I lived across the street from Hulme baths in Devonshire street. The baths were closed during the war, but the wash house was in use. In the winter it was a lovely warm place full of steam. We use to go inside and watch my mother with a pram load of washing.

For recreation we use to have a long rope hanging from the metal beams in the roof and swing across the empty pool area.

The next swimming pool would have been along Oxford road, High Street baths. One was in Old Trafford and another was near Main road City football grounds. (I did a lot of swimming in the summer months).

Hi Tony,

You mean in your time there were barracks down there......................  grin.

I also at one time lived in Moss Side near Moss Lane East and walked to work up Lower Moss Lane to the corner of Chester road. There was no direct bus route to this place. It took about 25 minutes.

Thanks for the welcome

Silk street is the next street west of Kingston street. I lived around the corner from them during the war. Sad to say they were flattened.
I have a map section dated 1894 if you are interested.
Be aware that people walked a few miles to work in them days. There were lots of Mills by the river Irwell. I would think about 1/2 an hour to walk to work. Also near by was a large India rubber comapny. which became Dunlops in the 1900's.
Cheers
