Down / Masseys of Saintfield
« on: Thursday 24 March 16 15:23 GMT (UK)  »
I think that my family history has a link to this store which is currently located in Main Street, Saintfield, Co. Down. The shop is a butchers and is called Masseys of Saintfield.

My relatives were George Batton and Eliza Massey who resided in Tonaghmore, near Saintfield in 1850's until 1867 - that we know of.  George Batton died in Ayrshire, Scotland in September 1872. Some time between his daughter getting married in 1st Saintfield Presbyterian Church in July 1867 and his death in 1872 he moved to Scotland with his sons - John, Samuel, Andrew, Robert and George.  His daughter Ellen moved to Ayrshire in the 1870's.
Eliza Massey was the daughter of Alexander Massey and his wife Susanna. They farmed land in Tonghamore.  Alexander died in November 1872 and his will left everything to wife Susanna and sons William, John and Robert Massey.
We think that Eliza died and George moved to Scotland with his children.
Fast forward to 1901 and there is a Grocer in Saintfield by the name of Alexander Batton and he appears in the 1901 and 1911 Census.   The shop that he works from is the same store that is now Masseys of Saintfield (butcher).
We don't know if this is coincidental with the names Massey and Batton but we would love to hear from anyone who may remember anything, including the history of the current butchers shop.

Thanks
Sandra

Ayrshire / Galston - Batton family
« on: Sunday 15 February 09 17:16 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Great Great Grandfather died on 30th September 1872 in Union Street, Newmilns. Death registered in Galston, Ayrshire and death certificate signed by son Samuel who resided at Burnhouse Cottages.
The Batton family continued (and still continue) to live in the area.
I am trying to find out why George Batton moved from Ireland and went to Galston....
He was listed in Tonaghmore, Saintfield, near Belfast in 1863.
We think he might have came to Galston after his wife Eliza Batton (ms Massey) died.
George and Eliza had the following siblings :
Ellen (Helen) who married James Gordon and lived in Riccarton
John who married Jessie Steel (Galston) and went to USA to live in 1880
Andrew who married Lilias McGregor at Dalserf and lived in Galston until 1901 - then moved to Douglas
Samuel who married Isabella Anderson in Tradeston Glasgow then moved to USA in 1882
Robert? we have him moving to USA in 1882 sailing with Jessie Batton (wife on John).

If anyone can shed any light please let me know.

Down / Batton Gordon Massey families 1870 Saintfield area
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
I believe that my ancestor George Batton lived in Tonaghmore. He shows in Griffiths Valuation in 1863/4
George Batton was married to Eliza Massey and their daughter Ellen married James Gordon at 1st Presbyterian Church in Saintfield on 6th July 1867.  Shows that Ellen lived in Drumnaconnell and James lived in Tullychien? James was the son of James Gordon and Ellen was the daughter of George Batton, Stone Mason.
Witness is showing as Eliza Ferris and Robert Massey.

Can any tell me anything about the Batton family. George and Eliza had the following children :
Ellen born ca 1848, Samuel, John, Andrew, George and Robert.
We know that John was born on 10th June 1852 in Belfast as we found his US passport application complete with photograph in 1920.

George Batton died in Galston, Ayrshire on 30th September 1872. We think that he returned or went to Galston after the death of Eliza Massey. We can find no marriage record for George and Eliza so perhaps they never married.

Ellen and James Gordon's children were born in Ireland until 1873. After the birth of N.John Gordon in 1873 the next son was born in Galston in 1876.

I am trying to find out more about Eliza Massey and George Batton. I can only assume the link with Co. Down from Ellen marrying in Saintfield and George Batton showing in Tonaghmore in 1863/4.

Would appreciate any advice on trying to find out more.
I have tried various emerald ancestors/ancestry ireland websites to no avail....

Sandra

Down / Bernard Ward - Agnes (Nancy) Mullen
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 07:41 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find Bernard Ward and Agnes (Nancy) Mullen on the Irish census.
Both born in Ireland and moved to Lanarkshire, Scotland.
They were married in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in November 1826.
26th November 1826 Marriage Proclamation – both in this parish for 3 days on 12, 19 and 26 November.

Bernard born circa 1801 and Agnes born circa 1806.

Does anyone know where I would be able to search for them in Irish records.
I know very little of their Irish origins...

They appear in the 1841 Census of Hamilton, Lanark – at Back o’ Barnes
Bernard Ward - age 40 years – Labourer. Born Ireland 1801
Nancy (Agnes) Ward age 35 years – Born Ireland 1806
Their 4 children all born in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland:
Margaret age 13 (B1828)
James age 10 (B1831)
Mary age 7 (B1834)
Edward age 4 (B1837)

Any help or pointers you can give to start searching in Irish records....
Thanks

One Name Studies: H to M / KELLY MANNIX MCCARTHY
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 07:47 BST (UK)  »
These surnames are of great interest.

