Hi Edgar,

Amazing - I rarely log on here these days, and yet its only a few days since you posted !!

Yes, there is something somewhere about a Hindley / Carman connection, but its so long since I looked at the file I can't remember  ::) !

I am sending you a pm with my email address - if you email me give it a subject "For Chrissie Hope re family history" or it may get 'spammed' by mistake ! In the meantime I will try & find the relevant info (if any !)

Cheers,
Chris

London and Middlesex / Smith and Hope (and a Woodward) families - photos
« on: Friday 29 January 10 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am in the process of scanning in some old photos found in my late sister in law's belongings. They contain some old photos of what I believe are members of the Smith & Hope families from the Harrow area and previously St Pancras / Marylebone. Two people I have identified are Alice Kathleen Smith who married Sydney George Hope and their children, her sister Daisy Gertrude Smith, as well as Alice Mary Woodward (mother of Alice Kathleen & Daisy Gertrude). There are also others who I have no idea as to who they are !

If anyone is interested in copies of these photos, please get in touch

Cheers,
Chris

I am in the process of scanning in some old photos found in my late sister in law's belongings. They contain some old photos of what I believe are members of the Fitch & Hume families from the Rochford area of Essex. Two people I have identified are Elizabeth Hume who married George Arthur Fitch, a sister of Elizabeth (not yet identified), and some of their children including Errol Arthur Fitch.

If anyone is interested in copies of these photos, please get in touch

Is there an online index that anyone knows of ? I have a London newspaper proprietor in my files, but have no idea which paper he owned / ran !

I have tried googling his name, but to no avail, and have been going round in circles ever since  ::)

Lancashire / Re: Holland family became Gifford (Phillipson from Wigan)

Hi Dotty,

Don't have a date for the death of Henry senior, but it would be between 1871 & 1881
Census:
RG10 766
19 Thurston Rd Lewisham
Henry Gifford Head 50 Clerk Sussex Ninfield
Alice Gifford Wife 61 Lancashire Wigan
Alice A?H? Gifford Daur 21 Unm no occ Sussex Herstmonceux
Sarah Gifford Daur 18 Unm Teacher b ditto
Annie Gifford Daur 16 Unm ditto b ditto
Mary Latchford? Lodger 14 ditto Surrey Brixton

I believe daughter Alice's middle name was Landsell or similar.
The son, Henry Henderson Holland/Gifford, was at Eastbourne College age 13

Since the original post I have found reference in the London Gazette to the bankruptcy proceedings against Henry Holland from Hastings in Sussex, but I haven't gone further yet to check it out ! This would certainly explain the change of name & location !!

Hope this helps
Cheers,
Chris

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Suffragettes

Following your good suggestion I have just been trawling thro various online archives - unfortunately the free ones have given no result, and tho some of the pay ones appear to have something, I'm not convinced they're necessarily relevant.

After the fiasco that was scoop database, I'm not forking out at least £5 per time to find out, just on the offchance !
