Ireland / Mary WEYMSS
« on: Wednesday 08 December 04 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Great Grandmother was Mary WEYMSS. In 1849 she married Samuel MAJOR in Astbury, Cheshire. On the 1851, 1881 and 1891 census she says she was born in Ireland ( I haven't found her on the 1841, 1861, 1871 yet).
I wondered if there was any way I could trace her in Ireland and where should I start.
The marriage certificate says she was 17 years old,  her father's name is John and the witnesses are Margaret WEYMFS (WEYMSS) and S CARTLEDGE.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Cheshire / Solomon Leah
« on: Wednesday 08 December 04 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
Solomon LEAH was born 1803 in Cheadle Hulme or Stockport. In 1825 he married Mary BROWN in Cheadle.
In 1841 Solomon and Mary, with their 2 surviving children (James and Martha) were living at Edgeley, Stockport but then Solomon vanishes completely. There is no mention of Solomon after the 1841 census and no mention of him on the GRO death records.Mary moves in with her mother and eventually dies in 1877 but, apart from the 1871 census when she says she is a widow, she always says she is married. I assume from this that Solomon was somewhere, but where? He was probably with his brother,Jacob, who vanished at the same time. There is no trace of either of them in the register of deaths.
There was a Solomon LEAH on the muster rolls for a regiment called the Silver Greys in Cambris County, Pennsylvania, fighting in the Civil War in Pennsylvania. He was a private with the Silver Greys, Cambria County.(Also known as Palmers Independent Company).
Any ideas what might of happened to him? PLEASE.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 census for Stockport

Thanks for the help. Yes, My James Roberts married Margaret Major. Here are the details from the marriage certificate - 5th June 1876 James Roberts aged 29 years bachelor tobacco maker residence Adlington Square, Stockport father John Roberts deceased labourer. Witnesses were John Henry Mansfield and Elizabeth Major (brides sister).
James Roberts death certificate - 17th April 1895 Bollington aged 48 years, Margaret Roberts (wife) present at death.
1881 census says he was born Stockport and aged 38years. He is living in Bollington
1891 census says born Stockport age 48years. He is still living in Bollington.
I wish I could find him pre-marriage.
The mind boggles!

Thanks for the quick replies.
My James is very elusive. You see he states on the 1881 and 1891 census that he was born in Stockport. Depending on which census or which certificate you believe (I have his marriage and death certificate), he was born anywhere between 1843 and 1847. I was hoping to find him living at home on the 1861 census with his father, John (named on the marriage cert. but deceased at the time of James marriage). The James Roberts in Oldham on the 1871 census has been found on the 1881 census as a different James Roberts to mine - Boo Hoo!.
Strange too - I have trawled through all the James Roberts births on the 1837online site for the years 1843-1847 and can't find one born in Stockport!
James Roberts was my Great Grandad and I would love to find out more about him.
Thanks for your help,
Norfolkgal.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / 1861 census for Stockport
« on: Tuesday 07 December 04 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Can anyone find my elusive James Roberts on the 1861 census for Stockport. He would be aged 14 to 18 years . If his father is still alive, his name was John. I have only ever found James on census after he was married in 1881 and 1891 when he was living in Bollington but states he was born in Stockport. He married in Stockport (Edgeley) in 1876. Thanks
