Canada / Did this MacLennan family go to York, Ontario? - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 25 February 11 18:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've been lost for years with this family that suddenly dissappears from Scotland. Everything is more or less OK until the parents die and the children vanish.

Farquhar MacLennan and Catherine McGregor were the parents, living in Kinlochewe Heights, Gairloch (1841-1851-1861).

1851 Census:

Farquhar 60 Head
Catherine 40 Wife
Ann 22 Daur
John 17 Son
Roderick 10 Son
Catherine 7 Daur
Barbara 5 Daur
Mary 1 Daur

1861 Census:

Kate 50 Head
Ann 30 Daur
Roderick 20 Son
Catherine 17 Daur
Isabella 15 Daur
Murdoch 10 Son
? 8 Son

Mother Catherine died in December 1863.

Three clues make me believe the children could have emigrated to Ontario.

First of all, I've searched all Scotland, England and Australia with no results.

Second, quite weak but still something: a cousin of this family emigrated to York and when his first child was born (1871) the informant was a Roderick MacLennan.

Third, I recently discovered that a Geo McDonnel married an Ann MacLennan (age 52) 29 NOV 1888 in Parkdale, York, Ontario. Ann's parents were Farquhar MacLennan and Catherine McGregor.

I'd appreciate any information about any of the children that could give further proof that they did emigrate to Canada.

Thanks, cheers,
Francisco

Ross & Cromarty / Strathbran and Strathconon
« on: Friday 17 December 10 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

In the 1800's, to what parishes did Strathbran and Strathconon belong (Contin, Lochcarron)?

Also, would "Knockbain of Strathbrain" be another name for, or a part of, Strathbran?

Thanks,
Francisco

Ross & Cromarty / Help with 1851 census
« on: Tuesday 23 November 10 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find the following family in 1851. This is them in the 1841 census, at Lochined, Lochbroom:

Alexander MacLennan 40 Agricultural labourer
Mary MacLennan 25 (m.s. MacKenzie)
Christian MacLennan 12
Kathrin MacLennan 8
Johana MacLennan 9 months

I know of the following children born between 1841 and 1851:

Isabella b. 1843
Annabella b. 1845
Roderick b. 1846

In 1851 they are possibly back in Gairloch, as that's where Roderick was born.

Thanks,
Francisco

Australia / Sentenced to be transported - 1852
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 15:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can find some record of Angus McLean, who was sentenced to be transported for 7 years in April 1852. I'm trying to find out if the sentenced Angus is the same one that I have in my tree and that dissappeared from Scotland around that time (I do have him again in Scotland later on).

Thanks,
Francisco

Scotland / Sentenced to be transported
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 18:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a relative that was charged with theft in Gairloch and sentenced to be transported for 7 years. Would that mean he was sent to Australia or it could have been somewhere else? The year was 1852.

Thanks,
Francisco

Scotland / Gaelic nicknames?
« on: Friday 30 July 10 21:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a hand-written letter with names of some of my ancestors followed by what I assume are their nicknames in Gaelic. Can someone give me the translation of these, so I might identify who is who:

Farquhar (Buie)
Farquhar (Oag)
Murdo (Meen)
Murdo (Gow)

And I might as well ask for the translation of another phrase in that letter:

"tuige sibh fhein carson tha an danns so" (its something the father said at the wedding party of his daughter).

Thanks,
Francisco

Armed Forces / Sudan veteran
« on: Tuesday 06 July 10 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to fill in the last missing gap in the life of Alexander MacLennan (brother of my grandfather), a well known character in Patagonia, where he was known as the Red Pig.

I have unconfirmed information that he was an "ex-soldier and Sudan veteran" before moving to Patagonia. This would apply to sometime between 1891 (he was still in Scotland for the census) and 1896 (he had arrived in Patagonia).

Where could I look for some official record of him as a soldier and in Sudan.

Thanks for any guidance,
Francisco

Ross & Cromarty / MI or 1841 census for Mary (MacLennan) Fraser, Edderton
« on: Thursday 27 May 10 20:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for any information about this Mary MacLennan. All I have comes from a family paper:

Mary MacLennan (d. 1849) m. Jas Fraser (Edderton).

I know she must have been born in Gairloch (probably Heights of Kinlochewe), sometime between 1806 and 1809. Parents: Kenneth MacLennan and Elizabeth MacKenzie. She wasn't with her parents in 1841, so probably had already married.

Information about Jas Fraser (of whom I know nothing more) could also be useful to track down the family.

Thanks,
Francisco

Australia / Did this McGREGOR family emigrate to Australia?
« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 14:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have the following family living in Applecross, Scotland, in the 1841 census:

Alexander McGregor 40
Ann (McLennan) 30 (born 23 Jun 1807 in Gairloch)
Roderick 10 (born 3 Mar 1830)
Mary 7 (born 13 Apr 1832)
Alexander 5 (born 16 Mar 1837)
Christian 3 (born 17 Nov 1839)

I cannot find them anywhere in Scotland after the 1841 census, so I assume they emigrated. Australia is a possibility, because I know that some of Ann McLennan's brothers and nephews went there from 1839 onward.

I am especially interested in a possible death for Ann (McLennan) McGregor, to see if her parents are Farquhar McLennan and Christine McGregor.

Thanks for any help,

Francisco
