World War One / Three Mawbey brothers in World War One
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 21:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, Im not exactly sure where to start with researching military records but ive given it a go!

I recently found on ancestry that 3 of my great uncles were participants in the first war. Their names are Joseph Mawbey (born 1888 Glamorgan), Walter Mawbey (born 1890 Westmorland) and Arthur Mawbey (born 1893 Totley, Derbyshire).

The records found for Joseph show that he entered the war in Feb-March 1915, with the 18th Battalion i think for middlesex? One of the records shows his advancement through the ranks, but as im not from a military background, i can only pick out the obvious promotions.. I think he went from private through to sergeant then to a ''R2MS''?? (im sorry i have no idea what that might have been). The note below this says that he was a candidate for commision and the next rank he received was a Quartermaster Sergeant. I do know that he received 5 medals through the war and saw through to the end. After that, i am unsure as to what happpened to him, whether he stayed in the army and took part in WW2 or left.

For Walter, i know very little. Other than he was KIA. He died on the 7th of July, 1915. He has a gravestone in the Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Heuvelland, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot/Row/Section J grave 45.

Arthur... well again, i dont know much about his involvement. The records found for him show he was in the Labour Corps. I think he was originally in the Yorkshire Light Infantry as on his record, it has been crossed out. There is also a note saying 'Malaria Base, not available for a theatre of war where malaria is prevelant. His number for the Yorkshire light infantry was 20983 and for the Labour Corps it was 389197. He also joined in January 1915. There are some other records attached to Arthur, but i am finding it difficult to read them.

My reasoning for posting is i am hoping that someone might be able to point me in the direction where i can actually find out which engagements they took part in, where they went and what exactly happened to Walter. Any help with these three will be greatly appreciated. As i said, im not from a military background so i apologise if i have made any mistakes in my research.

Thanks in advance!!

Northumberland Lookup Requests / William Blakey, Baptism look up 1802
« on: Friday 24 April 09 19:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with William Blakey. According to the census records i have found for william, he was born in Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland around 1802. However i havent been able to find a birth record for him.

His marriage does not say who his parents were.

I have found a record on Ancestry and also the same record on IGI for a william blakey christened in All saints, Newcastle, Northumberland in 1801. But Im not sure how to take this as i believe that it was quite a distance to Newcastle from Berwick. I would have to ask myself why would someone travel so far to have their child baptised there....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Katrina

Durham Lookup Requests / Birth/Christening lookup request: Tate abt 1811
« on: Thursday 16 April 09 22:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Im not sure if I have asked this already, but i have checked to see if i have made any posts regarding a Thomas Tate about his birth or any information on his parents, and havent found any threads...

I created a thread in the Northumberland section regarding a marriage between a Thomas Tate and an Annabella Trewhitt. After receiving some fantastic information, i now have the problem in trying to find out when exactly Thomas Tate was born, and who his parents might be.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,368916.msg2437857.html#msg2437857 is the previous topic.

I believe Thomas Tate was born around 1811 in Sunderland, Durham. I have found him in the 51/61 and 71 census, and believe he died in 1872. All the census records say his place of birth was Sunderland, Durham. As mentioned in the previous thread, i have struggled to find Thomas in the 41 census as he is not with any of his family. The only possibility is one record showing a Thomas, aged 28, and a Mary aged 1. The reason why i think this is the same Thomas is because he is a mill wright, and he was born in Sunderland.

I have tried looking through IGI, Freereg and the bishops transcripts but unfortunately cannot find Thomas. I dont know if i have just missed him... or if he is simply not there in the birth records.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it, as i am beginning to loose hope with this Thomas :(

Thanks in advance,

Katrina.

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help me with a William Mawby born around 1777 in Crick, Northamptonshire. I know that in 1799 William married a Mary Hopkins in Crick (information is on IGI). I havent been able to get hold of the actual parish records, so do not know who his parents are.

What im after really is any information on his birth, his parents and if there are any other siblings.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Katrina.

Suffolk / CHAMBERS - Information pre 1800
« on: Friday 10 April 09 18:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could do me a huge favour with some Chambers. I created a thread on here previously about Charles Chambers, born in Suffolk looking for a marriage. Some people kindly found out that information for me. They also found out Charles' father... Samuel Chambers.

