The Common Room / Anyone got a John Allan, Spectacle Maker of London?
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 16:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone have a John Allan, spectacle maker in their family tree?  He was given the Freedom of London in 1898.  If anyone can prove their lineage to him, I have his framed Freedom, which has adorned my wall for over 20 years on the premise that it wouldn't have been sold at the Antique Fair if the family had wanted it.  But ... the older you get and the more you do your family tree you realise that not ALL the family always know where EVERYTHING is.  So, I'd really like to be able to reunite this piece of history with its roots.

Family History Beginners Board / Census Confusion - Can't read/understand a name!
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 17:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi, All

I'm new here, been researching my family tree for almost 30 years on and off (as you do!).

I have a census return for 1841 for one of my ancestors, family of DREW.  He is listed in the census as what looks like a capital J with an N attached (but it's not a capital n) and then a small o above the line of writing (like a temperature degree sign) and it's underlined with a dot (full stop) under it.

I have always taken this to be Jonathan and in future census returns he's referred to as John.  Fine up to now - that is until day when I went to the family history centre to find his marriage record.  Hadn't a clue when to look but their first child was born in 1831 so I looked from 1827 onwards.

Found a Drew marrying in 1829 to an Elizabeth (as in the census), but he was Joseph not John.

Hubbie (who also traces his family history) said he would accept it was an error on the church's part but I'm not so sure.

He came from Ireland originally, and I wonder if he was RC and not allowed to marry in a CofE church and that's why I am having difficulty finding him.

That said, their first two children are baptised in the same church 2 and 4 years on.

What does everyone think?

Yvonne.

Ireland / JOHN DREW from Ireland

Hi, Everyone

I'm a newbie here.  Been researching my family tree on and off for about 30 years.

I'm looking for a John Drew - he is shown in the 1841 census as living in Tipton, England, he's 35 and born in Ireland.

When the new Irish records came online recently, I've waited patiently until the majority of them were online and searched each time for my John Drew 1805/6 and then Co Meath came online and I think I've found him.

http://meath.brsgenealogy.com/

I paid for to view the birth/baptism record and found a mother and father.  I don't want to pursue this moneywise until the other 4-5 counties are in and I'm sure it's him.  So I found a potential mother and father for him and have now looked at the marriages between Patrick Drew and Mary Walsh around 1794.

My question is - the Patrick who was married in 1794 was from Louth and the Mary Walsh who was married in 1794 was from Dublin.  They appear to be the only ones of that name marrrying around that sort of time but would their counties be the ones they married in or the ones they were from?

If this John Drew is mine and those are his parents, it would make sense if one was from Louth and one from Dublin and my John was born in Meath.  Perhaps it was equidistant from both of their homes!!??

If anyone has any ideas or information I'd be very grateful.

Thanks.

Yvonne.
