The Common Room / A picture from my student days 40 years ago
« on: Saturday 28 May 05 14:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to identify the people in this photograph. The location was the photographic department of Ealing Technical College .The gentleman middle front is Charles Frazer  as for the others any help in identifying any of them will be a great help  {   1960 + or - 3  years  }   Perhaps the following surnames may strike a cord Mac Dermot, Matherson, Farnfield ,Balcombe,  Pratt, I know the name of the Nigerian and his name was Aladipo McCauley.
Filling in a few of my life's events with  a little detail is proving quite difficult  when memories are rather faint.
many thanks

The Common Room / River Severn Drownings
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 17:59 BST (UK)  »
Several members of my wider family drowned in a boating accident in the River Severn in the early part of the last century.   Unfortunately I have more than one surname that these victims may have gone under.   One of the names is Snow, the next is Kelsey then Carey and finally Stroud.    They were all part of the same family, the mother having been married a number of times.     The only possible forename I have is Lilian Daisy...probably Stroud, but as I have indicated, it could have been any one of the surnames previously mentioned.
Any information or advice on how or where to look for reports of this event would be appreciated.  I have tried Googling for River Severn Accidents&deaths and come up with nothing that fits my criteria.

Thanks
Regards   David.

Queenie Shield, the daughter of another member of the family was  known to me
and became  a pen pal and occasional visitor to my home
Nelly married James Powell a photographer  in Canterbury 1920-60   James had a studio specialising in social portraiture and work for Canterbury school.
Queenie married a merchant navy captain who was murdered at sea.
John Shield Queenies son is the Principal of a college in Cambridgeshire.

Grandmothers second husband Mr Kelsey is said to have been either a police constable { I dont think it's true} or a forman at a gas works.

The Common Room / Family History or Genealogy
« on: Monday 15 November 04 09:06 GMT (UK)  »
I have been very fortunate in having several relatives who have over the years researched the family history.  I can only congratulate them on their work but it  leaves a newcomer like myself only the tidying up and the possibility of adding substance and possibly colour to the lives and times of my forebears.  A family tree is very interesting if you are researching something or other but there the fascination ends. Names and dates alone convey very little, however an occupation, life style, notes,  pictures and perhaps a reference to a place of employment will add considerably to an otherwise boring list of names and dates.
The problem now is not adding historical notes etc.  that is both fun and very rewarding   but requests for childhood memories, copies of old photographs, bmd certificates, are frequently grudgingly received and often ignored. .
It's interesting to note how keen people are to read about someone else but rather unwilling to disclose even insignificant events and details concerning their family.

I will be interested  to read how many of us ,in possession of a tree also have compiled a rather more interesting combined chronicle with as much information as is available.

I understand that documents of a personal nature, or which contain items that  may embarass living members of the family should be removed should the tree as a whole be aired to the general public, but other than that there should be no reasons for any restrictions, when you think about it, all the basic information is out there for anyone to
find in the public domain anyway.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Yateley, Monteagle House , and 2 farms
« on: Sunday 10 October 04 09:54 BST (UK)  »
I am one time owned Lower monteagle Farm and would  welcome any  information regarding the history of Monteagle house and the Names of those who have lived there  The House has connections with Lord Monteagle and the Gun powder Plot. I owned one of the two farms until the land was sold for housing circa 1980s.  Monteagle house is a listed building  and now stands on the borders of a housing estate. Very SAD
