Canada Lookup Request / ANNIE COCARILL nee SPURRELL b. circa 1887 Trinity NFLD
« on: Sunday 14 January 24 19:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
So, digging for early records in Newfoundland is like looking for Protestant records in Ireland!
It is a slog and I could use some help!
I have Annie Spurrell marrying George Cocarill in St. John's Newfoundland in 1908.
No parents listed so I have no idea who Annie's family was (Brick wall #1).
Then George & Annie and their growing family show up on the 1921 Census still in St. John's but under the surname COCHRANE.
Why the name change I have no idea - it is not a slip of the census taker as their grandchildren carry that surname into today (Mystery #1).
Anyway George Cocarill/Cochrane dies in 1928 and his children show up on the 1935 with no mother Annie.
I have been unable to find Annie after his death as a Spurrell or Cocarill/Cochrane (Brick wall #2).
Not sure if any sleuth can pick up something on Annie that I have not been able to find?
Appreciate the help

Hi All
So, I have George Austen French born 1828 Rye - father George French, mother SarahTiltman.
George shows up with his Mom Sarah and his sister Sarah on the 1841 in Rye - Dad George is a marnier/grocer but not on the 1841 census with them so maybe he was at sea?
Then on the 1851 census Mom Sarah is on her own in Rye - I think her daughter Sarah died and her husband George and son George Austen are now both Mariners and have Masters certificates on Ancestry - guess they were at sea?
Then on the 1861 census George Austen French, Dad George and Mom Sarah are enumerated on George Austen's boat.
That is it....
I cannot find mention of George Austen French after the 1861 census
I cannot find a marriage for him or a death for him either.
Using FreeBMD I believe his father George died in 1877 in Rye but this is just speculation.
Can anybody pick up the trail of this guy????
I would appreciate the hand up :)

HI all
Wondering if there is an online resource that can be searched for Wills 1869?

Specifically I am looking for a Will for John French whose death was registered in Fylde Lancashire in the 2nd quarter (Ap, May, June).  He was approximately 77 at the time of his death.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated

Hi All

So, I have exhausted the avenues I can think of to try and find info on - John French.
Wondering if someone out there might have ideas or better luck?
I am hoping maybe there might be a way to track him through Seaman's records or his later profession as Porter but how to go about that I have no idea????
I would guess he was born 1790 ish ....
There are a couple of trees on Ancestry that list who his parents were but ... they made leaps that I think are incorrect  ::)

This is what I know:
John French marries Martha Kemp 23 May 1813 in Rye.
They have a son John French born & baptised 1818 in Rye (This son John goes onto marry Caroline Dengate in 1841 and then he dies in 1851)
Just to keep the two John's straight  ;)

Anyway, John French and Martha French appear as witnesses on a marriage in 1819 in Rye of an Elizabeth French to a John Lingham (I suspect this Elizabeth French to be John French senior's sister).
However I have not been able to track her after this marriage :-\ - this dilemma for its own post on John Lingham and Elizabeth French ;)
Moving on, after this entry, as a witness in Elizabeth's marriage, John French Sr. does not appear again on any records I can find  :-\...

He was listed as a seaman on his marriage to Martha and when his son John marries in 1841 he in turn lists his father (John sr) as a mariner.
John Sr. does not appear on the 1841 Census with his wife Martha and son John.
It would seem he was still alive though.

From the death certificates of his son and wife:
John jr. dies in 1851 - his profession listed as Porter - the informant was his wife
Martha dies in 1852 - 'wife of John French Porter' - the informant was her sister.

Anyone able to pick this guy up anywhere???
I'd appreciate the hand

Kildare / William Kearns b. circa 1857 Kildare
« on: Wednesday 23 February 22 15:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Looking for a RC baptism of William Kearns born circa 1857 in co. Kildare.
Father was John Kearns coach builder.
With the limited resources I am having a hard time with this guy and his parents, any siblings.

I believe I pick him up in 1901 census as a widower with 7 children in Dublin, Merchant's Quay.
He is a coach builder living McClanes Lane.
I believe from a marriage I found that William married in 1880 in Balbriggan to Ellen McCabe (she subsequently died in 1901).
Trouble is none of their children's baptisms, the ones I found, give me any of his family (no Kearns) as witness/godparent etc. ... no McCabe either.

