The Common Room / William Gough
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can help me?

I'm looking for William Gough b approx 1817.  in Wales possibly in a place called Towin, which doesn't seem to exist when I look it up or in Montgomeryshire.

He married Sarah Goodall on the 14th May 1840 at Great Hanwood in Shropshire and Sarah gives her birth place as Shrewsbury, where several of their sevn kids were born.  There is a possiblility that William's father was Edward Gough but I can't prove this.

They appear on the 1841 and 51 censuses.  In 1851, they are in Walsall Stafford, where William gives his occupation as Collar and Harness Maker. Apparently according to my Grandfather, who has researched this, William also owned a pub in Liverpool at some point on one of the censuses.

His daughter, Margaret Pugh Gough married James Mundy in 1873 in Liverpool and this is where the rest of the family also lived.

However, annoyingly, neither my Grandfather, who has been researching the family historry for years, or I can find a death for either William or his Wife. Or indeed the actual birth record for William, to find his fathers name.

If anyone could help us track these down that would be great.
Thanks

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Social History Books
« on: Thursday 28 January 10 11:18 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me?

I am trying to find out about social history books from the 60s,70s and 80s to reference in an essay.  Does anyone know of any books published around this time that deal with the working classes especially life in villages?

Thanks in anticipation!!

The new US census has started

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8479962.stm

I wonder how many people will get censused (is this a word?) twice?

Alos in 70 or 80 years when the census is released how many people will try to know hwere there ancestors were on the night of Mar 15 only to find it was done 2 months earlier and how many babies will escape?

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Burial look up please
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone if possible please look up a burial/death for me.

I have the GRO reference and will be ordering the certificate but would like to see if there is any further information on this guy.

Thomas Gresham Lincoln aged 51 7a_593

I shall murder the guy if he turns out to be the guy I have spent several years looking for his death in the USA.  The age is roughly right.

Thanks

Armed Forces / Grenadier guards
« on: Tuesday 05 January 10 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
An ancestor of mine, William Barnes served in the Grenadier Guards for a term in the 1880s.

He was born in 1856 in Bristol and is with his family in Bristol in 1871.
In 1881, he is in the Grenadier Guards at Aldershot Camp.

I can't find any mention of him on the Grenadier Guards records up to 1874 or on the National Archive site and am therefore trying to work out when he joined and when he left as by 1891 he has left and is living in Lambeth with his wife and family.

If any one could let me know the minimum service time in the Army at this time and suggest where else I could look, I would be grateful.

I know from research that the Grenadier Guards were involved in the 1882 Eygptian campaign.  Would medal records still exist from this?

Thanks

The Common Room / Baptised twice
« on: Sunday 29 November 09 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am transcribing some baptism records for FreeReg and have come across to entries next to each other but on separate pages of the register.
They are of the same person!  The details are exactly the same apart from the date which is 7 days apart and they are recorded by the same person.
IGI have the same information so I'm not going mad which was the first thought. ;D

Why is this likely to have happened? surely if the first was an emergency christening you wouldn't need another one once the baby has survived 7 days or is it not me but the curate who is going mad! ;D

Can any one suggest a reason as this is intriguing me?

The Common Room / Historical Directories
« on: Sunday 15 November 09 12:59 GMT (UK)  »
Is a Shoemaker likely to show up on a directory?

What professions are listed?  Was there a direct criteria list or was it just realtive importance.  I know my ag lab ancesters don't show up but on another side of the family tree there is a Shoemaker and I can't find him either.

Which professions are therefore likely to show up and does it vary with the publishers or the year they were published?

Surrey Lookup Requests / 1851 census look up please
« on: Friday 13 November 09 22:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking for a John Arnold in Lambeth in 1851.

On the 1841 census he was at East Place, Lambeth, Kennington 2nd  with daughters but no wife.
I am trying to see if his wife is dead or if she just wasn't with him on census night.  I have a vague hunch that the wifes name might be Ann, which as you can imagine doesn't stand out when looking for a death!

Thanks

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / James BARNES birth look up please
« on: Thursday 12 November 09 21:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find a James Barnes born in Horningsham in 1798-1801?

He gives different ages on the 1841 and 1851 census where he is living in Bristol.  In 1851 he gives his birth place as Horningsham, Wilts.

I have tried looking him up on the IGI information via - Hugh Wallis but haven't found him.

I believe he marries a Sarah ? at some point but am unsure whether this takes place in Wiltshire or Gloucestershire and her birth place is down as not known on the 1851 census but she is definitley not from Gloucs as on the 1841 census her birth place is given as not in Gloucs.

Many Thanks
