Armed Forces / Northamptonshire Regiment
« on: Friday 19 April 19 22:45 BST (UK)  »
Am not sure where to post this so hopefully it will be moved to the appropriate place if needed ..thanks in advance :)
It concerns my paternal great grandfather. Charles Deacon born around 1854 in Northampton. (He cant decide if it was 1853, 1854 or 1855 from census, nor whether it was St Giles or St Andrews)
Anyway he married Margaret Mercy Redshaw in South Africa, in 1883. They came back to this country. He was already in the army with Northamptonshire regiment at that time as a Sargeant 2nd Northamptonshire ..the m/c shows. Think he joined in 1873.
They are in Aldershot in 1891 and move to Chatham Military road in time for 1901 census and stay there till he died in Sept 1911. He was by then a Staff Quartermaster?
What I am not sure of is what is his role?
Would there be anywhere that would have his records and thus his date of birth?
What is the actual regiment?? he is with..are there any records to show what he would have been doing during his time from 1873 to his death in service in 1911.
Why would he have been in South Africa around 1883? (interestingly one of his sons was named Theophilus Shepstone..and I do know that was the name of the 'statesman' of the area he was in at the time
Where can I go to find any of this?
Thanks very much

Northamptonshire / Charles Deacon or Charles Alfred deacon
« on: Friday 24 November 17 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
Sometime ago I asked for help with the daughter of this person and got some very helpful info. I was unable though to come back with a m/c for her parents and was at a loss as to why I could not find anything. Anyway, I thought sometime later lets try again and remembered a scrap piece of paper that I had scribbled on many many many years ago from notes given me by my Mum before she died and which was the thing that started me on this   ... the word diamond and South Africa were scrawled in the bottom right hand corner and I couldn't recall what Mum had said other than Diamond mine, large diamond in Treasury! Images come to mind of lottery wins and a jackpot!  ;D Anyway with those silly thoughts I decided I must solve this puzzle. So unusually I scrawled through the Public family trees on Ancestry. Imagine my surprise when I found someone with the same name as my GGM who had a similar tree and details. I wrote to her and got a reply and found my third cousin...in Africa! I was then able to find my missing piece of this puzzle a m/c which she kindly sent me a copy.
Now onto my query...with this I then knew Charles Deacon had married Margaret Redshaw and were the parents of my GM, Margaret Mercy Deacon. I also knew that Charles was definitely a soldier and census data found here was thus correct.
However, I have since found another tree which follows mine but the person has a different Charles, a Charles Alfred Deacon. His DOB was similar and on checking the Northampton registers I find two Charles

Charles Deacon born abt 1855, baptised 12 April 1855 parents William and ELIZABETH (who may have maiden name Walker) but no actual date of birth. Parish St Edmund

Charles Alfred deacon born 11 June 1853 and bap July 1853. Parish St Giles.

Charles (the first one shows up in several census with varying years of birth ranging from 1853 to 1855 and on his discharge papers leads us to believe he was born in 1853. Also varying parishes St Giles/St Edmunds and St Andrews) His parents seem to have passed on early and he and a possible brother John end up in Union Workhouse at age 6 (father was a soldier)
The second Charles -  Charles Alfred looks as though he may have died in the same year in October and the address is similar and if it is him he did indeed have a brother called William who also died a week before). His parent however are Frederick and Martha.

Can anyone help me feel reassured that the first Charles is the right one for my line and that the second one with whom there appears to be an infant death is likely to be the second Charles - Charles Alfred and in fact died therefore the wrong Charles for my line..

I hope I managed to make sense of this???
If so it means I can now proceed with searching for William and Ann with the details I have so far and thus onto their parents:)
If I am wrong I would rather know and not make assumptions and get back on track :) :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering a copy of a 'will'
« on: Thursday 13 July 17 12:01 BST (UK)  »
In trying to find  and confirm ancestors I have used the 'wills' results in Scotland's People  ie name of ancestor hopefully year of death and seeing who is included as a way of confirming the right person. However, a couple of wills I have found which seem to be the right person as so difficult to read, I can make out a few words but the copy is bad making it more difficult to 'read'... is there anywhere that I can send it to for deciphering and any idea of costs involved?
I should add this is back to 1665 :)
Thank you

