Armed Forces / Naval Forces 1797, Landsman pay book
« on: Monday 06 October 08 22:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have recently discovered that my ancestor George Mowden could possibly have been a 'Landsman' on the HMS Cumberland in 1797, if I have read it right. These are the details:

George Mowden; Ship's name: HMS Cumberland; Pay book number: SB 899; Rank: Landsman; Relation: Wife Ann; When Alloted: 1797; Remarks: Discharged 23 May 1798 to HMS Formidable.
Ref: Adm 27/1/239

Does anyone know where to look for further information about George Mowden's life at sea? Would records from the two ships mentioned (Log books etc) be in an archive somewhere, or even pay book records? I have no experience with naval ancestors!

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Blidworth colliery - 1854??
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 17:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am making an attempt at finding an ancestor John Hayes or Hays who could have been born in Blidworth about 1819. These are the places he may have been at during his life:

1841 Newstead Priory, 20, male servant
1843 Kirkby in Ashfield marrying Ellen Walker
1844 His son George born in Pinxton Derbyshire
1848 His wife Ellen dies in Riddings Alfreton Derbyshire.
1854 He dies in Blidworth, death certificate gives Collier as occupation, having previously been 'labourer'.

My question is; Does anyone know if there was a coalmine in Blidworth at that time (1854)? If not, where would the nearby coalmines be at that time?

Thanks in anticipation,

Hello,

Could someone please look up the marriage of Thomas Reynolds and Susan(nah) Elizabeth Arnold, 9 May 1830 at St Nicholas Deptford? Can find no trace of their births on IGI and hoping the marriage entry will reveal more. Thomas Reynolds was born abt. 1809 at Chatham Kent and Susannah Arnold gave Greenwich as place of birth, abt. 1811, this according to census.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / LMA Marriage look-up; St Dunstan's 1793
« on: Wednesday 10 September 08 14:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm hoping some kind soul going to London Metropolitan Archives could look up a marriage for me..  :)

The marriage in question is between John James Guenin and Sarah Lezome on the 22 Sep 1793 at St Dunstan's Stepney (details from IGI). I have been searching for 'Sarah Lezome' for a while and can find no reference to her surname anywhere. I hope to find out who she was, perhaps her name is written differently in the church records? Or (keeping my fingers crossed) maybe her father is mentioned??
I would really appreciate it as going myself isn't an option at the moment.

Many thanks!

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Chelsea/Fulham parish records???
« on: Tuesday 18 December 07 11:36 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I can look for marriages in Chelsea, Fulham and Kensington areas around 1810? I have a couple who were probably married in one of these areas around this time and I have found nothing on IGI.  :-\
The couple in question is:
Stephen Francis Anderson and Johanna (or Joanna). I have found Stephen and family in 1841 and 1851 but his wife Johanna died before 1833.

Stephen's birth is on IGI, he's the son of Robert and Mary Anderson, b. 1 Jan 1793, chr. St Anne, Soho 28 Jan 1793. I'm trying to get further back and have met a brick wall! Can anyone help please?

US Lookup Requests / US census: Nels Olson, Wilkin, Minnesota
« on: Thursday 15 November 07 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have recently discovered that some of my Norwegian ancestors emigrated to Minnesota in 1875 and would now love to find out more, especially from the US census. Their Norwegian names were:

Nils Kristian Olsen (Nels Olson) b. 1844 Norway, d. 1933 Mccauleyville, Wilkin
wife Karen Antonette Agersborg Kristensdatter (Carrie Olson or Karen Agersborg), b. 1847 Norway, d. 1937 Mccauleyville, Wilkin
Berger Konrad Olsen (Conrad Olson), b. 1869 Norway
Oluf Elias Olsen b. 1871?, Norway (no trace of him after emigration)
Martin N. Olsen b. 1876, Minnesota? d. 1904 Canada (IGI. Why Canada?)
Hans Olson b. 1878, Montevideo, Chippewa, Minnesota, d. 1936 Mccauleyville
Baldwin Nels Olson, b. 1880, Ada, Norman, Minnesota, d. 1969 Mccauleyville

Most of this info is from IGI, but I have also located them on the US census (1900 and 1910) in Wilkin, Minnesota, but can't view the details. Would love to find descendants of this family. Could someone please look them up?  :)

Kind regards,

London and Middlesex / Divorce "in forma pauperis", 1881 London
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

A while ago I discovered some ancestors who divorced in forma pauperis in 1880 (in forma pauperis: "When a person is so poor that he cannot bear the charges of suing at law or in equity, upon making oath that he is not worth five pounds and bringing a certificate from a counselor at law that he believes him to have a just cause, he is permitted to sue informa pauperis, in the manner of a pauper; that is, he is allowed to have original writs and subpoenas gratis and counsel assigned him without fee")

My question is, what would be the norm regarding the wife's surname in those days; - would she keep his or would she take her maiden name back? The petitioner was the husband, maybe that would make a difference as to which name she would use after the divorce? The reason for asking is that I can't find the (ex-)wife after the divorce in any census, nor a registration of her death. She could of course have remarried, but I can't see that happening so soon after the divorce, the final decree being 15 Feb 1881. I would expect to find her in the 1881 census, but no luck! Does anyone have any information regarding divorces in those days?  ???
