Renfrewshire / Re: McKechnie - Death 1853 - may interest some one
« on: Thursday 13 August 15 10:20 BST (UK)  »
Thank you Allan, Ev and Annie.  That does look like the right family in Kiln Lane 1851.  I seemed to have completely missed this family in the 1851 census and will explore further as 'Malcome' the father is a good age match for my gggrandmother's brother Malcolm born Middle Parish Paisley 12 January 1815.  I have found nothing more for him and thought he might have died young.

I had concluded (maybe prematurely) there was no connection with my McKechnies when I found this family tree, suggesting it was a different family on the 'Annie Jane'
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dalmanic&id=I106424
which appears to be this family at 8 Espedair Street in 1851:
William McKechnie 35
Jane                     33
James         "         10
Margaret     "          8
Janet          "          6
William       "          4
Andrew       "          2

Also William 20, Jean 20 and James 1 in Stock Street 1841 (and no known connection with my family).

However these are different children from those found by Allan.  Hmmm

The Kiln Lane family has to be the more credible given the children's names an exact match with the newspaper article.  Can you give me a link to that please Allan, or send me a copy?

Anyway great work all.  I will look closer at this family.

Thanks again.

Regards
Bob

If your relative died 14 July 1916 it was likely during the disastrous raid on the German lines by Otago Regiment on the night of the 13th described here.

The raid appears to have been in the L'Epinette sector just east of Armintieres.

I'm wondering if anyone has a lead on who this family might be?  My interest is a possible connection with my own McKechnie ancestors who had relatives in New Sneddon Street, Paisley around the time of this tragedy.

I have not found a passenger list for the 'Annie Jane', only a list of survivors from The Times Digital Archive.

I also cannot see a likely family in Seddon Street in the 1851 Census (not helped by FindMyPast putting most of Paisley in Greenock).  However there is this family in New Sneddon Street in the 1841 census:

McKechnie, Daniel      age 50  b Scotland
     "          Isobella          35          "
     "          William           15     Renfrewshire
     "          Daniel              6           "
     "          Isobella          10           "
     "          Alexander       10 mths   "

I cannot find this family in later census.  Nor can I find a record of Daniel & Isobella's marriage or children's births, which might help identify them.

The reason that I am wondering about a possible connection with my McKechnie family is that in 1841 the above family are living next door to my 3xgt grandfather's brother and sister, Daniel and Mary Mckechnie.  This Daniel and Mary both recorded age 50 but from other records they were in their 60's.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who might be able to shed light on either the family lost on the 'Annie Jane' (wrecked on Barra Head 29 September 1853 with loss of 348 souls) or the family living in New Sneddon street in the 1841 census.

My McKechnies were originally from Islay.

Thanks for the reply.
I have only one photo of my Gt Uncle which is a portrait of four brothers and father taken I think 1911, which is a good few years before he went overseas.
I will get it photoshopped so it is just him and send that in, in case you don't receive anything else.  He didn't return and has no descendants so possibly this is the only photo.

Do the photos need to be in uniform, or will civies be OK?

Argyllshire / Re: Kilmichael or Middleton?
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 12:18 BST (UK)  »
I have found a possible answer, and both names may be correct.

Keith Dash on his excellent Tiree genealogy site records eight alternative names for Middleton, all variations of the gaelic Am Baile Meadhanach meaning the middle farm or township.

One variation is Ballymeanoch, which happens to be the name of a place close to Kilmichael Glassary, about where Middle Shirvan was previously located (one of the deserted settlements mentioned in Allan Begg's book 'Deserted Settlements of Glassary Parish' referenced at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,257588.10.html)

There was a Mary born at Mid. Shirvane to parents Duncan MacKay and Mary MacTavish on 21 Dec 1800, which is within the range of likely birth dates for my Mary McKay.

Whilst not conclusive, it is quite possible that this Mary could have given her birthplace as Middleton (or a variation of it) in 1851 and Kilmichael in 1861.

Thanks to Martin Briscoe for passing on the info on Middle Shirvan.

Inverness / Re: Fort George Births

I am about to start reviewing Ardersier film 0990663 for Fort George births if anyone needs a look up.

Details of entries on this film here:
https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Ardersier,_Inverness,_Scotland

My interest is in the period 1776-1801 when my ancestor is known to have been based at Fort George and at least one child born there, but I am happy to search wider if helpful to others.

Argyllshire / Kilmichael or Middleton?
« on: Saturday 23 February 13 04:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor Mary McKay born Argyllshire around 1798 who married Robert Pollock in Shotts, Lanarkshire 12 Oct 1823.  The only clues to her birthplace are two Census entries:

1851 born Argyllshire, Middleton

1861 born Argyllshire, Kilmichael

The only Middleton I can find is on the Isle of Tiree, whereas Kilmichael is on the Kintyre Peninsula near Campbeltown, or alternatively there is Kilmichael Glassary above Lochgilphead.

Both Kilmichaels are a long way from the Isle of Tiree.

Can anyone think of a possible connection between Middleton and Kilmichael that might clarify where Mary came from?

I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks Ken.  I'm learning a lot about early military history with this man.  In my 70's and "worn out", I would have stayed at home!