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Palfreyman
« on: Tuesday 17 January 17 15:53 GMT (UK)  »
Palfreymans are great..so many spellings!
So am needing help. Not due just to spelling though!
I have a George Palfreyman (spelt on his marriage cert as that) but on Ancestry as Palfreeman. He married a Mary Pratt in 1850..who later married a Christopher Kemp.
Now George is the problem. We think he might belong to a family where his father James (on Marr cert shows as farmer) and is married to a Sarah. But..which Sarah. I can find a son of James and Sarah....but no surname. There is a James (we think born 1776) and Sarah (we think born 1780) who had several children in Long Marston but all state Plumer as her surname. There is a  James and Sarah (no surname who have three children William, Ann and George I can find on census but still no surname for Sarah and as no other children mentioned cannot confirm if this family is same as James and Sarah Plummer.
We think it might be possible that one of Sarah P and James daughters could have had a child and maybe they took it on as their own. George is born  quite late for this family we have a possible date (from marr cert as 1826. hes in Stockton on forest at this point) as Mary remarried assuming its our George is right one...we think this George may have died youngish and a date of 1855 for that.
This is my George and we are trying to establish if he belongs to this family or a whole different one!
Does that make sense ??
I checked Ancestry for Sarah born in Long Marston around 1780 ten years either side and managed to find most Sarah's married to someone else..some we couldn't find any further record as too little to decide which one might be which.
Have searched for James in similar way and also George..there are a couple of others George 1830 who we don't think is ours as born in Goldsborough and another in 1826 who we think dies in 1876 and if only the one died as result of his work as a miner.
It' ;Ds the marr cert that gives us the basis of George and his father but not enough at present to find them both and Mum Sarah... and confirm siblings
Can anyone help please?  ;D :)

THANK YOU!!

Can anyone tell me if I find an entry for someone in Yorkshire Parish records will the detail I see there (having seen it via Ancestry) be all that's available or are there details in addition to that shown?

I am trying to find Thomas Redshaw birth which is thought to be around 1786, not sure where but he married and lived in Kilham, married Margaret Bessy Frost in 1804.

My new found cousins from South Africa are trying to establish the details for Thomas and whether he had any siblings...

Can anyone help with the first question and where else we might try to find details for Thomas. We found one record but its for a Thomas being baptised in Armley, Leeds which seems too far away for it to be the same person.

Thanks very much!! :)

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Mary Wrigglesworth
« on: Tuesday 14 July 15 22:12 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching through Ancestry and Family Search as well as the FreeBDM to find Maria, Mary and William Wrigglesworth mother and grandmother. After being helped with the children and finding they are illegitimate thought I would still try to find records of Mum and her parents. But have found it meets a blank... there are so many Mary's

Details are as follows if anyone can throw any light or leads for me to follow ..

William b 1802
Mary b 1827
Mercy b 1823

There is possibly two other children a Harriet and George

Mary is about 1775.
Have always found it puzzling that William is 20 years older than sisters

Mary (1175) could still be a Wrigglesworth or whatever spelling  ..have seen Riggelsworth/Riggelsworth/Wregglesworth/Wrigelsworth

After years of wondering what happened with Mercy who married a William Redshaw and they seemed to disappear I was lucky enough top be searching on Ancestry and noticed someone with her name in the tree but it was private so I wrote to the person and finally after many years found the whole lot had moved to South Africa. It seems many Yorkshire farm labourers moved there with financial help under the Burns scheme where they were given land and money to get them started. This is a bit of an aside but just shows anyone searching that your family could have gone off somewhere far away! :)

Anyhow any help with what to try next would be grateful thank you!

Ross & Cromarty / Isabella Rofs/Ross? where did she come from?
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 12:25 BST (UK)  »
I am finally retired and can now spend time on my tree....and am picking up where I left off some while back where in fact I gave up!! What an admittance!  :)

I have had such difficulty trying to find this lady who is my GGmother and having moved to Scotland and finding out that both  my mothers parents came from here.

I so want to find my GGmother and intend to visit Invergordon which is where my mother said she came from. Apparently she moved down from there to York, speaking only Gaelic, and worked at the Royal York Station hotel when she met my GGfather Henry William Palfreeman.

They married 27 Dec 1876 and she was 24 years old he was 25.

Her father is called Peter Rofs and was a tailor, and am then wanting to try and find him and his relatives...

I previously searched and found details of several but this time round I cannot seem to find anything close, there are so many Isabellas or variations. I have no address for her or parents, I do not know Mum's name.

Her signature on the MC isnt Rofs but looks like Roso ??  ::)

Can anyone give me any leads please??

Thank you!  :) :)

would it help giving you the names of their children as  think most named after their parents/brothers/sisters etc...  Hephzibah Pool, Margaret A, Isabel, Jessie, John, Lily, Sophie B, James Ross, George Henry, Francis Ross, ( me Mum said they had 13 but only found 10)
