Essex / Greenwood Cottages - Walton-on-the-Naze
« on: Friday 17 May 19 10:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Would anyone know if Greenwood Cottages that were on Hall Lane, Walton-on-the-Naze in the 1920's were alms houses or anything to do with Miss Lucy Greenwood, quaker and philanthropist who founded the Halstead Industrial School for Girls?

Many thanks for any help with this.

olleym - Just looked at the child's birth cert and she was born in Judd Street, St Pancras - less than a mile away from Clerkenwell!

Many thanks for that olleym - interested that there were connections with London (where the child was born) and Clacton-on-Sea.  The Isolation Hospital where she died was in Rush Green - I don't know how that fits with the orphanages mentioned.

Thanks for your reply.  The death was at the beginning of April but an interesting thought that she may have been on holiday.

Essex / Isolation Hospital - Clacton-on-Sea
« on: Monday 06 May 19 11:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello - I wonder if anyone can throw any ideas on this:

My great-grandmother, who was living in Oswestry, Shropshire in 1901 gave birth to an illegitimate child in the same year in Judd Street, St Pancras.  The baby later died aged 18 months at the Isolation Hospital in Clacton-on-Sea (which had only newly opened in 1901).  The baby died from diphtheria and it was noted on her death cert that the mother (my GGM) was living in Birmingham supposedly as a ladies' companion.

Surely there would have been isolation hospitals closer to Birmingham?  Do you think this could have been a case of baby farming practice?

My GGM, although never marrying, went on to have 5 other children but managed to keep them all with her.

The Isolation hospital doesn't seem to exist anymore but would anyone know if it is part of a larger hospital now and would there be any records available after all this time?  A big ask I know!!

Thanks for your time.

Cheshire / Re: Hoylake Burial

Thank you all that have taken the time to look into this for me.

Andy - I do actually have the newspaper article you mentioned regarding John Maule Sutton which makes interesting reading.  Although the address is in Manchester it would appear he went to live in Hoylake a couple of years prior to this, so may have had two houses.  This information was obtained from a bio on him given by the President of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London a few weeks after his death. In it is made mention of the cause of his death - heart disease with dropsy.

I have the probate record for JMS's wife, Maria Frances, and the address given is 4 Chester Buildings, Hoylake (which is Market Street) and as she died the year after JMS I can only presume that was where he died too - alas no probate record for him.

I will look into Flaybrick Hill Cemetery and fhsc as suggested.

Thanks again
Lyn

Daughter of above Charlotte Ada Maria Maule Knapp (nee Sutton) buried Hoose 22 Apr 1886 (age 30)
Son of CAMM Knapp - John Maule Sutton Knapp buried Hoose 1 Oct 1886 (age 1)

She actually died at Warneford Asylum, Headington, Oxfordshire but, after checking, her burial has not been located in the local graveyards.  However she had a sister that lived at Highworth, hence the hope she may be buried nearby.

Best wishes
