Hi there,

I've been having a problem this weekend, when typing a long message that exceeds the "message box", that the visible part of the message sort of returns to the top of the message, and then bounces down again when I type another letter, before returning to the top of my message. It means that I can't actually follow what I'm typing. To check the message I have to pause and scroll back down after each letter typed...

Its a little frustrating, and I've deleted some parts of a message in error.

I hope that you can understand my problem and if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong or how I can fix it, please let me know!

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me solve a bit of a headache! My FTM programme has had a couple of wobbles recently and I'd like to rectify this.

A couple of years ago, I purchased Family Tree Maker 2008 (New UK Version Platinum).  For a long time, I enthusiastically attached files that I had collected, such as jpg's, tiff's, pdf's etc. I've no idea what I did, but after 18 months the file went from 93, 000KB to 300, 000KB in 3 weeks!  It now takes up some 410, 000KB and takes some 6 minutes to back up.  Now I'm not very particularly great at IT but my husband is and he thinks that it may be the size of my files thats the issue. As I've nothing to compare my stuff to I thought I'd see if anyone else has had issues/solved this issue etc?

Are there size limitations to this software?
What do I do to make it smaller (and hopefully more stable)?
I've thought about deleting or transferring all the media files to a separate directory. Would that make a difference? Is it safe to do so, and how do you do that?

Looking forward to any suggestions!

Best wishes, Jimmijam

Canada / Milne from Scotland via USA to Canada
« on: Friday 10 December 10 23:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,
I'm looking for living descendants of James Milne, born Scone, Perthshire, Scotland to Catherine Cochrane and James Milne, who emigrated C1880's.

Uncle Ernest visited Scotland WW2.

I believe the Milne family lived in Saskatchewan.

It would be great to get a reply, or with more details, please get in touch, via PM.

The Common Room / Problems searching for IGI Batch Files?
« on: Tuesday 07 December 10 12:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,
Is anyone else having problems with name searches on IGI Batch files? It was fine at the weekend, but today, its coming up with "page not found". I'm wondering if the new beta site and reorganisation is affecting these search routes?

Best wishes, Jimmijam

Scotland / Completed-Registering a Still Birth in Scotland 1880's
« on: Tuesday 07 December 10 10:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

Does anyone know if babies births were registered in Scotland, if they were stillborn?

I'm asking as my mum remembers talk of her great grandmother having twins who sadly died at birth, c1880-1905 Perth.

Now, I've checked Scotlandspeople for births in the area and purchased certificates, but with no luck. I've also searched for deaths and again there's nothing there.

What I noticed, on several different searches for death certificates on different surnames, that  there were few deaths where the age was 0. I'd have thought that there would have been many more registered.  What I'm wondering is whether these births would have been registered, or is there a different method of handling this situation?

Many thanks for any advice offered.

Hi there,
I have found an excerpt from a Swedish Newspaper, "Folkets rost" of 1859-07-09, concerning the schooner, "The Lady of Mugdrum".  I'd be absolutely delighted if anyone can help with the translation.  I'll attach the newspaper excerpt with this post, but as best as I can summarise and copy, it starts:

 "Sjofarande. ...

Gravesund den 30 Juni   ...

den 1 Juli ...

... Catherina. Knoll fran Gotheborg; Anna, Holmberg och Anna Jacob.na, Mahlstedt fran dito; den 2. Comet Balfour fran Marstrand; Lady of Mugdrum; Wishart fran Landskrona ...
"

It forms part of a list, I think of Shipping Intelligence, stating dates and locations, where certain ships were travelling from or to, but I'm only guessing. The entire page is found here:

http://magasin.kb.se:8080/searchinterface/page.jsp?issue_id=kb:55609&sequence_number=3&recordNumber=&totalRecordNumber=

I'd be delighted if anyone could translate around this excerpt as I'm trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the death of my 4x gt grandfather, James Whittet. He was the captain of this ship and it was lost in a storm off Sweden in 1860. I have posted before on this, as I tried to find out what happened to him. If you're interested, the other thread is here:

If anyone is able to translate this article, it might give me some further reference to his voyages.

Many thanks in advance, Jimmijam
