World War Two / Sgt. John Stanley Powell, RAF
« on: Saturday 14 January 12 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with any details of the crash of a Beufighter piloted by Sgt. John Stanley Powell on the 22nd July 1943 at or near Carlisle.
The family passed this info onto me but it doesn't say how he actually crashed and  I know that he died the following day from burns.
" His plane was on fire and he flew inland so that his navigator, Ken Weatherburn from Huddersfield Yorkshire, could bale out, he then flew back towards the sea to avoid civilian casualties."

I have read elsewhere that he crashed on landing and that his navigator Weatherman was killed although there are no deaths recorded for Weatherburn or Weatherman by the CWGC in 1943 and I suspect that the family are correct in that he baled out.
Any help in getting the facts or names straight would be much appreciated.

Ronald Tasker, Warrant Officer, RAFVR, died 3rd August 1946 and buried in the Helipolis War Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt.
A family member tells me that he died during a terrorist attack on his base.
Anyone have any information about the death of this man that I can forward to his family?

World War One / Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service
« on: Friday 30 September 11 19:39 BST (UK)  »
I have come across the name of a nurse who was one of two killed on HMHS Drina on the 30th December 1915.
She was Nursing Sister Caroline Maud Edwards although I know that the Drina now a Royal Mail ship was sunk in 1917.
Has anybody any information as to how this and the other lady died or the other ladies name?

Armed Forces / Harry Howlett
« on: Thursday 21 July 11 14:40 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help here about how this gentleman died?
I found a memorial to a Walter Howlett killed in WW1 and it also commerates Harry Howlett of the SWB who died on 14th May 1933.
The heading is "Roll of Honour" and the text says "They gave their lives so others might live".
This implies that both men died in action but the SWB museum have no records of anything untoward happening in 1933 and are unable to help any further although I have now asked them if they have any record of Harry Howlett.

I have her obituary and it says that she died in the Military Hospital,  Mexborough, Yorks.
Maybe she was another victim of the flu outbreak at this time.
