Hi Cando, I'm looking to confirm his place of birth in Kilkenny Ireland as per poor relief records and scottish census records.  Cannot find a birth or emigration records....Ta x

Hi Cando, I think I followed the Portsmouth lead up and it led to a deadend but will check agian.  I think he may have been a sailor at some point so Portsmouth may be significant

Wow!!!! Many thanks for this.  I'm always blown away by how people are so generous with their time.  This is plenty.  The only thing that throws me is his place of birth as England, sources led me to believe he was born in Ireland..More digging I think,

I've sent off a few emails to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and hopefully will get some more information regarding Samuel's fate.  Will update the thread.  Thanks for everyone's input, it's been really helpful.
