Australia / South Australia: the surname 'Capel' COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 17 January 24 13:45 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if any researcher has come across the surname CAPEL? My person of interest (forename not known) arrived Port Adelaide, February 1851. I'd be grateful to know of any mention of the name in the second half of the 1800s.

Suffolk / Darking of Haverhill
« on: Friday 15 December 23 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested (for a rather complicated reason) in JAMES DARKING born in HAVERHILL in or around 1790. James worked as a croupier in the notorious London gambling club, Crockfords. His colleague was my ancestor Henry Page, whose mysterious origins I have been working on for quite some time.
In 1828 one of Henry Page's sons was given the unusual middle name HAVERHILL. If I can get a handle on why this name was chosen, it might give me a clue to unlock more of my ancestor's life details. If any list member has come across any information on James Darking, I'd be very interested, and grateful to be able to share it. I realise that Darking is not an uncommon name in Haverhill.

The Common Room / Probate search
« on: Monday 25 April 22 15:36 BST (UK)  »
In ordering a probate / will via gov.uk I filled in the online order, and my payment of £1.50 was accepted. I was emailed a receipt. However, at no point during the ordering process was any mention made of the likely delivery date of the item. Can someone who has recently used this service give me some idea of how long it takes for the item to be delivered?

Suffolk / Teacher in Bury St Edmunds, 1914
« on: Tuesday 19 April 22 18:14 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who was a teacher in Bury St Edmunds for a few years up the end of 1914, when he enlisted in the army. Can someone with knowledge of Bury at that time suggest the names of schools in which my ancestor may have been employed?

He went into teaching, from a fairly humble background, having been a Pupil Teacher. This background may suggest the type of school in which he worked.

From the Bury Free Press [30 Jan 1915]: ‘Mr Smith had reported that Mr … had left, having enlisted … The Chairman said Mr … wrote to him and said he was answering his country’s call…’ I would guess that Mr Smith was probably the head teacher. Any help very gratefully received.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Horsfall death 1941
« on: Sunday 17 April 22 12:49 BST (UK)  »
A long shot––has any researcher come across a Tom Horsfall (not Thomas) who died 1941 aged 60?

FreeBMD gives the registration district as York, and I understand that this encompasses all of the three ridings.

Do you think I should post this request also in the West and East Riding forums?

The Common Room / Custody of a child, early 1930s
« on: Sunday 13 September 20 18:26 BST (UK)  »
I wonder whether anyone might have some knowledge of how child custody cases would have been heard and settled in the early 1930s? Late in his life my father spoke of being asked 'in a court' which parent he would prefer to live with. He was about six at the time. His parents' marriage had broken down, though I don't at present know whether the couple became officially divorced. If such custody issues were handled in a court of some kind, would there be surviving records?

Is anyone able to identify this ATS badge, worn just above the pocket?

This may be a lost cause, but I'd be grateful for suggestions from gifted decipherers ... This is underneath the studio photo of a baby.

World War One / Reasons for discharge from the army during WW1
« on: Tuesday 16 June 20 14:21 BST (UK)  »
Part of my research concerns an ancestor who disappears c. 1923 from all records I've been able to find. He had been a sergeant in the Lancs Fusiliers and was discharged in 1917 with 'wounds' (no detail specified.
He had been a school teacher prior to enlisting in Jan 1915. In the years following his discharge he was getting into lots of trouble, including a couple of spells of imprisonment for drunkenness, violence and assaults on the police––complete change of character. To someone in our times reading reports of his behaviour, it seems likely that he was suffering from what we now call PTSD (though his army service was never mentioned in the court cases brought against him).

My question––would PTSD-like behaviour ever result in discharge? And would the documented reason for discharge ever be classified as 'wounds'?
