Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Frome PR's: NEEDS

Hello there,

There is a marriage of William Needs, sojourner,  to Mary Shipman (of this parish) in Whatley, St George, on 13/09/1779.

Marriage was by Banns and the witnesses were John Needs and John Long.

Hello there,

I wondered if you have the marriage certificate for Joseph and Elizabeth. This would give you the name of her father and his occupation. Whilst you may still have very many Jones names to trawl through on the census, it should narrow it down considerably.

The other thing it should provide is her age at the time of marriage, so you would have another clue as to her birth date.

I have experienced similar problems with my Roberts family from Mold. It has been possible to get back to the late 18th century, beyond that is doubtful.

Best wishes,

Jo

Hello again,

Just a thought but could the others be elsewhere in schools too?

Hello Jason,

Could Emma Bayley be the person who is a pupil in school in Market Drayton?

The reference is: HO107/1996 Page 191.

She is aged 17 and shows born Stapeley, Cheshire.

Looks promising.

Best wishes,

Jo.

Hello Ken,

Thank you for taking the time to look for this.

There is a possibilty of a connection here. I have found a marriage in Bristol in 1883 of a John Britton to Mary Jane Pullen. Need to pursue to find if there is a link.

The Bible also has an entry about the international branch of a bank. Could she have sent money overseas I wonder?

Many thanks.

Jo

Hello there,

Thanks for the additional colour and restoration undertaken.

The comments on the flowers were interesting. Some family members have suggested that these could have been daffodils. That flower would be significant as the lady, Sarah, was born on 1st March 1839. the date of 1st March is St David's Day.

Sarah's mother was Welsh too. Plus, though Sarah was born near Bristol, she married in Cardiff and later lived in Newport, before she moved to London.

The Welsh connections are well established and I wonder if that is what the message is here.

Another family member has put it forward that this photo was taken on Sarah's birthday, St David's Day, that it why they are wearing these flowers.

As to the sailor suit, I have a photo of my father in one of these, it dates from c1919. I was told that they were fashionable then.

Sarah is a very intriguing lady indeed. I was fascinated by the fact that after she was widowed in 1897, she remarried in 1904 at the age of 65 and to a man of 49, 15 years her junior.

Hello again,

I read the comments about the baby's attire with amusement.

I think the child would be her grandchild. Which one is very debatable as she had 9 children. The clothing is a christening gown and I believe the tradition was to hand these down within the family.

Sarah would not have been having problems with the washing. She had 2 laundries in London. These must have been sizeable businesses as she advertised in "The Times".

I am going to see which of her grandchildren was born at the time of this photo.

Thanks again for all the help etc.

Jo  ;)

Hello to all,

Many thanks for the opinions you have given. Also, thanks for the colour tint which gives a much better impression of the attire etc.

I think Sarah would have been very fashion conscious and dressed in the latest styles. On the other hand, she was very aware of money matters, she died a millionairess in 1909. Could be her clothes had to last!

I cannot do a scan of the back etc as I do not have the photo myself. This belongs to a relative.

I think the dates of late 1880s are probably right.

Thanks again.

Hello Irene and China,

It seems I need glasses! I shall be at the opticians tomorrow.

Thank you very much indeed. The colour photo brings it to life so much more.

The date(s) have come as something of a shock. The various reltaives who are descended from this lady were all of the impression it was much older. We need to have a rethink about the identity of the baby!

Thanks again.

Jo.