Im afraid i am at a total loggerheads with finding any information out about Samuel, who he was married to or any other children.

This is the marriage information kindly found for me previously:

Taken from Wrentham parish register

Marriage
10th October 1837
Charles Chambers bachelor 23 labourer of Sotterley
Hannah Proctor spinster 25 of Sotterley
Fathers: Samuel Chambers labourer, Lewis Proctor labourer
Witnesses: John Chambers, Mary Howlett
Rector: Henry M Barlow

I have looked on IGI for possible children, i have seen one entry for a Charles:

Quote

Christening:  26 FEB 1815   Wrentham, Suffolk, England
Parents:
  Father:  JOHN CHAMBERS  Family
  Mother:  MARIANNE

As you can see, the father doesnt match, however one of the witnesses for Charles at his wedding was John.

this is the other possibility for his father to be Samuel...

Quote
Charles Chambers Pedigree
Birth:     South Elmham-St James, , Suffolk, England
Christening:  21 JAN 1810   South Elmham-St James, , Suffolk, England

Parents:
  Father:  Sam.  Family
  Mother:  Martha Bedal

the last possibility could be a birth record from 1823 with the parents being Samuel Chambers and an Elizabeth. However, that would suggest that Charles wasnt baptised straight away, or if he was, he would have been the wrong age at marriage (only 14)

Any information would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance.

Europe / Incoming Passenger Lists 1878-1911 - look-up request
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 17:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I was hoping if someone was able to help me try and track my great Grandad, Antonio Tetesagge (spelling could be grossly mispelt) who was born in Italy and came to england prior to 1911. Im not sure when he came to England, but i know his father was called Peter Tetesagge. Again, with the spelling.. im not entirely certain on it, as it was an englishman writing it down, could be hard to understand an italian accent.

I know that Antonio was in england prior to Oct 1911, as he married a Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Chambers in tynemouth, 1911 aged 28. On the marriage certificate, the surname is Tetesagge. Peter, Antonio's father is deceased. Antonio's occupation at the time of marriage was Ice cream vendor.

It has been suggested that Antonio may have used the name Tedesco in the 1901 census... but i have absolutely nothing to connect Antonio Tetesagge with this person i have found in the 1901 census other than the fact that a few years later (about 1916/7) Antonio changed his name to Tedesco.

I have tried doing searches for the surname Tetesagge but it is bringing up zip for Antonio. The surname doesnt even seem to appear when you do an Italian surname search :(

Any help will be greatly appreciated as i honestly do not know where to look for Antonio at all!!!

Thanks in advance,

Kat

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Marriage Lookup, pre1839 Tate - Treuhill (?)
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 18:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone was able to help me try and find a marriage between a Thomas Tate and an Anna Bella Treuhill.

I have a birth certificate for an Anna Bella Tate born 21st July 1839, Beacon Street in the Parish of Tynemouth. It shows her parents to be Thomas Tate, a Mill Wright, and Anna Bella Tate nee Treuhill/trouhill (not sure on spelling, cant find her anywhere).

I have found them in the 51/61 and 71 census but Anna Bella's age varies quite a bit.

Thomas was born in Sunderland, and according to the 51 census so was Anna Bella. However in the 61 census Anna Bella was born in North Sheilds.

I have tried searching the 41 census as well, but have only been able to pick out an Ann Tate in Tynemouth with 6 children aged 44. I couldnt Find Thomas or Anna Bella Tate (born 1839).

After looking through the North Shields census I found a Thomas Tate with a child called Mary. His occupation is correct, his age is also just about correct the childs age is correct, but the childs name isnt.

I think thats just about everything i know on these Tates,

Any help will be greatly appreciated....

Thanks in advance,

Kat

Family History Beginners Board / Reading Census records
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone, ive just come across a problem with the 1861 census in the marriage section.

I have a Mary A Blakey in Tynemouth who is neither married, widowed or unmarried. I cannot tell what the word is that is in the column for marriage status.

Could anything else be put in to this column other than married/unmarried or widowed???

Thanks in advance,

katrina.
