The Common Room / The passing of a much admired Rootschatter, Alex Liggins.
« on: Thursday 16 August 12 12:21 BST (UK)  »
To those who knew him, there are not enough words in any dictionary to describe who he was! It will leave a hole in the chat room and our hearts.

RIP Alex Liggins, a man of all men and a gentle one besides!

Condolences to all his family and friends...

London and Middlesex / A successful London tobacco/snuff manufacturer info needed!
« on: Tuesday 06 March 12 09:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm after some information for a business in London during 1811 - 1832. I've searched newspapers until I'm blue in the face, but the only references I found was a small ad for an apprentice in 1811 and another advert for Scotch Rapee (sp). The latest reference we have for the business is an 1832 insurance record.
Insurance records:
1817 - 1,000 pounds.
1818 - 1,500 pounds.
1828 - 1,300 pounds.
1832 - 1,200 pounds.
The name of the man who owned the business was James Christie and we assumed the name of the business was Christie's. He was a tobacco/snuff manufacturer. There are two addresses for it on the insurance records, two for 42 Brewer Street and 2 for 43 Brewer Street, Golden Square.
I have hit a brick wall as far as researching the family, but that's not the information I'm after (have some new leads that need to be investigated). I ONLY want information about the actual business. If anyone that lives in the local area could possibly help out or point me in the right direction, I'd be willing to reimburse for any costs incurred of copying documents etc.
The conversion rate for the insurance amounts is actually phenomenal and I find it surprising that there isn't much information for such a successful business (And it doesn't help with Christie's Auction house in every search too!)

Thanks in advance if anyone can assist me with this information.

The link will take you to the shows page and a link to facebook where about 450 photos have been posted that they're trying to get identified! Some of the photo's don't look like they're just Australian diggers, so check them out and spread the word everyone! Fantastic find!

Thanks in advance,

The Common Room / Some photos from Corowa area
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 03:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I won't post the photos (black and white only), but while going through my fathers album, i've come across photo's of others who aren't related, and as far as I know they were taken around the Corowa area, in Victoria, Australia.

Two of the photo's are of a male and female, who used to do the 'daredevil' motorbike riding in the 'cage'. She has what looks like black with white writing and a skull and cross bones on her top with Death Divers written on it, he has 'High Rider' written on his top. One photo is just her, second photo is both of them.
Also have a Bennetts family, with 7 kids by the looks of it (have other photos of two of the daughters).
A Mrs Ferguson, several of her and her sons, some with horses.
An F Buckingham, F Johnstone, M Wilson, two sisters with the surname Harrop, K Gollings, and one gorgeous photo of a P Gollings.
The photos are dated mid 1950's to 1960.

If anyone thinks they may be related to anyone listed, let me know.
