Ancestry have a family tree on Francis Newbery - his father also Francis Newbery was an artist - painter.

Sandra
Thanks Sandra, unfortunately I don't have an Ancestry membership so can't see their trees (even public ones).

Hi, I'm trying to find dates for 'F. Newbery, Bensham' (Gateshead?). I'm not finding anything in google searches or my (limited!) lists of Victorian photographers. Can anyone help please?

Yes, mid-late 1880s, but before 1889 when the style of shoulder changed significantly. If the lady is up to date, anyway....and a lady would make every attempt to be as fashionable as possible for a photo because it was very much an Occasion as well as a social statement :)

In other words, the clothing style, yes :)

Cheers,
China
Thank you China - this is so helpful.

It is earlier than 1896.
mid-late 1880's.

Thanks for this Jim. Is this based on the style of clothes? (I'm trying to learn what to look out for!). Thanks again for your help.

I think I read online that the company become the Queens photographers around 1886 and that they moved to the Stockton address around 1896...

So as a guess I would say 1896 or a few years after but not much later than 1903.... Of course knowing me I will be completely wrong ;D

Experts should be here soon to put me in my place hahaha :P

Many thanks for these thoughts Griffl - I hope it will turn out to be a bit earlier than 1896 to fit my likely candidates!! ;)

Some info about photographer on this link  :)
Thank you for this - narrows it down to 1886 - 1911 - getting there!  :)

Hi, Can anyone please suggest a likely date for this photograph so that I can narrow down the potential matches from my tree. Many thanks for any thoughts.

Hi Latina, if you blow the photo up you will see there des appear to be some sort of insignia on the front of the cap. I don't know if it's a badge or merely some decoration, but it's there.
You're absolutely right - there is something there. Such a shame it's not clearer. Thanks again, Seoras.
