Stirlingshire / Robert Duncan- St Ninians
« on: Thursday 13 June 24 18:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Feel like I am going slightly insane trying to figure this out! So where the hell to begin! My ancestor, Robert Duncan and his (supposed, found no marriage record!) wife Christian Wordie had six children together between 1686 and 1699, John, Margaret, Christian jnr, Janet, Thomas and (another) Christian jnr.

Robert is recorded on Christian Wordie or Duncan's Warrant of Testament and Will dated from 1735 (suggesting Christian died shortly before). Robert I suspect died around 1726/27. Certainly their is references to him as a Portioner in Cairnock, St Ninians as well as being a Capper there.

Now this is where it gets even more confusing! Robert Duncan married Margaret Din in 1688 Fintry, Stirlingshire and had six children together between 1688 and 1706, Janet, Andrew, James, Jean, Mary and Christian.

Can we assume that both Robert Duncan's are the same man? I can't imagine him being a bigamist in such a rural area as this and Christian was definetely alive when he was having children with Margaret Din! Unfortunately attaching digital facsimiles is too large for this server. However Robert seems to have a Will for 1727 and Christian 1734.

Therefore, can anyone help me figure this out?!

Thanks in advance!

Perthshire / James Chalmers- Boglea and Balhary
« on: Friday 05 April 24 16:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am hoping descendants of James Chalmers Esq. are somewhere out there! I have recently found an article regarding James Chalmers marriage to Miss Whyte of Kennoway, Fife in 1882. Within the article it states that his servants, numbering over thirty were entertained to supper and my 2 x great grandfather, Peter Ferrier, the farm grieve at Boglea Farm occupied the chair. I wonder if anyone out there (related or not) might know of or have a copy of a photograph from the event? It would be wonderful to see what my ancestor looked like, however I understand wedding photos etc weren't as common place as they are now! Perhaps being a fairly large event,  a group photograph was taken.

Thanks in advance!

Darren

Angus (Forfarshire) / Adoption prior 1930
« on: Monday 26 June 23 21:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

This is a little bit of a vague question, I'm afraid.. but don't have much to go on here, so bear with me!

A friend of mine has stated that she believes her grandmother had been adopted and that her grandmother had been born in Malta (but even granny wasn't certain of her exact birthplace!). She had been raised in Dundee and had been born in 1927. Apart from Ancestry dna etc kits. Can anyone signpost her to key sources that may establish if her grandmother was born in Malta and had been adopted by Scottish adoptive parents?

Thanks

Darren

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Uncertain word
« on: Tuesday 20 June 23 19:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I recently found that my ancestor was a Heckler (Flax related occupation) in Inverness in 1787. However there is a word I am unfamiliar with in the same entry as his son's baptism entry. He is described as a Heckler in the filidale...I have no idea what a filidale is or where this may be. Google has drawn a blank!

His name was Murdoch McLeod, his son being Roderick. Unfortunately I can't attach a file, as it too large!

Hi all,

Would anyone happen to know who the chief landowners that included Balquhidder were during the 18th and early 19th Centuries?

The Common Room / James Henderson-Writer to Signet
« on: Friday 02 June 23 07:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Little help needed! My ancestor, Elizabeth Cleland (Henderson) death cert states that her father is a Writer or Solicitor in Scotland. She died in 1898 Dennistoun, Glasgow. With the risk of sounding snobbish, her husband was a working class Labourer and Private in the 79th Regiment of Foot. Therefore her father being a Writer seems a little odd! I can find no death record or census record of him anywhere! Elizabeth was born ar0und 1833 in Stirling, therefore suspect he was from that area as well.

Armed Forces / 1st NB Militia records
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 22:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have recently discovered that my ancestor was a Private in the 1st NB (presumably New Brunswick) Militia (obtained this from his marriage entry in 1799 in Inveresk, Haddingtonshire, Scotland).

I am struggling to find archival sources that could potentially have recorded information regarding him and his service with the regiment.

Could someone point me in the right direction?! 😏

Lanarkshire / 1921 Census- Coal Contractor
« on: Friday 02 December 22 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

Quick query! I have discovered my ancestor, James Gillies is described as a Coal Contractor in the 1921 Census living in Shettleston. I have noticed he has been recorded as a Coal Miner in other records e.g. birth certs of his children, marriage certificate and his death certificate, but never a Coal Contractor.

Does anyone know what this entailed? Was this a haulage role with A & G Anderson, Coal Masters?

Thanks

Darren
