hi,

in the 1911 census i have a 16 year old boy whose occupation was given as a monitor. the major employer in the area at the time would have been in a mill.both his parents,by the way, were teachers. does anyone have an idea what this job was?

New Zealand Completed Requests / information on death certificate-completed
« on: Sunday 30 November 08 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
hi, i received the print out of a death cert yesterday but its whats missing from it is what i want to ask about.

in the section "if issue living..." was blank, is this common to be left out? i know she had children alive at the time of death so was wondering why this would be omitted. the informant was the undertaker, F Hittle? auckland.

Ireland / missing thread/post?
« on: Friday 28 November 08 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
hi,
i put a post on the ireland general board today with a link to another board on rootschat that i thought would be of interest to others who maybe didn't catch it. i've just noticed that the thread is "missing". could i ask a moderator; where did the thread go? was it deleted?and if so why?

if i broke any rules then i would like to know so i dont repeat it in the future :)
cheers,

New Zealand Completed Requests / ordering a death print-out
« on: Saturday 08 November 08 21:08 GMT (UK)  »
hi,
i'm about to "try" and order a death print out for someone who died in auckland but i cant find if i can do this by e-mail? if i have to resort to the telephone then i can see difficulties arising with my northern ireland accent :)
especially with my pronounciation of the name of the graveyard, waikaraka.
can i order the print-out by e-mail or do i have to do it by telephone? :(
waikaraka pronounced why ka ra ka?

Ireland / ribbonism
« on: Sunday 27 July 08 23:34 BST (UK)  »
i was looking through irish transportation records today when i came across a record of a man who was sent to australia for the crime of "ribbonism"!
did a goggle and found this;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ribbonmen

i hadn't heard the term before and just thought i'd post it in case someone comes up with it in their searching.
apparently you didn't need to commit the crimes that they commited, just having a green ribbon in your possession was enough to get you a free boat trip to the southern hemisphere ::)

The Common Room / hozack
« on: Tuesday 22 July 08 23:54 BST (UK)  »
hi,

i spent an enjoyable afternoon walking around graveyards looking for family members when i came across the name hozack. in a graveyard in gilford county down this name sticks out a mile! i'd never heard of it before.

i copied down names and dates so if anyone is interested in that name i would gladly give them the information.
