Midlothian / Where could he be? Mackay
« on: Thursday 30 December 21 16:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I'm driving myself nuts looking for Alexander Mackay. The only info I have is his listing on his son's death cert. His son is also Alexander.

It states he is deceased on his son's death cert in 1889 . His wife is still alive and her name is Mary née Gibson. I can't find a death or marriage for him anywhere. Also no luck with passenger lists etc. Any idea where else I could look? The family were all edinburgh portobello areas.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / When and why please?
« on: Saturday 18 May 19 19:45 BST (UK)  »
Evening,

Regarding the attached photos, I was wondering if anyone had an idea of dates and also perhaps why photos like this would be taken - just because, or perhaps an occasion?

First photo of family - 2 parents and 5 children. Father seated left born 1840, youngest daughter front left born 1878, oldest son seated right born 1868. I was thinking the photo might be about 1888 ish??

Second photo is the aged mother from the first photo. She was born in 1844. She died in 1927.

Any ideas?

Thanks
James

England / Advice with English records
« on: Friday 18 August 17 19:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I have undertaken extensive research into my family whom have all been from Scotland. I have found Scotland's People an excellent and easy resource.
One of my ancestors has now brought me to searching English records and I'm struggling to find any detail on ancestry. His name is James Milne Robertson and was born in 1908 in Dundee. He seems to have moved to England and I can only assume it had something to do with his work. He graduated as a dentist in 1926 and I see he is in Evesham in 1939. Can anyone recommend how to find more about him? I can't find a marriage, death, children or anything else.

Thanks ;D

Worcestershire / What was in Evesham?
« on: Monday 14 August 17 20:52 BST (UK)  »
Evening

I have noticed that my grandad appears as a witness on the marriage cert of what would have been his cousin. The puzzling thing is that his address is listed on the marriage certificate as 91 High Street Evesham. This was in 1938. My Dad has no knowledge of his dad ever living down there. He spent his whole life in Scotland then New Zealand. Could anybody suggest what might have been at this address in Evesham?

Would anybody be able to show me where the address lower crofts is on a current map? It is in a 1901 census and the next door house is listed as the woolmill. I visited the woolmill last year but couldn't find anything that might have been lower crofts.

Scotland / Middle names
« on: Thursday 26 February 15 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I know there used to be a semi tradition used in scotland regarding naming children but I've come across what I find to be quite a strange one.

John Robertson and his wife Mary Robertson (Robertson) had a son which they called John Lowden Robertson. I thought the middle name was interesting but couldn't figure out the link. Looking into the family more,  john (the dad) had a brother who was married to an Ann Lowden . So essentially John Lowden Robertson was given the maiden name of his Aunty as a middle name???? Strange no??

Angus (Forfarshire) / Monifieth Schools
« on: Tuesday 24 February 15 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Im looking for more info about a husband and wife that both appear to have been school teachers. I'm trying to figure out which school they may have taught in, with the hope that the school may have old records. They were married in 1938 and both died in the 90s. The wife, on her wedding certificate is listed as living at Panmurefield House in Monifieth, as was her single female witness. I know the current Monifieth High is in Panmurefield but it was founded in the 70s. Was there an old school on the same site and could it have been possible that this lady and her female witness could have been living in some kind of school house, perhaps used to house single female teachers????
The names of the two people are John Lowden Robertson and Elizabeth Kidd (obv became Robertson). John is listed as living at Barnhill on the wedding cert so he may well have been in the same school given its proximity to Monifieth.

On a standard wedding cert, Column 6 talks about a regular or irregular marriage. What does that mean?