John, Michael Joseph and Bridget Kelly left Ireland between 1840 and early 1850's.
I believe they either lived in Co Clare or Limerick.
They all settled in Lee County, Mississippi.
I know there was a brother James who had died by 1873.
Joseph Kelly married Bridget Mannix - they went to school together back in Ireland.
Bridget Kelly married an irishman by the name of Patrick McCarthy.

Bridget Mannix had a brother John Mannix who lived in Fredericksburg, Virginia then moved to Washington DC. John Mannix had a wife Mary-Ann (born Ireland) and a daughter Sarah Ann (born New York 1851).

John Mannix travelled back to Ireland in August 1873 landing at Queenstown. He travelled to Cork where he stayed with his brother Mick. Mick was working at the depot in Limerick and the other brother James running an engine between Limerick and Wateford. We know that James had 7 children at that time. Mick had a daughter Bridget who was due to marry in August 1873.

John Mannix then travelled to Kilrush then to Kilkee where he spent 8-10 days. Is there where Mannix/Kelly family lived?????

If you have anything which might help me determine where they came from. Please help. I have American family travelling to Scotland in less than 2 weeks in the hope that I might have traced their ancestry......

Limerick / MICKE OR JAMES MANNIX
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 07:34 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information which shows that Mick Mannix and his son were working at the Limerick depot.
His brother James was running an engine from Limerick to Waterford.
This was in August 1873 which John Mannix visited the 2 brothers from his home in Washington, USA. John had a wife Mary-Ann (born Ireland) and a daughter Sarah Ann (born New York 1851).
John Mannix, after spending 3 days in Limerick with brothers he went to Kilrush then on to Kilkee where he spent 8-10 days.
Mick Mannix had a daughter Bridget who married in 1873.
James Mannix had 7 children in August 1873.
There was also a sister Bridget Mannix who was in Mississippi USA at this time and married Joseph Kelly (he had 2 brothers Michael and John Kelly and a sister Bridget Kelly (who married Patrick McCarthy) - the 4 Kelly kin were already in USA living in 1870's.
Assume they all came from the same area of Ireland since they grew up together. Trying to locate where the came from. Help please!
If you know any of the above can you contact me

Cork / KELLY or MANNIX families mid 1800's
« on: Sunday 22 June 08 15:56 BST (UK)  »
I AM TRYING TO TRACE DESCENDANTS OF THE KELLY OR MANNIX FAMILIES WHO GREW UP AND LIVED BESIDE EACH OTHER IN THE 1840'S.

JOHN, MICHAEL, JOSEPH AND BRIDGET KELLY ALL MOVED TO MISSISSIPPI USA BETWEEN 1844 AND 1851.
JOSEPH MARRIED A LOCAL IRISH GIRL NAMED BRIDGET MANNIX.... THEY GREW UP TOGETHER IN CORK.
BRIDGET MANNIX HAD A BROTHER JOHN WHO ALSO MOVED TO USA - FREDERICKBURG, VIRGINIA THEN MOVED TO WASHINGTON WITH HIS WIFE MARY-ANN (ALSO IRISH) AND THEIR ONLY CHILD, SARAH ANN MANNIX *BORN 1851 IN NEW YORK).
WE KNOW THAT JOHN MANNIX TRAVELLED TO IRELAND IN 1873 LANDING IN QUEENSTOWN AND TRAVELLING AS FOLLOWS :-

I started from Washington on the 30th of July 1873 and arrived in New York the next morning. After arriving in New York I engaged passage on a steamer which was to sail on that day. We made the run fro N.Y. to Queenstown in 9 days where I landed. We had a splendid run of it going home and I enjoyed Myself splendid.

I stayed in Cork 3 days and then went to Limerick. After getting there I went in search of my Brother whom I found at his old station at the Limerick depot. When I went into the yard where the men at work I asked a small boy which happened to be Mick's son if there was a man name of Micke Mannix in the yard. He said there was and ran and told his father who came out at once. I asked him was his name Mannix. He said yes. I told him I had a letter from his Brother in America for him. He looked at me for a long time and talked. Still I did not let myself knowing to him. We had a long talk. Finally he knew me. He is looking well. I went home with him and remained there 3 days. James came in the next morning.

He is running an engine from Limerick to Waterford. He is a fine hearty fellow.
I went from Limerick to Kilrush. From then to Kilkee where I remained for 8 or 10
days, but it done me no good. Tell Bridget that Micke daughter is a fine young girl. I expect she is married by this time as she was on the eve of doing so when I was there. Micke has a very large family and it takes the poor fellow every cent he can make for to feed them.

If this is familiar to anyone locally please get in touch with me. There must still be Mannix relatives who had John and Bridget Mannix move to USA in the mid 1840;s...

Thanks
Sandra
