United States of America / Leslie McGregor Douglas b. 1916 Newark, d. 1968
« on: Tuesday 13 February 24 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for descendants of Leslie (McGregor) Douglas born 3 Jan 1916 and/or any of his brothers. His parents were James Henry Douglas and Margaret Ewan Allan who emigrated from Scotland in 1912, and settled in New Jersey.
Margaret Allan was the daughter of James Allan (b.1843) and Margaret Ewan - I have a connection with James Allan. Anyone searching his family tree will find his marriage to Margaret Ewen in which the record shows James' father's name as Alexander Allan (deceased). End of story? No, Alexander was not deceased, he was transported to Australia for cattle stealing in 1844! I am descended from his second marriage in Australia. He married Jane Ogle in 1851 and they had 12 children!
I would love to find some descendants from James Allan, b.1843.

Aberdeenshire / Mary Duncan and Alexander Allan
« on: Tuesday 06 February 24 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
Mary Duncan married Alexander Allan (my 2xgreat grandfather) in 1843 at Drumblade.
In November Mary gave birth to a son James.
Unfortunately, in the meantime Alexander was convicted for stealing 4 head of cattle and transported to Australia.
I believe James grew up thinking his father was dead.
I have found a James Allan who died in Leith in 1930, aged 87 and wonder if it is Alexander's son?
Alexander married again(to Jane Ogle) in Australia and had a large family, including a daughter Rosanna who was my great grandmother. She was born on the Ballarat goldfields in Dec 1854. She probably never knew she had an older brother in Scotland.

Dumfriesshire / McKenzie brothers death Castle Douglas 1819
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 05:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am descended from a McKenzie family that was living in Kirkcudbrightshire in the early 19th Century.
There is a gravestone in the Kirkcudbright cemetery for 3 brothers, William,(died 1829) George and Cuthbert,(1819).
The intriguing thing is the inscription which states 'Cuthbert and George who died Castle Douglas Dec 1819'.
I realise their grave is not in Dumfriesshire, but in relation to their deaths in Castle Douglas, maybe some records?
I cannot find a death record for any of them.
The fact that 2 brothers, I assume were quite young, died outside their own shire begs the question of what happened. Was it an accident?
If anyone has access to local records from this time I would be grateful for some advice.

Canada / McKenzie family New Brunswick
« on: Thursday 30 November 23 05:30 GMT (UK)  »
A John McKenzie died at sea on the brig Edward Walker in 1831 or thereabouts and was possibly buried at Digby, Nova Scotia. The newspaper reported that his funeral was departing from his brother K.McKenzie's residence at Reids Point - I assume Reeds Point near St John. My 2xgreat grandfather Kenneth McKenzie was in or near St John NB at this time so I am assuming it's the same family.
John's brothers, Kenneth, Hugh and Edward later had a ship built in St John New Brunswick c.1839 and sailed to Australia. Kenneth and Hugh stayed there, but Edward later (1850) went to San Fransisco and I have found plenty of records about him.
They all originated from Scotland of course, but had interests in Nova Scotia.
Just trying to work out what really happened to John and what Kenneth McKenzie was doing at Reeds Point in 1831/32.

Hi all,
just searching for the parents of my 2 x great grandmother, Elizabeth Holland..
I found a birth for Elizabeth in 1816, Portsmouth, mother 'Sarah' and not much else in the way of detail.
I know Elizabeth's father was John Holland from information she gave on her marriage(s) and he was in the employ of the Navy.
Also, one of the marriages was  witnessed by a Sarah Holland.
I have now found a marriage for a John Holland and a Sarah Beans, Portsmouth 1810 and would like to think these are Elizabeth's parents. On this marriage (Pallot's marriage index) it has 'R.Marines' next to John's name - could this mean Royal Marines? If so, lends a bit of weight to the finding.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / 1851 Census records
« on: Tuesday 23 May 23 06:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I am wondering if it is possible to search for an address in the census records.
My 2xgreat grandparents Charles and Elizabeth Sheppeard once lived at 7 Sackville st, Southsea. I am not familiar to this area but I assume it's in/near/part of Portsmouth. The address was given on birth of son Henry and also on the Allotment of Naval Pension paid to Elizabeth from Charles' wages in 1848/49. I can't find either of them in the 1851 census. I assume Charles was off somewhere on a sea voyage withthe Navy, but where was Elizabeth? Can i see who was living at 7 Sackville st Southsea at the time?
The Sheppeards emmigrated to Australia in 1853, so I am only interested in 1851.

Suffolk / Ipswich criminal records
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 13:33 BST (UK)  »
My 3xgrandfather Charles Fisher Sheppeard lived in Suffolk from birth in 1799 to about 1832. In 1823 he married Sarah Clark from Tattingstone. They had six children. From 1824-26 he was the innkeeper at the Shoulder of Mutton in Hadleigh and it seems he sold up after that, perhaps he was in financial difficulties.. The last record of his existence in Suffolk indicates he was in East Bergholt when his last child was born in 1831.
His next appearance is in New South Wales in 1836, so the immediate assumption is that he may have been transported for some offence, but I can't find a convict record that fits.
I am puzzled why he would leave his wife and children for any other reason. His wife Sarah remarried a few years later (calling herself a "widow") and was living in London with Charles Marsden in 1841.
CF Sheppeard spent several years as an overseer on a number of  sheep grazing stations, notably for Benjamin Boyd at one time. In 1849 he married Eliza Brown ("widower") in Melbourne, Victoria. He died in 1854.
Getting back to why and how he left England - are there any local records that might show him up if he had been convicted for something?
What other way and for what reason could he have emigrated? I can't find him anywhere between 1831&1836.

United States of America / San Francisco records
« on: Thursday 27 April 23 12:41 BST (UK)  »
My 3xgreat uncle Edward McKenzie sailed from Tasmania, Australia to San Francisco in 1849 on the 'Xylon'. He established some kind of merchant business there, possibly named McKenzie, Thompson and Co. I assume import/export shipping etc.
Edward married Mary Balley in 1853. They had a child Bridget who died as an infant.
There was a report of Edward's death in 1854 and he is buried at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery.
I can't find any records of his business dealings and don't have access to US newspapers. Can anyone help?

Armed Forces / Naval ratings, job descriptions, etc
« on: Thursday 27 April 23 12:26 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors (Charles Fisher Sheppeard) was a crewmember on the Steam Sloop 'Driver' in the late 1840's. He is listed as 'Seaman Schoolmr' which I assume is the Seaman's Schoolmaster who was responsible for education on board the vessel, but wondering what exactly he would be doing, how would he have been appointed etc.
