Census and Resource Discussion / Vessels - 1851 Census
« on: Friday 27 January 12 10:36 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if the 1851 Census covered those at sea?  or did they just not bother?  If Vessels are covered, does anyone know how I can access them with or without a surname?

In susbsequent censuses, the County of the ship's homeport was used, then 'Vessels' as the Parish, then the ship's name as District;  this doesn't seem to have happened in the 1851 records.

Any help/advice/comments much appreciated.

Many thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Look Up request LEIGHTON
« on: Friday 23 December 11 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
Is there any chance that someone has any residential directory for 1921 covering Marylebone, London?

If so - any entry containing surname LEIGHTON living in any street with PORTLAND in its name (e.g. Portland Terrace / Street/ Great Portland Street, etc)?

Undying gratitude will be forthcoming.

Happy Christmas

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Family Name Change - Seery to Stewart
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 16:06 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching a STEWART Family from North Allerton/Ainderby Steeple and couldn't find them prior to the 1881 Census.  I then found them in the 1871 Census (and before) under the surname SEERY !  They are definitely the same family - many matches on siblings' names and Dates of Birth.
Any ideas why this name change would have happened?  Is there any source I can get to which may record the name change? The SEERY name is from Ireland and the earliest member of this family is marked as born there in the 1841 Census; is there a gaelic to english possibilty here?
I am completely mystified - any ideas/comments/info would be greatly appreciated.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Tanzell
« on: Saturday 27 May 06 15:03 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find any of the family Tanzell - Reuben Tanzell born around 1850 to 1865 married to Elizabeth Alice, daughter Alice Maria DOB Q2 1885. They are conspicuously absent from any census I have looked at.  They were based, I believe, in the Bristol area, perhaps Bedminster.

Any help greatly appreciated.

« on: Saturday 27 May 06 14:57 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my half-brother Ieuan Bowden Wrigley (DOB 1933) who emigrated to New Zealand around 1960 with his wife Dosha. He was an airport fireman (Gatwick) in UK. I have no other information about him except he was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan.

Many thanks

Canada Lookup Request / "Capper Passes"
« on: Saturday 27 May 06 14:54 BST (UK)  »
Here is a very vague one: can anyone help with a company or organisation called "Capper Passes"? I have got  a very disjointed piece of info that a relative emigrated to Alberta Canada "before the second World War" under the auspices of "Caper Passes".  Has anyone ever heard of this?

Cheers

Is there a searchable database anywhere of World War One wounded - specifically those gassed and then invalided out of the army?

Many thanks

Occupation Interests / Chartered Accountant
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 16:27 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor - William Daniel Paul HARE - who describes himself as an Accountant or a Chartered Accountant. He lived  between c.1850 and c. 1890. Is there a searchable database somewhere that would list accountants at these times?

Many thanks
