Armed Forces / Army deserter 1885
« on: Tuesday 16 January 24 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon
My ancestor, Martin Henehan, enlisted as a gunner in the Royal Artillery in 1876. In Aug 1885 he was transferred to the Army Reserve (Ist class). In January 1886, his army record notes that he ‘absented himself from AR’, and he was listed in the Police Gazette as a deserter.

I have a couple of questions which I hope someone can help with.
1.   What does ‘1st class’ mean in the Army Reserve?
2.   How were army reservists monitored? There are loads of them listed as deserters in the Police Gazette. My understanding is that they received only part-time training but had to make themselves available if required. Would Martin have been required to make himself known at regular intervals and simply didn’t show up at barracks when recalled?
The Police Gazette states that he deserted at his home town in Ireland (Ballinrobe) and his last posting before transferring to the Reserves was with the N. Irish division of the Artillery.
I can well understand that if an opportunity to make a better living arose, that would be preferable to a part-time army role.

Thank you for any advice.

Galway / Merlin Park burial
« on: Monday 19 April 21 15:55 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the burial place of Sarah Desmond nee Mullan who died at Merlin Park Hospital in 1966. So far there is no evidence that she was buried in her home town in Co. Donegal and I am wondering if there was a cemetery associated with Merlin Park at this time where she might have been laid to rest.
Please can anyone help with this?
Many thanks

Dublin / Thomas Shelton Birth at Dublin Barracks
« on: Tuesday 02 March 21 11:24 GMT (UK)  »
I originally posted this request on the Military board pages but this might be a more sensible place for it.

I am trying to trace a birth/baptism record for Thomas Shelton born at Dublin Barracks around 1843 (according to census records). His parents were William Shelton and Elizabeth Summer from Lincolnshire and Thomas grew up in Lincolnshire. I have no further information on William Shelton’s occupation so I don’t know if he was in the Army but it seems worth exploring to explain why Thomas was born there.

I don’t know which parish (presumably Church of Ireland) the Barracks would come under or whether records exist for this period. Please can anyone point me in the right direction of any parish records relating to the barracks?

Many thanks

Derry (Londonderry) / Pub in Derry
« on: Friday 10 July 20 07:27 BST (UK)  »
Hoping that a local historian might be able to help with this query but it's a long shot.

Patrick Desmond lived at 7 Chamberlain Street, Derry in the 1920s (probably from 1920). He was a publican and I'm wondering if this residence was a pub at the time. Interestingly, a look on Google Streetview indicates that there is a bar on or close to the site now. Not sure if there are any street directories or photos frm the time that would help with this.
Many thanks for any advice.

Armed Forces / Abbreviation on headstone
« on: Saturday 27 June 20 09:15 BST (UK)  »
William Ewart Desmond (b. 1898) served in the RASC in WW1 as a private. He subsequently emigrated to Canada. His grave headstone gives his title as Sgt. and the letters R.C.A.S.C,. C.A. are engraved.

Can anyone tell me what these letters stand for and whether they throw any light on his promotion to Sergeant?
Many thanks

Northumberland / Curtis Road, Fenham, Newcastle
« on: Saturday 29 February 20 09:25 GMT (UK)  »
I'd be grateful for some help with this.
Looking on Google Streetview, there is a blue plaque on a house in Curtis Road, Newcastle. The image on Google is too blurred to read. This isn't part of the English Heritage scheme, nor of Newcastle's own commemorative scheme as far as I can tell. I think it relates to the building of the street.
Please can anyone tell me what the plaque says? I have a relative who lived near to this house and is very curious about it.

I have a cousin who died in 1928. The death certificate says he was a shirt cutter and gives an address at Coronation Buildings Warrington. Does anyone know where this was?
Many thanks

World War One / Help with abbreviation please
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 08:48 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me with some abbreviations in an entry in the WW1 Service Medal and Award Rolls.
In the 'Previous units' entry for Patrick Desmond Labour Corps Reg. no. 12302 is the following:
1st. & 2nd. S.A.M.B. 5167 Cpl., S.A.F. Arty. R. 1508, M.L.C. 12302

I assume Cpl. = Corporal and Arty. = Artillery, not sure about the rest.

Many thanks
