Last week Oxfordshire FHS embarked on a new venture.

Periodically, an advisor from Oxfordshire FHS will be present on Lilley Mitchell's show on BBC Radio Oxford, and will present the research they've done on the ancestors of a visitor to one of our helpdesk sessions around the county, with the candidate also present to hear the fruits of the further research.

Last week, Jerome Sale, the sports presenter on BBC Oxford, had some secrets of his ancestry uncovered by Sue Honoré, our journal Editor, and an Officer on our executive committee. You can hear the recording on iPlayer by going to http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05lfp13#play. Move the slider to 1:09 hours to start listening at the beginning of the family history segment. It will be available for the next 20 days.

Oxfordshire / Oxfordshire surname project
« on: Thursday 11 May 17 19:44 BST (UK)  »
Oxfordshire Family History Society (OFHS) has started a new Oxfordshire surnames research project, examining surnames recorded in Oxfordshire parish registers from 1538 onwards, currently estimated at up to 20,000 key variants. The team is also using many other early recorded sources to build a comprehensive database of Oxfordshire surnames. The aim is to trace their whereabouts in different parishes over time, their origins, hotspots, DNA connections and many other facets of Oxfordshire surnames. The project will take about 2 years to complete.

The project team is appealing for help from those who have a good recorded family history in Oxfordshire or who manage a one-name study. They are welcome to contact the team with a brief description and their contact details, so that when their surname is analysed they may be able to participate in submitting content for that name. All significant contributors will be acknowledged.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
# At this stage the team want just a interest in being involved - so please send your contact details, name of interest, and place(s) in Oxfordshire where you have records of the name's occurrence, to the team leader Sue Honore via surname-project[-- at --]ofhs.org.uk
# Later, you will be asked for more detail, tied to place - so wills, and newspaper records, for instance - or, for instance, gamekeeper licences - would all be of interest.
# It is anticipated that the analysis will be published as a book, with a page or so on the occurrence and detail of each name, and lots of maps, and with some information also made available on the OFHS website, in the members' section.
Do join the project!
Oxfordshire / Radio interview with Sue, OFHS's journal Editor
« on: Friday 04 April 14 18:53 BST (UK)  »
Sue Honore, the OFHS Editor, did indeed speak on Radio Oxford this afternoon, and her interview is now available on Listen Again.
Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01vf48j , and set the timer for 1hr 30mins into the programme.
I hope her enthusiasm for family history and OFHS might encourage anyone not currently a member of the Society to consider joining - you get three journals a year, and would be supporting genealogy in Oxfordshire.  Visit us at www.ofhs.org.uk
Oxfordshire / Top award for Oxfordshire Family History Society journal
« on: Friday 04 April 14 11:27 BST (UK)  »
I am *absolutely* delighted to be able to announce that, at the recent AGM
of the Federation of Family History Societies, Oxfordshire FHS won the large
societies category of the Elizabeth Simpson Award, which is an annual award
for 'the Journal making the Best Contribution to Family History'.
I received the certificate from Nick Barrett, President of the Federation,
on behalf of the Society, and it was subsequently presented at our monthly
meeting to Sue Honoré, our Editor.
However, more and even better was to come!
Our Society's name was then announced as being overall winners of the
Elizabeth Simpson Award, from a field of 39 journals entered.  Another
certificate, and a splendid, engraved, paperweight, were presented.
My congratulations go to Sue for her Editorship.  The journal submitted was
Sue's very first - April 2013.
A 'sampler' of the winning journal is at
http://www.ofhs.org.uk/j/Oxfordshire-Family-Historian-April-2013-pp16.pdf ,
and details of the award are at
http://www.ffhs.org.uk/awards/journal/current.php
Sue has been invited to talk about the award and the Society on BBC Radio
Oxford this afternoon, Friday, at about 2:30pm British Summer Time. on Kat
Orman's show.  To listen, go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radiooxford
