Technical Help / Microsoft Publisher
« on: Saturday 29 January 22 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have a lot of family history stuff saved in Publisher docs (I always found it the easiest way to cut and paste several bits of information + images on one sheet) These date back to 2012 and before.

Back to the research after a long break, new laptop with Open Office only. So I need to buy a version of Publisher to access my old documents. I've had a Google but don't know what I should buy - if I get an up-to-date version will it read my old documents? On the other hand I saw a 2010 version available (new I think) but wasn't sure if it was a bit dodgy  ???

Any recommendations very welcome, thank you

The Common Room / Where was Green Street, Chelsea?
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a family who might be mine in the 1851 census living in Green Street, parish of St Luke's, Chelsea, Middlesex. Googling it just brings up Green Street in Newham. Can anyone tell me where it might have been please? Just idle curiosity really as I have the general area, but I'd be very grateful if someone could point me to it.

Thank you

World War Two / My father John King - date photo please
« on: Thursday 02 December 21 11:15 GMT (UK)  »
I'd always assumed this was 'my dad when he was in the army'. My granddaughter wants to know more as she is doing WW2 at school.

Dad was in the Royal Corps of Signals and took part in D Day. Some years ago I had a lot of wonderful information from some of you about that day and his likely movements, thank you.

I only realised today that he is wearing his medal ribbons, so not taken during the war. So was this photo taken when he joined the TA after the war?

They married in 1947 so presumably it was before that.

Any guesses please?

And if anyone can tell me what the medal ribbons mean I'd be grateful. I don't remember seeing any medals.

Thank you

The Stay Safe Board / Another vaccination scam
« on: Monday 25 January 21 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
My daughter just had an email telling her she is eligible for a Covid vaccination. The email address was apparently no-reply@nhs.gov.uk - when she hovered over it a foreign address showed up. There was a link which she didn't click.

According to Facebook this is now doing the rounds.

Technical Help / Typing accented letters on a computer with no number pad
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 22:11 GMT (UK)  »
I was completely unaware until recently that some laptops (notebooks?) don't have a number pad.

Teaching languages for years my colleagues and I used to use the number pad routinely and easily to type accented letters. My daughter is a primary languages teacher and told me her new Chromebook has no number pad so every time she needs to type an accented letter she has to go to Insert then Special Character then scroll through the very detailed list which is laborious and irritating.

Does anyone know a better/ quicker way?

The Time We Spring-Cleaned the World

The world it got so busy,
There were people all around.
They left their germs behind them;
In the air and on the ground.

These germs grew bigger and stronger.
They wanted to come and stay.
They didn’t want to hurt anyone -
They just really wanted to play.

Sometimes they tried to hold your hand,
Or tickled your throat or your nose.
They could make you cough and sneeze
And make your face as red as a rose.

And so these germs took over.
They started to make people ill,
And with every cough we coughed
More and more germs would spill.

All the queens and kings had a meeting.
“It’s time to clean the world up!” they said.
And so they had to close lots of fun stuff,
Just so these germs couldn’t spread.

We couldn’t go to cinemas
Or restaurants for our tea.
There was no football or parties,
The world got as quiet as can be.

The kids stopped going to school,
The mums and dads went to work less.
Then a great, big, giant scrubbing brush
Cleaned the sky and the sea and the mess!

Dads started teaching the sums,
Big brothers played with us more,
Mums were in charge of homework
And we read and played jigsaws galore!

The whole world was washing their hands
And building super toilet roll forts!
Outside was quiet and peaceful,
Now home was the place for all sports.

So we played in the world that was home
And our days filled up with fun and love,
And the germs they grew smaller and smaller
And the sun watched from up above.

Then one morning the sun woke up early,
She smiled and stretched her beams wide.
The world had been fully spring cleaned,
It was time to go back outside!

We opened our doors oh so slowly
And breathed in the clean and fresh air.
We promised that forever and always
Of this beautiful world we’d take care!"

Take care

The Common Room / Help please - getting a 1995 death certificate from Spain
« on: Wednesday 29 May 19 08:18 BST (UK)  »
For legal reasons a friend needs to obtain the death certificate of a relative who died in Spain in 1995. She's tried ringing various numbers in Spain but met the language barrier. Apparently the person was brought back to be buried in the UK.
Would the death be registered with GRO so my friend could get a cert from them? Or can any kind soul suggest the next step to take please? I'm going to suggest email the British Consulate but wondered if there was a quicker way?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

FH Documents and Artefacts / Mystery bracelet
« on: Wednesday 05 April 17 12:20 BST (UK)  »
A friend's father (aged 80) has come across a bracelet which he thinks belonged to his father but doesn't know anything about it. I haven't seen it but apparently it's heavy and fits a lady's wrist.  It looks a bit 'industrial' to me with the odd lock mechanism or I wondered about Trench Art - although a quick google doesn't show anything like it - or something Masonic  ???

Those are my first thoughts but actually we don't have a clue. Hope I can attach the pix ok as we're on holiday & the internet connection isn't great  8)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Armed Forces / John C Young 3rd Battn Middx Reg
« on: Saturday 18 February 17 21:49 GMT (UK)  »
John Christian Young (1884-1944) was my grandfather. I have him in all the censuses (born St Giles in the Fields, lived St Pancras area). He married Cecilia Sweeney in 1920.

In 1911 he is in India serving as a Private in the above regiment. This is the only record I can find of his military service.

I thought he would be in the Pension records or the medal lists but haven't managed to find him.

Can anyone find any more about him please? I'd love to know when he joined/left the army, whether he fought in WW1, anything really.

Thank you

Pat
