Wiltshire / Looking for a ghost

I have been contacted by a former occupant of The Old Police House in Downton who says that they regularly saw the ghost of a young girl in their house and on inquiring locally was told it was the ghost of a young girl who drowned in a well which used to be in the garden. I took this with a pinch of salt but I wonder if anyone has come across the death of a young girl in the 1920's onwards in Downton before I start looking through the back numbers of the local papers.

Eleanor Eliza Thorne b. 1886 Cerne Abbas had four illegitimate children. William Henry b. 1911 d.1911 Flossie b.1913 Dorothy b.1919 and Leslie b.1923. Is there any way I can find out who their fathers were. I cannot find any baptism records for them. In 1940 she married William Hammond but if he was their father why didn't they marry before?

Dorset / Sherborne Saddler Mystery

Alfred William Thorne b 1889 is in the 1911 Census albeit under the name 'Albert' as an apprentice harness maker and saddler aged 21 lodging with Emma Pope in Sherborne. He next turns up in Canada in 1912. Does anyone know anything about Sherborne saddlers then and how I can find out who he was apprenticed to and when he qualified? Also there is a family rumour that he left under a cloud so how can I find any Sherborne court cases or scandal of that era?

Wiltshire / Why was Joane executed?

My ancestor, Joane Newman of Downton, was executed at Fisherton, Salisbury in 1607 according to the burial register of Downton church. How can I find out the events leading up to this? Also was it unusual for an executed person to be buried in a churchyard? Any help gratefully received.

The Common Room / Trying to find a property's owner.

I am trying to find out who owns a property with little success. It is not registered with the Land Registry and rumour has it that the owners are the trustees of a will but who's and when it was written is unclear. The property dates from the early 19th Century and the front of it is listed. Presumably the original trustees are dead so how do I find out who the current owners are?
