Angus (Forfarshire) / spalding
« on: Saturday 16 October 21 17:12 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody know anything about Jane Spalding born around 1813 and Elizabeth Spalding born around 1826. I have very little information but I think they may have been sisters and they may have had connections with Angus.

Aberdeenshire / Thomas Burns-any bright ideas?
« on: Sunday 27 December 09 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Has anybody got any bright ideas of where I can look for more info about Thomas Burns? I can't find any trace of his birth, early life or death although the years when he was married to Rachel Burnett are well documented. He just seems to apear out of the blue and then disappear back into it.
This is what I know:

Thomas marries Rachel Burnett at Keith Hall in 1861. He gives his age as 26 but he gives no occupation. His father is given as James Burns, agricultural worker and his mother as Isabella Burns née Waters (?difficult to read). He is able to sign his name while Rachel is not. Both give usual address as Keith Hall.

I can’t find a satisfactory census entry for Thomas in 1861. There is a Thomas Burns who is a ploughman in Fintray aged 20 born in Peebles in the 1861 census. Fintray is about 5 miles away and it is the place where their first son was born. The only thing is that Thomas seems too young.

In 1866 when his son Thomas is born our Thomas is present in Aberdeen. Occupation: ship builder’s labourer.

In 1871 the family is living all together in Aberdeen. Thomas, age 39, is a Hammerman. Born in Peebles.

On 2nd January 1872 Thomas registered the birth of his fourth child James and gives his occupation as a blacksmith’s hammerman.

On 29th January 1872 Thomas registered the death of his first son John, age 9, from smallpox.

In 1881 Rachel is a widow. So if she is not telling a lie, Thomas died between 1872 and 1881 (which would fit in with the smallpox). But his death is completely missing. Did he go off on a ship? Did he die from smallpox? Did he abandon the family?

In 1891 Rachel is head of the family. She again declares she is a widow.

So we have three different ages for Thomas:
1861 aged 20 so he would be born in c1841 (maybe it was transcribed wrongly and the 0 was actually a 6 – that is possible and would fit in).
1861 aged 26 so he would be born in c1835
1871 aged 39 so he would be born in c1832

I can’t find his death anywhere and he isn’t listed in the smallpox hospital. Why did he disappear? As the family later went to Dundee I thought he might have gone on ahead and died there but I can’t find any trace of him there either.

I can’t find any trace of his birth either but I suppose that was possible at the time as they didn’t always bother about these things.

(In 1867 an Isabella Burns dies in Peebles age 66. Her son Thomas is the informant. Her husband is given as Thomas (not James), a shepherd and her Thomas gives his address as Traquair something, doesn’t look like house but can’t read the word.)

What I need is someone who can give me an idea of how to move forward.

Thanks

Scotland / What does FS mean?
« on: Thursday 27 August 09 13:13 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me please what these two letters FS (I think) mean. They are on the 1841 census for Perthshire. Could it be Farm Servant?
Thank you

United States of America / Alexander Proctor and Euphemia Brown
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 14:26 BST (UK)  »
Looking for information about and living descendants of Euphemia Brown who married Alexander Proctor (both from Scotland). She was also called Effie. She arrived in the USA in 1872, I believe) and lived in Northampton Mass. Her sister Jemima Brown arrived around 1909 from Dundee. Effie and Alexander had some children: I know of John, Emma, Harriet and Margerite. I'm particularly interested to know if there are living descendants and also what happened to Jemima (who was a nurse).
I forgot to add that Euphemia (Effie) and Jemima were my grandmother's sisters.
Thank you

World War One / Civilian death in WW1
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 20:15 GMT (UK)  »
This is not really about armed forces. My grandparents were killed as they were travelling to India in Dec. 1915 when the ship they were on - the SS Persia - was torpedoed in the Med. Sea by the Germans. They came from Dundee but I can't find any mention of their deaths on Scotlands People. Their deaths must be registered somewhere but I can't find where. I assume that their sons would have to had a death certificate for inheritance purposes. Would they have had to wait and have a presumed death declared? If so does anybody know how long after? Or would they automatically have been registered in some central place?
Thanks for your help

My grandparents died on SS Persia when it was torpedoed in the Med in Dec. 1915 on its way to India. Where would their deaths be registered and how long would it take for them to be registered? (As far as I know their bodies were never recoverd). They were from Dundee but I can't find any trace of their deaths on Scotlands People.

Does anybody know where exactly Back Street was in Dundee? I can't find it on any maps so I assume it doesn't exist any more or has changed name. Thanks
