Thanks everyone for your input.  Jim I googled Edwardian hats and I now know there are far worse creations than my ancestor's hat - Mind-boggling!

Thanks Di and Carol

I have to admit I don't think I have ever seen a hat more hideous than the one she is wearing.

Hi,
The attached photo is of my GGrandmother who was born in the George area of South africa in 1844 and died there in 1924.  Her father was Scottish who came out to South Africa and married a local girl and settled in the area.  I would love to know the date of this photo together with any information about the clothing style and whether it would be what the local woman would be wearing in South Africa at that time or whether this would have come from the UK.  Based on her death date I imagine this was taken in the early 20th century.

Thanks
Jenny

Hi,
I know the date of this death from SP but as a matter of interest could someone please tell me the ACTUAL word which means seventeen hundred as for the life of me I cannot understand how Scotlands People knew this is what it meant.

Thanks

Hi Neil,
Thanks for your prompt replies.

According to the Family Tree record he was born in 1794.

My record from Scotlands People was a christening dated Dec 1793 in Ewes, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, thus making him  90 at time of death if the Family Tree record is correct. I am trying to establish whether they are one and the same person as in all my searches (and there have been many) I have only ever found one marriage between a James Scott and Jane Ogilvie in this time period
My main endevour is trying to link the Australian family to mine in South Africa as my Robert spoke of a brother who went to Australia whereas he ended up here in South Africa.

I am trying to find any information on James Scott who died at Norlup in 1883.  His wife was Annie Allen and he had a son William Scott who married Mary Keane. Norlup I believe is now an historic building and there is mention of the family when I google Norlup but not much detail iro their Scottish roots.

I originally found this information on the Family Tree website but unfortunately they don't give out contact addresses.

I live in South Africa and my ancestor Robert Ogilvie Scott had the same parents as James Scott, namely James Scott and Jane Ogilvie.  According to our family history Robert had a brother(s) who went to Australia from Scotland, whereas Robert came to South Africa. I am trying to establish whether James is this brother he spoke of.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry I said "completed" BEFORE I received VV's reply - if Jaj represents a thousand, what would the total figure read as?

Thanks
