Anyone know if there is anywhere to locate baptisms for the salford area.  Im hqving no luck tracing a birth for John Donovan c 1848  Im sure the answer is down to a mispelling of the surname.  Would like therefore to trace the baptism, would be grateful for any info.  Thanks

Wexford / Bridget Carroll born 1881 Duke St Wexford
« on: Friday 22 May 09 15:28 BST (UK)  »
I have just received the birth cert of my gt grandmother.  We originally thought she was born in Enniscorthy, but the birth cert states Duke Street, Wexford.
Her parents were Patrick Carroll fisherman (originally told he was a mariner) and Margaret Neil.  Does anyone have any info on this family that might help me further in my search.  Thanks

Down / Hugh Ryan b 1797 & niece Rose b 1835
« on: Friday 08 May 09 23:06 BST (UK)  »
Hugh appears on the 1851 census living with his sister Jane Logan in L'pool, she was widowed in 1840.  He appears again in 1861, with his sister and a niece Rose Ryan.  They both hail from Co Down, I have found two possible baptisms for a Rose Ryan in Clonallon Co Down one in 1834 and the other 1838.  I cannot find a birth for Hugh the only one I can find is in Co Louth.  Any clues where to go next would be appreciated.

Wondering if anyone can do a look up for any "Donovan's" in the directory.  They are from the Salford area and some were working as steeplejacks.  Any leads would be useful.  Thanks

Armed Forces / Navy 1915 - 1920 HMS Vivid & HMS Gossamer
« on: Saturday 20 September 08 19:30 BST (UK)  »
I have my grandfathers naval record for the above time.  He served on HMS Vivid ( which I understand now to be shore barracks) and then on HMS Gossamer a Torpedo Gun Boat which was converted to a minesweeper in 1908.
This is slightly confusing as per his record the Gossamer was indeed described as a Torpedo Gun Boat for the period 25.4.1915 - 3.1.1920.
I have also found an article relating to the HMS Gossamer being a rescue vessell for HMS K13 on 29th Jan 1917.  I am therefore with all this wondering if the ship was used in home waters during the period of WW1.  I understand she was scrapped sometime in 1920.
Any information or views would be helpful.  thanks :)

Durham / Tatham Street Girls Industrial School
« on: Saturday 28 June 08 10:06 BST (UK)  »
I have just found out two sisters of the same family were sent here from Llandudno in North Wales in 1901.  They were Sarah and Ada Childs.   Father has now remarried but can find no trace of their mother Isabella Childs  Im presuming she died but can find no death cert.  Two brothers of the same family were sent to HMS Clio an industrial school for boys which was meant to prepare them for a life at sea!  This was also in North Wales not far from the family home.
I have been told some of these types of schools are also for dilinquent children who may otherwise have been unruly.  Any insight into Tatham Street would be useful  thanks

I have been searching for a marriage of Isabella Roberts( born Conway 1856 daughter of Richard Roberts and Ellen Jones) and Thomas Child (S) born in Bolton 1853.  I have been searching for this for years but no luck even tried scottish records!!  I know that the Roberts family were in Caerhun around the time Isabella was born and then moved to the Salford area, the family had also been in America when older siblings were born.  Thomas is with Isabella up to 1891 census but then by 1901 his wife is Mary?  I can find no trace of Isabella's death either.  Any help would be appreciated.  thanks
