Australia / BRAITHWAITE John Serjeantson - Arrival in Australia
« on: Thursday 05 July 12 14:55 BST (UK)  »
John Serjeantson BRAITHWAITE was born 15 Oct 1864 in Rock Ferry, Cheshire, England.  Son of John Henry BRAITHWAITE.
I would like to know if there is some way of knowing when and where he arrived in Australia.  First record I have of him is marriage to Phoebe Josephine BAKER (daughter of Samuel BAKER)  in Southern Cross, West Australia on 22 July 1894.
He was still there on 31 January, 1902, when my Grandmother was born at Murrin Murrin, West Australia.

He then moved to Tasmania at some stage, then on to South Yarra in Melbourne, but I am not sure where to look to confirm all this.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter Mitchell

I am trying to find a record of the death or other information on  Samuel MITCHELL who lived in Collingwood / Northcote (Melbourne) area. He had a son born Collingwood in 1864, his wife died in Collingwood in 1881. He was a plasterer by occupation.  He came to Geelong from England in 1855.  Wife's name was Fanny (nee THOMPSON.  They were both born in London in 1830/1832 and married in London in 1852.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating this photo

Is there a chance that someone could put a rough date on this photo.  It has a name on the back,
but if the name is right, I would expect it to have been taken about 1850-1860, but it looks to modern to me.  It was taken at "Austral Studios" Hamilton & Casterton, Victoria Australia.

Many thanks,

Family History Beginners Board / forum posts
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 14:50 BST (UK)  »
when I post on any of the boards, only 3 of my surname interests appear on the end of the post, even though I have 6 surnames entered.  I notice some other people posting seem to have up to 10 or 12 listed.  Why would this be?

Australia / MATTHEWS Mary Ann and Nathaniel Charles
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 14:17 BST (UK)  »
Nathaniel Charles MATTHEWS husband of Mary Ann MATTHEWS (nee POTTER)
I have a death certificate for Mary Ann MATTHEWS 4/5/1914 in Northcote age 75, Melbourne, but cannot find any record of her husband's death at Victorian BDM.
If he was still alive when she died he would have been 79, but I suspect he would have predeceased her.
Is it possible for him to have died in Victoria, and no death certificate made?
What would be reasons I cannot find one for him?

Armed Forces / Crimean Medal, Turkish War Medal & Indian Mutiny Medal
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 15:04 BST (UK)  »
I have a relative in a photo with 3 medals pinned on him. I also have the actual medals that are in the photo, and they are the Crimean Medal, Turkish War Medal & Indian Mutiny Medal.  Is it possible to find out if the medals were actually awarded to him ?  I have shipping records Plymouth to Melbourne, Australia in 1871 occupation:Carver, with his name Nathaniel MATTHEWS age 37 (ie born 1834) and a marriage certificate for his daughter listing him as Nathaniel Charles MATTHEWS, occupation:Groom.

Many thanks

Occupation Interests / Carver
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 14:40 BST (UK)  »
I have a shipping record from Plymouth to Melbourne Australia in 1871 where a 37 year old male has listed occupation as "Carver".
I have a photo of him in a suit with 3 medals on waistcoat, and I have the actual medals - The crimea medal, Turkish war medal and Indian Mutiny medal, so I assume at some time he was in the army.
On his daughter's marriage certificate he has listed his occupation as "groom".
I assume a "groom" looked after horses, but what would a "carver" be doing (in 1871)?

Many thanks,
