Angus (Forfarshire) / DO ANGUS/DUNDEE MUSEUMS PURCHASE WAR MEDALS?
« on: Sunday 25 November 12 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I am wondering whether any museums in the Angus area purchase war medals.

I'm not selling but while researching the Baird family of Montrose/Dundee I found newspaper clippings about Joseph Baird, Company Sergeant Major in the Black Watch.  Joseph fought in WW1 and was the first Non Commission Officer of Montrose to be awarded the Military Cross.

As you can imagine, I felt very proud and in a Google search came across his 5 War Medals for sale in the UK.  I thought was rather sad that the family would sell them.  In Australia (where I live) some museums have funds available to purchase this sort of memorabilia.  I just wish I had the money to buy them.

I tried to contact Tay Valley Family History Society through their website but my email is not going through, probably because I'm not a member.

Kind regards, Sarah Baird

Does or is anybody know or researching the above names in relation to these 5 men being brought to trial before the High Court in Edinburgh in 1838 or the Glasgow Cotton Spinners Co-operative.

They were convicted on one charge and sentenced to 7 years transportation.  An Appeal did go to the House of Commons, and I think they had their sentences reduced.

What I would really like to know is, were they actually transported to Botany Bay, Australia.

I can't for the life of me find anything in google books that they were transported and Ancestry has details of a Thomas Hunter but the details don't seem quite right.

And if they were transported to Australia and had their sentences reduced then would they return to Scotland? to their families, could they afford it?  Thanks  Sarah

Angus (Forfarshire) / MARRIAGE BY WARRANT OF SHERIFF - BAIRD & BOOTH, DUNDEE
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 04:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, after not researching for awhile Im back into it.  I came across a marriage cert. today for David Beattie Baird b. 1872 Montrose.  On 31 Dec 1898 he married a Margaret Booth of 19 Peddie St, Dundee  at Tailors Hall, Dundee.  The 1901 Census shows Margaret (Maggie) Baird living with her mother Mary Booth at 19 Peddie St with her sister Agnes and son Harold Baird age 2.

In 1903 Maggie Baird (Booth) gave birth to a Georgina McArthur Baird or Booth.  The writing is not too clear but there is a dispute as to David Beattie Baird being father because he left in 1899.

In 1918 there is a marriage for a David Beattie Baird to Agnes Jessie Booth.  By that time Maggie Baird (Booth) must have died because he is noted as widower.  In the column if irregular etc. it has "Warrant of Sheriff - Substitute of Forfarshire dated 31 Jul 1918".  Their declarations were made in the presence of an Edward & Ada Clark.  Could someone please give me an idea of why the Sheriff would get involved.

Lanarkshire / Robert & Matilda BOYLE to Clearfield, PA, USA in 1880s
« on: Sunday 01 August 10 11:32 BST (UK)  »
In this never ending quest of genealogy, I am looking for any info. on Matilda McKinnon b. Oban abt 1853 (Alexr. McKinnon and Catherine McTavish).  She married Robert Boyle a mason from Glasgow in 1879.  Robert's parents were Robert Boyle and Mary Ritchie.  After giving birth to Elizabeth and Mary before the 1881 Census, Matilda and Robert must have immigrated to the USA and I found them on a family tree living in Clearfield Co, PA (I am assuming it's Clearfield County, PA).

Is anyone researching the Boyles from Glasgow?

A Reid has a family tree on ancestry regarding a Matilda McKinnon (niece of Matilda and Robert) who married George Raymond and then a James Webster Chalmers.  Matilda (Chalmers) emmigrated to Canada in 1922 to meet up with her mother Jessie McKinnon and sister.

It seems a bit odd that the same family would go to the other side of the world only to be separated, one in the USA and one in Canada.  I have heaps more info. on this family.  Regards, Sarah

Lanarkshire / Hunter/Buchanan of Partick

Hi, is anyone researching Patrick Hunter d. Dec 1901 and Marion Buchanan d. Feb 1909 both at Western Infirmary Hospital.  They were married in 1864.  Patrick (also notated as Peter on some certs.) parents were Thomas Hunter and Ann O'Connor.  Marion's parents were James Buchanan and Catherine Buchanan.

They had the following children:  Patrick; James; Agnes; John; Catherine and William.

William died in 1955 married to a Elizabeth Watson Vaughn.  He had a son also called William.

Catherine died in 1903 married to Duncan McTavish (from Oban).  They had daughters Elizabeth McFadyen McTavish and Marion Buchanan McNeil (nee McTavish).

Wondering if there are any relatives out there??                     Regards, Sarah

Hi everyone, i'm just wondering whether anyone has come across the book "Folk and Hero Tales" by D Macinnes.  A lot of the stories are retold to D Macinnes by an Archibald MacTavish during 1881-1882 in Oban.  Archibald was a native of Lagan, Lochbui, Mull and heard the tales from a tailor Hugh MacLachlan.

What I'm wondering is whether anyone is related to this Archibald MacTavish.  His occupation was noted as shoemaker and at the time of retelling these tales he was aged 74 years.

Thanks

Fife / Charles Baird, Missionary, Rosyth, Dunfermline
« on: Saturday 22 May 10 01:07 BST (UK)  »
I have a death cert. for a Charles Baird (b. 1865 Montrose) who died on 23 April 1933 at 21 Backmarch Road, Rosyth, Dunfermline.  His occupation was stated as Missionary m. to Mary Crocket.

Would anyone have any idea of the churches in that area that he may have been attached to.  (I'm assuming that's what a missionary means).  He married at St Andrew Dundee in 1895.

His son, Charles A Baird was noted on the death cert.

Thank you.

Sarah
