Essex / Joy Stock
« on: Saturday 06 March 21 23:02 GMT (UK)  »
My husbands Mothers side came from Great Dunmow in Essex.
I have found most of the children of Percy Valentine STOCK (1895-1976) and Florence Ellen REEVE (1902-1981)=David, Marina, William and Patrick but we know that Florence also had a child called Joy (about 1930)  but we are not sure if she was Percys child. (Florence and Percy married in 1931) I have tried to find her birth and also we know Joy married but cannot find a marriage either so if any one can find out anything about her,it would be great, thanks. It is just that my husbands mum remembers her well but I have not been able to put her on the tree yet...

Bedfordshire / sarah A Wiles (1826)
« on: Friday 05 March 21 21:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi its me again and hopefully this time I will not take you on a wild goose chase like I did with the Paynes.
This Sarah shows up on the 1881 census with her "Uncle" Pharez Swaile Morris (1886-1809)(he is MY 3rd Great Grandfather) but although she is transcribed as "servant", it clearly reads NIECE. The thing is I cannot find her parents at all as I only have 3 siblings for Pharez and the girls I think did not marry. Sarah was born in 1826 in St Neots according to that census and she is with her 3 children Ada Ellen 1870 William Bonnett 1874 and Arthur Henry 1877. She is noted as S for single. In the 1891 census she is there again in her own place with the children plus another Frederick A 1882. I have tried every combination of names and on Williams marriage it does say HIS father is William Bonnett Wiles too but there is no marriage between A William Wiles and a Sarah. On one of the childrens birth record, it states Wiles as his mothers maiden name. Not sure where she fits in at all though with my Morrises...any help please

Bedfordshire / George Payne 1811-1875
« on: Friday 29 May 20 18:36 BST (UK)  »
My GGGrandfather was born I believe in either Stotfold or Biggleswade and he married an Elizabeth Brown. So far so good, but the problem is I appear to have two lines of enquiry now going back from his father and not really sure which one is correct.
The first one I found is Richard Payne born 1793 in Houghton Conquest, Bedford who married a Mary Seabrook which seemed to tie in ok. Then because I got stuck a bit further on, went back and found another Richard Payne born 1763 in Stotfold marrying a MARY Dear. So first names ARE correct but not sure which pair are actually Georges parents. I don't want to continue on too far before I check this out. The first pair were quite young when they had George but thr second pair states there were three children and Sarah was the oldest born in 1804 which makes her parents in their 40s when they had her. Anyway any help to untangle this most grateful thanks

Essex / Margaret J Stock
« on: Sunday 24 May 20 00:09 BST (UK)  »
I have discovered that there is an article in the Chelmsford Chronicle archives but for some reason I cannot find it at all and I do not have a full subscription to the Newspapers.
I was wondering if anyone could look it up for me and let me have a printable version as this is something that will solve a big family mystery.
My husbands mum's father did not know his own father and was brought up by his gran when his mother couldn't cope. She did go on to get married to another chap who brought both children as his own. Anyway this article refers to a summons that Margaret Jane Stock gave to a Percy Sutherland about maintenance. The article date is 22/11/1907 and this would be more proof we have ever had. So Thanks very much!! julie

Canada / Megraw/Matthews
« on: Saturday 17 August 19 17:08 BST (UK)  »
hello I know I have some cousins in Canada-the Ontario/York area but cannot trace anything. These were the children of (my great-aunt) Ruth Matthews (1915-1990) and James William Megraw (1914-1983) I am reckoning on the son being born sometime between 1937-1940 and their daughter a couple of years younger. I have photos of them as well, this is how I knew there were children in Canada but only found out recently who they were.
The only thing I have for definite about them both is the memoriam gravestone picture of both their mum and dad with them as the children left behind.

So anything you can find about them would be good as they may still be alive and I could then hopefully connect with them to find out more about my Great Uncle and Great Grandparents who I again found out they had emigrated in early 1900s.
Thanks

Canada / Wilfred James Matthews
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Uncle Wilfred James Matthews born 1893 in Accrington Lancashire appears to have gone to Canada in 1916. I have a photo of a family including an Uncle Wilf and Aunt Lottie (possibly Charlotte?) but unfortunately no surname but I think this may be Wilfred. Its taken in Ontario Canada and I would like to be able to trace the family there.
His Mother was Maria Pearce 1861 of Tavistock Devon and Father James Matthews 1857 of St Buryan Cornwall
Anything please

Essex / Bootmaker for Audley End
« on: Sunday 27 May 18 16:12 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if there is anyway I can find out more about my husbands ancestor who was a bootmaker for the family in Audley End/Saffron Walden. I am not sure where I got that information but he was born in Bishop's Stortford but lived in & worked in Audley End and this was mentioned in censuses
So any info about this like how true, how much was he paid as I don't think he lived in the house so must have had enough to live in town with his own family
So his name is Frederick Wedlock 1858-1939, lived in Hadham Road in Saffron Walden with wife Sarah and 6 children
His son George (1882-1945) was also a shoemaker. Fredericks brother William (1852-1920)was a policeman
