose).

I've tried Trystan's blocked cookie tester and everything appears to work and I don't seem to have any problems with other sites, including log-ins etc. McAfee did a scheduled scan this afternoon and no problems or nasties were reported. I have XP Home with SP3 inadvertently, automatically installed

All suggestions welcome.

England / A H White: Death October 1919
« on: Sunday 24 August 08 16:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Could someone please help me with the GRO Death Index for October Quarter 1919. The pages are not on FreeBMD or Ancestry for some reason.

I am looking for an A H White, (full name and age unknown), who died 11th October 1919 and is buried in Forest Row Cemetery in East Sussex. If he died at home, he will be in East Grinstead or Uckfield Registration Districts, but as he was possibly still in the army at the time, he could be anywhere.

Thanks in advance,

Phil
