The Common Room / Has anybody been to the Westminster Archives?
« on: Thursday 19 July 12 20:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm visiting London soon on a family trip and will have a couple of hours to spare so I would like to visit the Westminster Archives.
They hold a lot of the material for Waring and Gillow where my Grandfather worked in the early 1900's.

My question is about taking photos and photocopying etc? Does anybody know how strict they are, particularly on taking photos?

Thanks
Mike

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help dating this photo please?
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I've been going through lots of our old family photos and this one jumped out as it looks
particularly old. It appears to be stuck to some rather thick cardboard.
I've no idea who it is either, so if you can manage to tell me that! haha :)

Thanks
Mike

Census and Resource Discussion / Best Census 1911 site?
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 22:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi, in the past I have used and paid for census records for 1911. I need to start doing some more research
and I'm just wondering if there is a better or more cost effective way of looking at the 1911 records?
Thanks

Lancashire / How to find relative that was landlord?
« on: Saturday 15 January 11 12:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I've heard a rumour that my gt grandfather might have been a landlord of a pub in the town where he lived for a short time.
I've written to the brewery who I think had the pub at the time but they have not responded.
I have a feeling it was sometime between 1901 and 1920, the pub is the Castle Hotel on China Street in Lancaster.
It is still there but as with many pubs has changed names!
Thanks for any help,
Mike

Hi,
just wondering if anyone else has experimented with sharing a single Gramps database file between a Mac and a PC using Dropbox for the sharing?
It should be possible but I wanted to know if the DB is fully compatible between the two operating systems?

Thanks

US Lookup Requests / Photo of Port Clinton required please.
« on: Wednesday 06 October 10 09:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm collecting photos of as many of my ancestors homes as possible.
I've found that one of my great uncle's and his family (moved from Burnley UK) lived in
Port Clinton, Ohio.
Their address was 215 Short St, Port Clinton, this was circa 1918 onwards. I notice from google maps that
the road is still there, sadly no street view is available.

I wonder if anybody in that location would be able to take some snaps of that area and mainly
their house, 215. It may not still be standing of course :)

I have been sent 3 or 4 photos of what I think is this house, it would almost seem that it was built
by my great uncle.

If anybody can oblige I would be very grateful.

Many thanks
Mike

Canada / Frank Dent.
« on: Monday 08 February 10 08:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to find any more information on one of my great uncles, Frank Hitchon Dent.
He was born in Burnley, Lancashire, UK on Oct 31st 1884.
He sailed from Liverpool in March 23rd 1911. He seemed to make at least two trips back to England
until about 1926.

I can't find any further information about him, not sure if he had any children or where he settled?

Thanks for any pointers or info.

Mike
