RULE is a very common Cornish name so it will be interesting to see how far back the Scottish connection goes.

Yes, I'm surprised the AWM doesn't accept copies particularly if they're trying to get photos of all servicemen & women (nurses) from WW1. The chances of originals being available 100 years after hostilities commenced would be decreasing by the year.

Armed Forces / Australian War Memorial - original photos not digital copies
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 09:03 BST (UK)  »
I just received a reply from the Australian War Memorial saying thank you, but no thank you, they couldn't accept digital copies of photos for consideration. Unfortunately I'm not the holder of the original photos in my family otherwise I would have happily donated them so now I'll have to tactfully suggest to the owner they consider donating them.
Rumour has it that this relative may have 'disposed' of the originals and only kept digital copies! Some people have no sense of history :(

So a warning - if family members are going to have a 'cleanout' (and you have forewarning) but they're not prepared to give the photos to anyone else, suggest they make a donation to an appropriate institution or museum. EB

Australia Lookups completed / Re: South Aus/Renmark/Tanner,Churton

According to the current 'Riverland' phonebook (Renmark is one of the larger towns in this region) there are two Tanner families still living in the region. I won't post details as that would contravene Roots Chat rules.

My final word... On closer inspection I also agree with Majm, the first building looks more like a public or civic building.
Good luck! EB

Yep, Cando, you're right, fences, paths etc. suggest they're located in a town or city.

Clearly the owners were wealthy judging from the size of the homes. Pastoralists?
Looks like they has a large staff of gardeners, cooks, cleaners etc. Note the buildings are made out of stone and not timber. Would that give you some indication of the location? Where would the stone have been quarried from?

Sorry, I keep posing more questions than answers :)

I'd be tempted to add the photos to a few well known Australian gardening websites. Are there any references to John Spence in gardening books? Early
