Lancashire / St Peter, Liverpool
« on: Thursday 19 January 12 07:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have found the following transcription for a Baptism in St Peter, Liverpool, 1821. I've researched the Church and it seems to no longer exist so does anyone know who would have the records? I'd love to look at the original and see if there is more information available.

Baptism: 29 Apr 1821
St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
James Mossford - [Child] of James Mossford & Martha
Abode: Norris St.
Occupation: Cordwainer
Baptised by: T. H. Heathcote
Curate Register: Baptisms 1820 - 1821, Page 275, Entry 2194 Source: LDS Film 1656418

Also, does anyone know if Norris St was in Manchested or Liverpool? By 1823 I know for sure the family are in Manchester but this could mean they began in Liverpool..?

Lancashire / Interpretating Kelly's 1929 Directory
« on: Monday 08 November 10 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Quick question,

Looking at Kelly's I have an ancestor - Arthur Ashworth Mossford - who appears as a clerk in the register. Under his name appears the reference "Geo. Househldr. 7 Lincoln Street, H(Hulme)". Could someone please explain what this means? Looking at other references I assume that Geo is George, but what relation to Arthur is he and what does Householder mean in this context (he also has his own direct reference earlier in the directory).

Many thanks for any answers!

« on: Sunday 24 January 10 11:21 GMT (UK)  »
Does anybody have access to the 1911 census? I'd love to see search results for a Walter Mossford, born Salford 1902. I'm hoping to connect another person's branch of Mossfords to my own..

Many thanks!

Lancashire / New Bridge St Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 12 January 10 17:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I ordered a death certificate for Henry Mossford (1822 - 1873) and he died in Manchester's New Bridge Street Workhouse. I'd never heard of these workhouses before but after reading about them he can't have had a happy life there!

Anyway, I've no record of him between his appearance in the 1841 census and his death (reported by his workhouse master). Ancestry searches don't list him for any censuses under any common variation of Mossford.

Does anybody know where a) which enurmeration district the workhouses fell under in the '51, '61, and '71 censuses (hopefully a name will pop out if I scan them all) and b) if it is possible to find information relating to inmates as they were called around the 1870's?

Many thanks!

Family History Beginners Board / Going back into the 1700's.. help please!
« on: Monday 28 December 09 15:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Please help me with some advice on how to go back further in time. At the head of my current tree is James Mossford:

James Mossford (born abt 1791) was born in Lancashire and appears in the 1841 census aged 50 with his wife Martha (nee Mathewson). I have found a record of their marriage in what is now Manchester Cathedral in 1808, and have found records for five children: William (1820), James (1821), Henry (1822), George (1826), and Mary (1828). I've also located James' and Martha's graves in Manchester General.

Could somebody please suggest any way in which I can go back further? How can I found out who James' `parents were?

Any help or advice very gratefully received!!

Thanks in advance,
George

Lancashire / Garden St, Ancoats
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 12:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've been trying to track down some streets in Manchester and people have been extremely helpful so far!

I've run into another wall with Garden Street on the 1861 census. There were two Garden Streets at the time I think. One right by Victoria Station (still standing) and another hidden away at the end of Tipping St, South East from London Road Station.

I'm not sure which one is the one my ancestors lived on. I've tried reading the description of the ED but can't follow it as I can't find the streets mentioned. I've also gone through the entire transcripts for that ED trying to locate neighbouring streets but no luck there either.

Can anybody help!!??

Lancashire / Help with Manchester/Salford street please!
« on: Tuesday 15 December 09 21:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to locate several streets where my ancestors lived and breathed but unfortunately most of them don't seem to be standing today (or have changed their name). If anybody could help me with any of these then I'd be very grateful (I've listed them in priority of interest)!

1. Middleton Building, Baird Street, Manchester (found on the 1841 census). A street by this name exists today just East from Manchester Piccadilly Station but I can't find it on any maps prior to 1935. Is this the same street?

2. 6 Elizabeth Street, Salford (1881 census). It is listed as being in the Regent Rd sub-district but there is no street in that area now..

3. 10 Moore Street, Manchester (1850 marriage certificate). No street here today..

4. 1 Garden Street, Manchester (1861 census). Listed in the Ancoats district but no street here today..

5. 15 Medlock Street, Manchester (1871 census). It is listed as being in the Deansgate area but there is no street here today - just an upper-Medlock St too far South to be in Deansgate).

6. 1 & 14 Scholes Street, Manchester (1848 marriage certificate). There is no record of a street in Manchester by this name today.

7. 6 Fletchers Street (1851 wedding certificate). Listed in the Ancoats district but there is no street here today.

8. 5 Preston St, Manchester (census 1841). Listed in the St George sub-district but there is no street by this name today.

I realise there's quite a few here, but as I said, they're listed in interest priority and I'd really appreciate any hints whatsoever!

Many thanks!

England / Help getting a record from a family history centre, please?
« on: Monday 07 December 09 20:50 GMT (UK)  »
I live in Finland and my nearest family history centre only opens Wednesday evenings - which is when I can't go because I'm looking after the young kids while my wife instructs a class.

If somebody could please please look for a record for me I'd be very grateful!!

I'm after a marriage between Martha Mathewson and James Mossford/Mopford (there are two entries, one for each name) that occurred in (what is now) Manchester Cathedral, 1808.

The batch number for the Mathewson - Mopford wedding is M016858 (that's all there is?)

There is more information for the other but I'm not sure what's relevant. All the information can be easily found by searching for James Mossford, marriage, 1808 - it's the only entry that comes up.

If anybody could please find this for me then that would be amazing. This is the top of my tree so I'm very much hoping to have a father named somewhere to allow me to add another generation...

Thank you in advance!

England / Family Legend?
« on: Friday 04 December 09 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have contacted several branches of Mossford's trying to trace my family tree and we have all heard the same rumour passed down that the Mossford name is traceable to a pair of Russian immigrants.

Supposedly, sometime in the 15- or 1600's a pair of brothers immigrated to Britain (probably Cheshire/Lancashire area) from Russia. One of them committed a murder and fled the country while the other stayed behind and changed his name to Mossford (possibly to distance himself from his criminal brother). One of the Mossfords suggested that his father - now deceased - had found a record of this name change in St Mary's Church at Tarporley, Cheshire but I contacted them and there is no such record (they kindly looked through for me).

Does anybody have any idea how to prove/disprove this rumour? I have no idea of even how to start, save searching through all the parish records in the country. While all branches have heard the same tale, nobody has any records.

Any help or advice would be very gratefully received!!

George
