The Common Room / John Summers Russell

Not sure if I have posted this in the correct area, but it was the only way I could see to make a post.

I am trying to find out where my brother John Summers Russell was buried, he was born in 1940 at the Glasgow Maternity Hospital and died two weeks later.  My parents came from Dumbarton and I have checked local records in Dumbarton without any success.

I don't think they would have crematoria in those days.  I would like to find the grave and lay some flowers.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Wonder if anyone can help me.  I've been trying to trace my wife's family tree and we appear to have failed at the first hurdle.  We are trying to find details of her mother, Agnes Burns ms Tait.  We have two documents, her marriage certificate and her death certificate.  From her marriage certificate we have her parents names as George Tait and Robina Tait ms Robertson and her age as 25.   She has told the family that her birthday was 15th Sept 1915 and that she was born in Berwick Upon Tweed but moved to Oxton in Scottish Borders to live with her granny as both her parents had died.

I registered the death and the information would be from her marriage certificate and the dob from my mother in law herself.   This would seem straight forward, but when I tried to order a copy of the birth certificate from the GRO, I received an email back telling me they could not locate any birth with the details I have supplied.  I have also tried the General Registrar for Scotland just in case it was Berwickshire she was born, but still can find no trace.
Couple of questions:
1.   Is it possible that her birth was never registered ?
2.   It is normal for a birth certificate to be produced before a marriage, but during wartime would they relax the rules ?
I have also posted this on the Northumbria Board.
Any answers or ideas would be appreciated.

Dunbartonshire / Neil McLean - Portugal

I am trying to fill in some holes in our family history.  My great uncle Neil Mclean, born in Knapdale, moved to Barrow in Furness married to Janet Dickie. In the 1860's he moved to Portugal with his wife and then eventually came back to Scotland and settled in Dumbarton.

My question is "why would a person go to Portugal in the 1860s?"  We know 3 of his children were born there.  I would think that it would have been a very big commitment and obviously it had to be financially worthwhile.  We know he was a shipwright/blacksmith and assume that he worked in shipbuilding in Barrow, but it seems strange that he would go to another country to work in that industry when Britain was probably a world leader and there would be so much work here.

I have some vague idea about railways, but I don't know where it came from.

I  would appreciate to hear any suggestions.

I am after some help.  I am looking to find a birth certificate for Agnes Douglas Tait born on 15th September 1915 we believe she was born in Berwick Upon Tweed  Mother was Robina Robertson and father was George Tait (fisherman).  This is my mother in law and we have  marriage and death certificates but can find no trace of any birth.  We have been told that her parents died when she was very young and was brought up by her grandmother in Oxton in the Scottish Borders.   I have tried BMD and can find nothing, I have also tried Scotlands People just in case she was born on the Scottish side of the border, but no joy.
I have run into a brick wall and would appreciate any advice or direction that could be offered.

Regards

Neil

Hi,

I am trying to find out a reason why Neil McLean, a great uncle would move to Portugal. He was born in Knapdale in 1833, got married in Barrow in Furness in 1861, then moved to Portugal with his wife.  While they were in Portugal they had 3 children ( born 1864,1865 and 1867) before moving to Dumbarton.  I believe he was a blacksmith to trade.
It seems a strange location to go to.  I would like to try to fathom his reasons.  Would be grateful for any suggestions.

Neil
