United States of America / Eliza Collyer born 1821 Philadelphia
« on: Tuesday 19 November 19 15:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, My 2x great grandmother Eliza Collyer was born in 1821 in Philadelphia, according to her baptism record in 1837 Melbourne, Derbyshire, England.
Her parents were Thomas Collyer ( a boot and shoe maker ) and Elizabeth Yearl. Thomas born in 1799, Elizabeth in about 1806, both were born in Melbourne, Derbyshire, England. ( from the census records ) but it seems they were in Philadelphia in 1821, when Eliza was born and on board ship back to England in 1823, when their son James was born.  (His baptism record.)
I am hoping someone can help me find the marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth. Were they married in Philadelphia, or were they married in England?
Maybe they were married on board ship to America.

Derbyshire / Age at christening
« on: Tuesday 30 July 13 20:09 BST (UK)  »
What would be an average age for a child to be christened. Is it at all possible, that a child born in 1796 might not be christened until 1802?

My 3x Great Grandmother, Rachel Waterhouse was born in Staveley in 1796. FamilySearch has a christening on March 7th, 1802 for Rachel Waterhouse, daughter of Edmund and Esther. This is the only one I found for Rachel. Edmund died on June 8th, 1801, would Rachel have been christened after her father's death?

Are Edmund and Esther, Rachel's parents?

Derbyshire / Tailor's shop in Chesterfield
« on: Wednesday 30 May 12 14:46 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information about a tailor's shop in Chesterfield.
I have a Vesta case with an advertisement on for a T Spencer, Tailor and Habit Maker, High Street, Chesterfield.
On the other side of the Vesta case is another picture which is very faded but we can just see a double fronted shop, which says T. Spencer & Co Military Tailors and Habit Makers. It looks like the shop number is 29. The picture on this side is too faded to photograph.
On the side of the case are the words Wedekind & Co London. Berlin.

The case has been in the family for a few years but we have no information about it, or the shop, and I was wondering if anyone else knows of this business, I am curious because it is part of my local history.

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / 1841 census look up Hannah Mullet
« on: Wednesday 05 October 11 10:56 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please look on the 1841 census for Hannah Mullet b 1827 in Dudley, Worcestershire.

I am interested to know if her parents where Samuel and Hannah, I looked on the IGI for her birth. There was an extracted record, but the parents were listed as Sarah and Hannah.
I know this must be a mistake but would like to know if Samuel and Hannah are the right parents.

Thank you cg.

Derbyshire / Sarah Ann who did she marry? Competed.
« on: Thursday 18 August 11 09:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find who Sarah Ann Platts married. She was born in 1849 in Chesterfield, her sister Mary Jane married in 1868 in Sheffield.

There are two marriages on FreeBMD that would seem to fit with her birth date, but on both there are two brides and only one bridegroom.
1868 Sheffield 9c 434, Sarah Ann Platts, Anne Parsons and Jonathan Sheldon, and 1873 Shardlow 7b 535, Sarah Ann Platts, Elizabeth Foster and George Pegg.

Who did she marry? Any help is much appreciated

The Common Room / I'm stuck with this family. Completed
« on: Friday 29 April 11 20:59 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure where to post this.

I have Ephraim Fullwood b 1829 Whitwick, Leicestershire, and his father Isaac b 1806 Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. On the census both lived in Derbyshire, first in Crich, then Chesterfield.

Isaac married Ann Castledine in 1828 in Whitwick.
The census say Ann was born 1811 in Whitwick, but I can't find any record.
I have been trying to find any siblings of Ephraim, without success. Did Ephraim have any siblings?

I think Isaac's parents were, Isaac and Mary Johnson who married in 1799 in Greasley Nottinghamshire, but after that I come to a stop. Where was this Isaac born? The only ones I find are in Sedgley Stafford. Could this be where he came from?

I can't seem to get anywhere with this family.  :(

The Common Room / Removals. Completed
« on: Wednesday 27 April 11 14:27 BST (UK)  »
I need some advice please. I have found a removal on Yesterdays Journey, which I think could be my ancestors William and Mary Siddall / Siddal.
The removal is from Staveley Derbyshire, to Kimberworth Yorkshire in 1788.

I have read that these removals were back to the place they were last settled in or born in, and wondered if my William was born in Yorkshire.

They were married in January 1788 in Staveley, and their first child William, was christened in July 1796 in Staveley. Well the first one I have found.

Where would I find more details about this couple and the 8 years they were away from Derbyshire. Presuming they are the ones I am looking for?
