The Common Room / Looking for a burial Surrey / Hampshire
« on: Tuesday 06 March 12 19:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, can any Rootschatters out there help me please?  My Great Grandfather died on 6th January 1904 in Grayswood in the district of Haslemere, Surrey.  He was born in 1872 under the name of Richard Henry Cowthard.  He then left the family and 'married' Elizabeth Matthews, daughter of Chorley (Charles) Matthews & Phoebe Matthews nee Deakins.  I assume that he did not want his family to find him as he changed his surname to Smith and his death certificate was registered under the name of Smith.

If anybody could find out where he is buried that would be brilliant as I have been looking for over a year now and have not come up with anything - I assume that as he died quite near to Hampshire he could be buried in a Hampshire church.

Any ideas to further my search or any help would be great.  Many thanks.   :D :D :D

Essex Lookup Requests / WILLIAM SEARLES born 1835 Great Leighs, Essex
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 19:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone out there be able to check the Parish Registers for Great Leighs for my GGG Grandfather, William Searles.  I have his parents listed as John Searles b1786 and Elizabeth Searles b1791 - he is listed with them on the 1841 census, however, it does not show whether these are his parents.  If the above is correct his mother would have been 44 when she gave birth to him.  If anyone could check the Registers either for birth or Baptism to see whether his parents are listed that would be great.  Many thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give.   :D

Essex Lookup Requests / Searles family of Essex
« on: Tuesday 21 June 11 21:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone help me with tracing my Searles ancestors in Essex.  My GGF is Frederick Searles who married Susannah Fanny Williams.  Frederick's parents were William Searles born c1835 in Great Leighs Essex, his mother was Mary Phillips Searles (nee Lee) born c1834 in Bishops Stortford.  I am trying to ascertain whether William's parents were John and Elizabeth Searles (John born c1786 & Elizabeth born c1791) - I am not sure whether these were the parents as Elizabeth would have been 44 when she had William - I cannot remember where I got the details of John & Elizabeth from so I am unable to recheck my source.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks Rootschatters. :D

The Common Room / COWTHARD
« on: Tuesday 18 May 10 13:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi I wonder if anyone can help me.  I believe that Richard Cowthard (born Erith/Deptford area c1872) is my great grandfather - if my research is correct I understand that Richard left the family to join a travelling family and changed his name to Richard Henry Smith. He had 2 children with Elizabeth Matthews named Richard and William (William is my grandfather) - Richard's birth certificate gives the name 'Cowthard' & William's gives the name 'Smith' - when they died they were both registered under the name 'Cothard' which was my maiden name. It would be great if I could make the link to the Cowthard family & if so, does anyone have any other information on this family? many thanks Lorraina. :)
