Armed Forces / New Zealand Uniform Identification Assistance Request
« on: Thursday 20 January 22 03:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find the military record for my childrens' Māori great great grandfather, who went by a number of names, but have so far been unsuccessful.  I've finally managed to obtain a copy of a photo in which he's wearing his uniform, although it's primarily a head shot, and whilst the 28th Māori Battalion is well known, it's possible he served with a 24th or 25th Māori Battalion or Regiment.  Can anyone provide any assistance based on the attached photograph?  Many thanks in advance.

** Edited to add correct Marriage Date and Surname**

Hi,

I'm trying to trace a Frances Hodge, who arrived in New Zealand with her sister Nancy Dorothy Hodge on the 10th of May 1920, and was witness to Dorothy's (the name Nancy used most) wedding to my great grandfather, John Henry Liggins, on the 12 of August 1920.  Frances was born in Glasgow, Scotland on the 23 January 1886, although the Passenger Lists of herself and Dorothy leaving England to go to Sydney, and then from Sydney to Wellington, all record her age as being younger.  Also, the Passenger Lists only record her and Dorothy's initials.

Other than her being recorded as a witness to the marriage, I think I've found her in the 1928 Electoral Roll living in Warea, South Taranaki, but after that she seems to just disappear.  According to Dorothy's granddaughter however, she did continue to live here, although not sure where.  Not quite sure where to look next, so any assistance would be most appreciated.

Scotland / Scotland Records of Nurses during WW1
« on: Sunday 05 December 21 22:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I was wanting to find out if there is any Scotland resource that can be used for finding out about someone who was a nurse during WW1.  My great grandfather (from New Zealand) apparently met his second wife (born in Scotland) in a hospital, possibly located in Scotland.  I've checked my great grandfather's war records, but only Hornchurch and Codford are mentioned, and I think both of those may have been Convalescent Hospitals.  I'm trying to locate the hospital that they met at, in the hopes that it might confirm whether or not it is her on a Passenger List coming to New Zealand two days before they married, and full names aren't recorded on this List, only initials.

Any help would be most appreciated.  Just in case there are records, the name of the Nurse was Dorothy Nancy Hodge, born 1898 in Lennoxtown.  She sometimes went by Nancy Dorothy Hodge.  Many thanks.

Armed Forces / New Zealand WW1 Uniform Identification
« on: Wednesday 01 December 21 02:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am hoping that someone might be able to assist me in relation to two photographs, which I believe are of my great grandfather, John Henry Liggins (aka Harry), who served in the Boer War as well as WW1 in New Zealand.

I've been provided with a photo of 'Harry' by his granddaughters, one that used to hang on their grandmothers wall, and as she was his wife (second), you'd think that she'd know whether or not it is him.  I will attach that photo to this post, and then attach a photo that is apparently of a different person to a post below this one.  To me, it is clear that they are definitely the same man, although in a book, the second photo is attributed to being one Osborne Liggins, proper name William Osborne Liggins, who is John Henry Liggins' cousin.  However, in this photo, the uniform does NOT match either of the mens Service records, which are available online in New Zealand via Archway.  So, I really need some help with uniform identification.

I'm hoping to receive within the next few days a very small photo that *might* be of Osborne, aka William Osborne Liggins, but that will take time to determine whether or not it is of him.  It was however found in a box that contained his WW1 Medals.

Here's the photo that I was provided by my great grandfathers granddaughters.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Wellington Archives Lookup - Coroner's Inquest File
« on: Sunday 21 November 21 09:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I live in Dunedin, but would like to ask if someone could please get copies all the documents in an Inquest File for Vivian George Sinnamon, who died in December 1949 after being injured in a horse race.  I have a portrait of his father that I want to get restored, and thought that it might be good to put his father's story hidden in the back, and given that his father died in an accident in 1937, and Vivian George was his only child, would like to include more about Vivian junior.

I'm not sure if people can access the Archives as yet, but would very much appreciate it if someone could look up Vivian juniors Inquest records at some stage.  Here's a link to his record - https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=25652776

Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Assistance Needed with Inquest of John Sinnamon
« on: Wednesday 22 September 21 03:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm hoping that someone might be willing to assist me in deciphering the attached PDF, which is made up of images from an Inquest that took place in 1908.  Just in case this exceeds the file size limitation, I have provided a link to the file on my Google Drive.  The information in this is quite important, as we are trying to determine the children that Mary Slater, referred to as a Housekeeper, but also as Mrs Sinnamon, might have had with the said John Sinnamon.  Thank you very much in advance.

Hi,

My great grandfather, John Henry Liggins, was killed in 1934 accidentally after being hit or thrown by a train off a bridge, and his file can only be viewed in Wellington, I live in Dunedin, so I was wanting to ask if there would be someone who is visiting the Wellington Archives and who might be able to look up his records and obtain a copy for me?  This is a link to the entry on the Archway website - https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23860448

Many thanks for any assistance.

New Zealand Completed Requests / NZDF Military Uniforms
« on: Monday 15 March 21 09:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to identify two young men in a family portrait who both are in uniform, and both were enlisted in World War 1.  I have looked at their military records on the NZ Archives website, but given that I know very little about ranks, uniforms etc., that wasn't much help to me, so I'm hoping someone here more knowledgeable about such things might be able to assist.

The names of the two men are Alexander Bringans (WW1 9/315a - Army), and Andrew Dewar Bringans (WW1 58670 - Army), and I have attached the photo below.  It is possible that the young man on the left in the photo is Andrew Dewar Bringans, as it appears that he has been "edited" into the photograph, possibly due to the fact that he died in 1922.  But, I'd rather confirm which young man is which if at all possible. Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

I live in Dunedin and am wanting to somehow access the School Admission registers etc. for the Ashburton, Timaru, Canterbury areas to search for family members that I believe may have attended schools up that way circa 1885 to 1910 (a guestimate).  How can I do this?  Does anyone know if I can access those records online if I'm a Member of the NZSG?

I'm trying to research my great grandmother, Lilian (or Helen) Clark, and a number of her sisters who may have attended school there, as there is a Canterbury connection with my great grandmother, and her younger sister is recorded as Ashburton being her previous school when she was admitted to a school locally.

Many thanks for any guidance on how I can access this information.