William then marries a Mary Anne Power Moran in 1902.
On the marriage he says bachlor she says spinster but they are both widowed.
She is a widow of Thomas Moran.
William lists father as John Kearns coach maker.

William and Mary (Polly) can then be found in 1911 with her 3 daughters from her previous marriage (although they appear as Kearns) and their daughter together, Harriet Kearns.
They are living in Maynooth Kildare.

Then in 1916 Mary and 2 of her "Moran" daughters from the previous marriage and daugher Harriet all head to Canada.  It says she is married on the ships record but I think William must have died by then.

I found a death in Dublin 1912 but his profession is gardener...age is right.  Wife Mary....

I have hit dead ends galore with tracking his first seven children too...trying to find facts about William.  Seems no one has a tree at ancestry either for this family.

Looking for some leads or help  :-\

Europe / Where to look for Prisoner records from Ravensbrück ?
« on: Monday 14 December 20 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters :)

Does anyone know where I might look for lists or records of prisoners from Ravensbrück Concentration Camp?

The woman I am looking for a record for was Yugoslavian.
She was picked up in Vienna by the Gestapo in 1944 for engaging in "anti Nazi activity".
So she was considered to be a 'political prisoner'.
She spent just under a year at Ravensbrück.

When she first applied for help after liberation, no file could be found to support her claim as Ravensbrück was under Russian control.
She eventually did get compensation for suffering 'Nazi persecution' so a record must have been found?

Thank you for the help

Europe / Slovene Baptism entry- help needed reading all the hand written add ons!
« on: Tuesday 10 November 20 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

From the Matricula Online I have a baptism entry 1897 from Slovenia.
It seems common for things to be added thru the years to an entry, things that pertain to that particular individual.

I have enlarged and cut the image as it shows what I am interested in and have been trying to decipher with only limited luck.  :-\

1. All those various dates to the far left of Mathias' original date of birth/baptism.  Any one know what they pertain to or what they say for that matter?
2. Also it says he married Ana Gomzi but I am not sure, does it say Married(Porocen) and then give an actual place name before the marriage date 30/6 1924.
As Ana Gomzi does not appear to be from this parish so that word after Porocen but before the date is what I really would like to figure out so I can maybe find her!
3. It says he died Apr 12 1959 in Maribor center... not sure what else it says there. Is it an address?
Then below the date of death is Apr 30 1959 is that buried?  And the cemetery?

I could sure use a fresh set of eyes and maybe some expertise

Hi All

Looking for the family of William Entwistle born circa 1804+/- in Middlesex and wife Jane born circa 1822 +/- in Stepney.

I am looking for any hints of the family on the 1871 census.
Plus I am looking for an actual marriage of William Entwistle to Jane (?) presumably around 1845 range.  And presumably in greater London given then birth places identified for their children.

Entwistle seems to be a popular name in Lancashire, northern England but not London!

I have located the family on the 1851 Census: Living in Islington West
William Entwistle 47, sales clerk;  wife Jane 29; daughter Emma 5;  son William 3; son Albert

I have located the family on 1861 Census: Living in Shoreditch, Haggerstone West
Jane (now head but married) still 29, midwife; daughter Emma 15; son William 13; son Albert 10; son Henry 8.  NO SIGN OF WILLIAM

I am having a hard time finding the family on the 1871 and suspect there might be a name transcription problem

Further I have yet to find an actual marriage for William Entwistle and Jane (?).  A tree online has suggested Jane's surname is "Nash"  but I cannot come up with anything.

Would love a hand in the hunt :)

Europe / Help tracking a family from Maribor, Slovenia 1920 range
« on: Wednesday 21 October 20 01:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I am out of my element here and my language (whether Slovene or German) and so I could sure use some help from someone who knows the language and the genealogical resources that are available.

I am looking for a bit of direction on how to research for a family in the 1920's from Maribor, Slovenia.

The family name was SKROBAR and all I have to go on are the rather anglicized versions of their Christian names.

Matthew Skrobar married Anna Gomzi and they had 7 children, 6 girls and a boy:

Gela, Albina, Nada, Silva, Anica, Danica, and son Marian.  All have now passed away.

I believe daughter Albina was born in 1924 and son Marian in 1936.  I have no idea how many of the girls were born before Albina?  Thus I am not sure when Matthew and Anna would have married.

I am hoping that it was before 1920 given the privacy issues (100 years) that I am sure are the same there as here.

I would appreciate any help
